Long-term immunity against yellow fever in children vaccinated during infancy: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A single dose of vaccine against yellow fever is routinely administered to infants aged 9-12 months under the Expanded Programme on Immunization, but the long-term outcome of vaccination in this age group is unknown. We aimed to evaluate the long-term persistence of neutralising antibodies to yellow fever virus following routine vaccination in infancy. METHODS: We did a longitudinal cohort study, using a microneutralisation assay to measure protective antibodies against yellow fever in Malian and Ghanaian children vaccinated around age 9 months and followed up for 4·5 years (Mali)…

Genetic differentiation between the BAMAKO and SAVANNA chromosomal forms of Anopheles gambiae as indicated by amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis.

The main vector of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, Anopheles gambiae, is subdivided into five chromosomal forms. Three of them (i.e., BAMAKO, SAVANNA, and MOPTI) are found in sympatry in Mali, where MOPTI can be distinguished from the other two forms based on differences in the ribosomal DNA locus. However, no molecular markers are available to distinguish BAMAKO from SAVANNA. We examined the banding patterns of 139 amplified fragment length polymorphism primer combinations in an attempt to identify diagnostic differences between SAVANNA and BAMAKO. Despite screening > 10,000 bands, no diagnost…

Studies on the biology of schistosomiasis with emphasis on the Senegal river basin.

The construction of the Diama dam on the Senegal river, the Manantali dam on the Bafing river, Mali and the ensuing ecological changes have led to a massive outbreak of Schistosoma mansoni in Northern Senegal, associated with high intensity of infections, due to intense transmission, and the creation of new foci of S. haematobium. Data on the vectorial capacity of Biomphalaria pfeifferi from Ndombo, near Richard Toll, Senegal are presented with sympatric and allopatric (Cameroon) S. mansoni. Comparisons are made on infectivity, cercarial production, chronobiology of cercarial emergence and lon…

Dracunculiasis eradication. Certification of absence of transmission.

Dracunculiasis transmission is now confined to the African continent. Eradication efforts must be intensified in the countries that are still endemic: Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Côte c'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Togo and Uganda. In these countries provision of safe drinking-water, containment of cases and health education for the exposed populations remain key measures for the interruption of transmission++ and for success. The Commission felt that particular attention should be given to Ghana, Nigeria and Sudan where eradication activ…

Comparison of a digestion-sedimentation technique with the Kato-Katz technique in the detection and quantification of S. mansoni eggs in light to moderate infections.

A comparison between a digestion-sedimentation technique (DST) and the Kato-Katz thick smear technique (KKT) in the detection and quantification of Schistosoma eggs in stool was carried out in 551 subjects. Specimen were collected one or two years after treatment with praziquantel from subjects living in a schistosomiasis endemic area of Mali. One hundred infections missed by the KKT were detected by the DST. Conversely, 35 infections missed by the DST were detected by the KKT (88% were light infections). More subjects were classified as lightly infected by the DST (p < 10(-3)) and more subjec…
