This study evaluated the bite force, electromyographic activity, and mandibular mobility in patients undergoing surgery for facial fracture treatment that required a coronal approach. Ten men were divided into two groups: group I, coronal approach with pre-auricular extension (n=4, average age 34.5 years); group II, coronal approach (n=6, average age 24.8 years). The maximum bite force was measured using a dynamometer and mandibular mobility using a calliper. The electromyographic activity of the right masseter (RM), left masseter (LM), right temporal (RT), and left temporal (LT) muscles was e

The mandibular ramus is considered an appropriate choice for reconstruction of maxillofacial defects because of sufficient amounts of material and fewer donor site complications. Although bone harvesting from the mandibular ramus has many advantages, in rare cases it can result in pathologic fracture of the mandible. Here, we present a case of 59-year-old man who suffered a pathologic mandible fracture related to biting hard foods, such as crab shells, after a sinus bone lifting with ramal bone graft procedure performed 2 weeks prior. He underwent closed reduction by intermaxillary fixation wi

PURPOSE: To analyze the biomechanical healing process on rigid fixation of sagittal fracture of the mandibular condyle (SFMC), and to provide guidelines for surgical treatment.
METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element model (3D-FEAM) of mandible and condyle was established. The right condyle was simulated as SFMC with 0.1 mm space across the condyle length ways. The 3D-FEAM of rigid fixation was established. The biomechanical factors such as stress distribution of condylar surface, displacement around fracture, stress on the plate and stress shielding were calculated during 0, 4, 8 and 12-we

BACKGROUND: Methotrexate (MTX) is an anti-metabolite used in rheumatology and oncology. High doses are indicated for oncological treatment, whereas low doses are indicated for chronic inflammatory diseases. This study evaluated the effect of two MTX treatment schedules on the bone healing of the temporomandibular joint fracture in rats.
METHODS: Seventy-five adult male Wistar rats were used to generate an experimental unilateral medially rotated condylar fracture model that allows an evaluation of bone healing and the articular structures. The animals were subdivided into three groups that ea

Several studies have published measurements of the height of the ramus on orthopantomographic (OPT) images of patients with unilateral fractures of the mandibular condyle as a possible quantitative measure for making decisions about treatment. However, we know of no studies that have described the accuracy and validity of such measurements. The aim of the present study was to assess the shortening of the ramus in patients with such fractures, and compare them with differences found in a control group. Seventy-four patients and 74 controls were studied. The height of the ramus on the fractured

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate mandibular ramus growth after different treatment methods for intracapsular condylar fracture (ICF) of growing goats.
METHOD: Twelve 6-month-old goats were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 4). The right ICF was created and respectively treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and closed treatment. No operation was taken in the control group. The maximum mouth opening and height of mandibular ramus were measured immediately and 3 months after operation by 3-dimensional computed tomographic analysis. Results of the 3 groups w

A rare case of superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm secondary to mandibular condylar fracture is presented. A 21-year-old man referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with limited mouth opening and left preauricular swelling for more than 40 days after a traffic accident injury. He had received mandibulomaxillary fixation in the emergency department. Computed tomography showed left mandibular condylar fracture, and digital subtraction angiography confirmed left superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm. Endovascular embolization of the left external carotid artery wa

The aim of this study was to examine the role of the lateral peterygoid muscle in the reconstruction of the shape of the condyle during healing of a sagittal fracture of the mandibular condyle. Twenty adult sheep were divided into 2 groups: all had a unilateral operation on the right side when the anterior and posterior attachments of the discs were cut, and an oblique vertical osteotomy was made from the lateral pole of the condyle to the medial side of the condylar neck. Ten sheep had the lateral pterygoid muscle cut, and the other 10 sheep did not. Sheep were killed at 4 weeks (n=2 from eac

Prosthodontic rehabilitation of a patient with an atrophic edentulous mandible presents a significant challenge in restoring esthetics and function. The purpose of this clinical report is to describe fracture of an atrophic edentulous mandible opposing maxillary natural dentition in association with endosseous dental implants. The patient received two wide-diameter implants in the anterior mandible for an implant-assisted mandibular overdenture, in which the implants penetrated the inferior border of the mandible for bicortical stabilization. Three months following implant placement surgery, t

Bony injuries caused by starter's pistols were repeatedly observed in the form of fractures of the temporal squama and other thin osseous lamellae; in experiments rib fractures could also be produced. In the presented case a contact shot from a blank cartridge pistol caused a fracture of the lower jaw (transverse fracture with a bone fragment split off in reg. 46). The friend of the 17-year-old victim had fired a shot to the right mandibular region during an argument. In the depth of the gunshot entrance wound, which communicated with the oral cavity, intense soot deposits were found as signs

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of mandibular fractures commonly involves the use of arch bars in temporary maxillo-mandibular fixation (also called intermaxillary fixation) to aid bone plating, for the postoperative application of light elastic traction to correct minor occlusal discrepancies and intermaxillary fixation for post reduction immobilisation. The purpose of this paper is to describe a quick and simple alternative for intermaxillary fixation.
CLINICAL PICTURE: Three cases of mandibular fractures are presented to demonstrate the use of intermaxillary screws instead of conventional arch-bar…

The object of the study was to present our experience of the treatment of bilateral condylar fractures between 1979 and 1995 and give the long-term outcome. The subjects were 61 patients, of whom 33 attended for review. There were 41 men and 20 women, age range 12-80 years (although nearly all the patients were between 17 and 32 years old). Thirty-one patients (51%) had bilateral fractures of the mandibular condyles alone, the remainder also having another mandibular fracture, usually at the parasymphysis. Over half the patients had been injured in falls. Only 8/122 fractures (7%) were intraca

Mandibular fractures in children present the surgeon with a unique set of considerations. Tooth buds within the body and ramus of the mandible restrict the type of surgical intervention that may be used. In addition, the fate of nonerupted dentition in the direct line of the fracture remains unclear. Between July 1985 and June 1990, 30 patients in deciduous or mixed dentition presented with a total of 45 mandibular fractures. Of these 45 fractures, 33% (n = 15) involved 16 nonerupted teeth. Age at the time of fracture was 6.0 +/- 2.3 years (mean +/- SD). Thirty-three percent of patients were t…

Under acute conditions, maxillofacial injuries may be treated without the opportunity for an assessment of occlusal irregularities, even when there are mandibular fractures, because life-threatening injuries have priority over occlusion. Consequently, mandibular fractures may result in post-trauma malocclusion and facial deformity. The case history reported is of a male patient who had been involved in a traffic accident in childhood and suffered mandibular fractures. The initial incomplete management resulted in persistent deformation of the mandible, disturbance of dental occlusion and diffi…

Soluble and total protein content and cathepsin D activity were measured in rat mandibular bone tissue during healing of a fracture treated with proteolytic enzymes (andecalin) or protease inhibitors (contrykal) electrophoresis. Contrykal essentially elevated collagen content in mandibular bone tissue and reduced lysosomal enzymes activity. Andecalin had no noticeable effect on the levels of total protein and collagen, but it significantly increased the activity of cathepsin D. The findings evidence that local contrykal electrophoresis in the focus of injury creates an effective concentration
