The vast majority of periocular squamous cell carcinoma spreads intraorbitally along the supraorbital and infraorbital nerves into the cavernous sinus. A patient presented with a history of resected squamous cell carcinoma and pain in the zygomatic distribution. She was found to have temporalis involvement of the malignancy and invasion of the zygomaticotemporal nerve by histopathology. She underwent aggressive resection and adjuvant treatment with no evidence of recurrence at 8-month follow up. This case illustrates an uncommon route of squamous cell carcinoma spread through the zygomaticotem

BACKGROUND: Convergent data showed that neuropathic pain has specific characteristics at cephalic versus extra-cephalic level, where single-targeted drugs differentially alleviate pain. Because the novel analgesic drug, tapentadol, is acting at two targets, μ-opioid receptors (as agonist) and noradrenaline reuptake (as inhibitor), we tested its effects on neuropathic pain at both cephalic and extra-cephalic levels.
METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats underwent unilateral constriction injury (CCI) to the infraorbital nerve (ION; cephalic territory) or the sciatic nerve (SN; extra-cephalic territory),

Trigeminal neuralgia is a debilitating neuropathic pain disorder characterized by facial hypersensitivity, yet its underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Using a mouse model of partial infraorbital nerve transection (pT-ION), we investigated transcriptomic alterations in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) to identify molecular contributors to orofacial pain. Microarray analysis identified 200 differentially expressed genes, with functional enrichment highlighting immune-related processes, calcium signaling, and lysosomal pathways. Among these, Calb2 (calretinin) emerged as a

A 32-year old man with Sturge-Weber syndrome, a rare congenital disease of multiple angiomatous lesions including cervical cortex, face, oral soft tissues, larynx and trachea, underwent the excision of a back lipoma. His hemangioma which extended into the region of the right ophthalmic nerve and superior maxillary nerve is extremely large. He also had mental retardation and epilepsy. No apparent hemangioma was found in his oral cavity, pharynxes, larynx and trachea by preoperative exam. His hemangioma made it difficult to cover his mouth and nose by usual face mask. Though we first considered …

PURPOSE: A successful inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia necessitates knowledge of the exact location of the mandibular foramen. The aim of this study was to determine whether the location of the mandibular foramen is related to the age or the vertical facial morphology of the patient.
METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs from 145 patients (average age 10.4 years; range 6.3 to 14.6 years) were collected. The position of the mandibular foramen was investigated both antero-posteriorely and vertically in relation to the occlusal plane. Pearson's correlation and multiple regression an

The trigeminal nerve is the largest cranial nerve with both a sensory and motor function. MRI is an excellent technique to evaluate the trigeminal nerve. We report the MRI findings and illustrate the normal and diseased trigeminal nerve at Meckel's cave, the cavernous sinus, the skull base foramina, the pterygopalatine fossa and the peripheral branches.

The objective of this study was to assess implant therapy after a staged guided bone regeneration procedure in the anterior maxilla by lateralization of the nasopalatine nerve and vessel bundle. Neurosensory function following augmentative procedures and implant placement, assessed using a standardized questionnaire and clinical examination, were the primary outcome variables measured. This retrospective study included patients with a bone defect in the anterior maxilla in need of horizontal and/or vertical ridge augmentation prior to dental implant placement. The surgical sites were allowed t

Background Le Fort I osteotomy and sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) are the most commonly performed procedures for correcting skeletal jaw deformities. Despite improved safety, neurosensory disturbances remain a significant postoperative complication. Comprehensive quantitative assessment of sensory recovery and identification of risk factors are essential for optimizing patient counseling and surgical planning. Methods A total of 579 cases with a complete six-month follow-up were analyzed from 642 consecutive orthognathic surgeries performed between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2025 at the

Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is a severe fungal infection caused by opportunistic fungi of the order Mucorales, most commonly Rhizopus oryzae. It typically occurs in patients with diabetes mellitus or those who are immunocompromised. The diagnosis is based on histopathological, microbiological, clinical, and radiological findings. Early diagnosis is crucial, and management includes antifungal therapy and surgical debridement. In this case report, we report a 64-year-old diabetic female patient who presented with rhino-orbital mucormycosis. The patient had central retinal artery o

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) usually affects the maxillary and mandibular branches of the fifth cranial nerve. Although the condition is primarily unilateral, few cases of bilateral manifestation have been reported. TN is uncommon; however, it significantly affects patients' quality of life because the neuropathic pain worsens over time. Paroxysmal pain is triggered by mechanical stimuli or environmental factors. Diagnosis is usually based on clinical findings, including pain triggered by palpation of distinct areas; nevertheless, imaging studies, such as magnetic resonance imaging, are always us

Parotid gland hemangiomas represent <0.6% of the total tumors of the gland and there are <50 tumors reported during adult age, so there is no standard treatment. A 18-year-old female presents with a mass in the right parotid gland of 18 months of a slow progressive asymptomatic growth; on physical examination, only the mass was detected. An angiography was performed, and it reported a possible hemangioma that depends on the right internal maxillary artery and right facial artery and was not suitable for embolization. Total parotidectomy was performed with prior ligation of the right external c

The piezosurgery has been used with increasing frequency and applicability by health professionals, especially those who deal with dental implants. The concept of piezoelectricity has emerged in the nineteenth century, but it was applied in oral surgery from 1988 by Tomaso Vercellotti. It consists of an ultrasonic device able to cut mineralized bone tissue, without injuring the adjacent soft tissue. It also has several advantages when compared to conventional techniques with drills and saws, such as the production of a precise, clean and low bleed bone cut that shows positive biological result

We describe a case of mucosal malignant melanoma in the sinonasal area of a 65-year-old woman. She presented with a history of nasal obstruction and epistaxis with subsequent tenderness, facial anesthesia involving cranial nerve V2, red eye, proptosis, diplopia, and conjunctival chemosis. Computed tomography detected a nonspecific solid mass that had involved the left maxillary sinus and surrounding tissues, with extension into the nasal cavity and invasion of the orbital floor and eye muscles. Histopathologic examination of the neoplasm revealed that it was a malignant melanoma. We performed
