Cadaveric comparison of canine fossa vs transnasal maxillary sinus access.

OBJECTIVE: Anatomic limitations complicate complete eradication of debris from the maxillary sinus using an exclusively transnasal (TN) endoscopic technique. Creation of a canine fossa trephination (CFT) permits a more direct approach than removal via the maxillary ostium. METHODS: Microdebrider eradication of debris completely filling the maxillary sinus was performed on 5 thawed fresh-frozen cadaver heads (10 sides) using a TN or CFT approach. Postdebridement computed tomography (CT) scanning assessed remaining debris. Additional outcome measures included time of debris removal, number of d…

A case of massive maxillary sinus bleeding after dental implant.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of dental implants, and many complications may arise during implantation. In cases where an artificial tooth is implanted in the maxilla, complications such as acute maxillary sinusitis, oroantral fistula, and displacement of the dental implant to the maxillary sinus may occur due to the anatomical characteristics of the maxilla and the inexperience of providers. The authors report a case of massive maxillary sinus bleeding during dental implant that was controlled successfully by emergency surgery.

Implant migration into maxillary sinus: description of two asymptomatic cases.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation of edentulous jaws with dental implants has become a usual practice around the world. A very low incidence of complications is associated with this therapy. One of them is migration of dental implants into maxillary sinus. Foreign bodies inside maxillary sinus should be removed because they can cause sinusitis, but if any symptoms are present, preservation alone can be indicated. Implant removal and bone reconstruction on the same procedure reduce treatment time and allow rehabilitation with implant-supported prosthesis. METHODS: In the present study, we report two …

Maxillary sinus lift performed using ultrasound. Evaluation of 21 patients.

The patient was a 64-year-old woman who reported a sudden onset of neck pain and headaches following a fall 2.5 months prior to her initial physical therapy visit. Cervical spine radiographs, which were ordered by the referring physician, revealed extensive degenerative disc disease of the lower cervical spine. At her initial physical therapy evaluation, cervical spine range of motion was within functional limits except for bilateral rotation, which was limited to 45 degrees due to pain and stiffness. The patient's headache symptoms were abolished with the Sharp-Purser test. Although assessmen

The maxillary sinus after total laryngectomy: an electron microscopic study.

Nasal breathing is completely ceased after total laryngectomy. This results in some structural changes in the nasal mucosa, which has been described in numerous studies. This study investigates the changes that appear in the paranasal sinus mucosa. Eight patients who had undergone total laryngectomy at least 1-year ago were enrolled. Under general anesthesia, maxillary sinuses were examined with an endoscope inserted through canine fossa. 1-2 mm mucosal tissues for biopsy were taken from posterior wall of the maxillary sinus. Specimens were evaluated under an electron microscope. Control tissu…

New bone formation in the maxillary sinus without bone grafts.

PURPOSE: Various sinus augmentation procedures, using bone substitutes, have been used to place dental implants in the atrophic posterior maxilla. The aim of this article is to evaluate the possibility of new bone formation in the maxillary sinus without a bone graft. MATERIALS: Ten patients without significant sinus pathosis were selected for this study. The bony window was prepared in the lateral wall using the ultrasonic piezoelectric bone surgery device (Surgybone, Silfradent srl, Sofia, Italy). The sinus membrane was elevated superiorly and implants were placed simultaneously to maintain…

Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumour occurring in the maxillary sinus.

A 12-year-old boy complained of swelling of the left cheek. Fiberscopic examination revealed the presence of a soft reddish mass in the middle meatus of the left nostril. CT scan showed a large mass completely filling the left maxillary sinus. The lesion originated from the maxillary sinus and extended to the middle nasal meatus; bone destruction and invasion of the subcutaneous tissue of the cheek were noted. T2-weighted MRI images revealed a heterogeneous signal in the left maxillary sinus. Under general anaesthesia, biopsies were obtained through an intraoral incision. On pathology, atypica…

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the maxillary sinus: case report.

The case is described of a male patient with respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the left maxillary sinus that initially presented as a chronic sinus inflammation. This benign lesion is characterized by glandular proliferation originating from the surface of the respiratory epithelium. Maxillary sinus localisation is very rare but is very important to be able to distinguish hamartomas from schneiderian papillomas of the inverted type and adenocarcinomas, potentially requiring aggressive surgical treatment. Moreover, misinterpretation of the respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamart…

Histological and clinical outcomes of lateral sinus floor elevation with simultaneous removal of a maxillary sinus pseudocyst.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus pathologies are a potential risk for failure of implant and bone augmentation. Management of lateral sinus floor elevation in the presence of a pseudocyst remains controversial, and reports on histological outcomes of endo-sinus bone augmentation with maxillary cysts are scarce. PURPOSE: To present a modified surgical technique for removal of maxillary pseudocyst with simultaneous sinus floor elevation, and to evaluate clinical and histological outcomes of the bone grafting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with a radiographic dome-shaped opacity in the posterior m…

Evaluation of clinical outcomes of implants placed into the maxillary sinus with a perforated sinus membrane: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep services are assigned a non-essential status during COVID-19. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine strongly urges sleep clinicians to continue postponing non-urgent care until a later date, if such a recommendation is made by state officials due to local conditions. At the same time, one cannot ignore the fact that sleep is important for people's health and wellbeing. Therefore, to protect the health of the population, it is essential to find ways and means to continue the practice of sleep medicine even during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: Social environment and work eth
