Aetiology and incidence of facial fractures sustained during sports: a prospective study of 140 patients.

A prospective study was carried out involving patients presenting with facial fractures sustained during sports. One hundred and forty patients were admitted to the Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital of Paris between March 1998 and March 2000, accounting for 13.3% of all patients with facial bone fractures. The ratio of males to females was 7.2:1 and the mean age was 28.5 years. The majority of accidents occurred during soccer (25.0%), followed by rugby (15.0%), and as a consequence of collisions between players (50.7%). The majority of the injuries involved the mandible (34.4%), the zygoma

Rare Mandibular Ramus Fracture.

Mandibular fractures represent approximately two-thirds of all maxillofacial fractures (nearly 70%), out of which fractures of mandibular ramus represent 3.09% which is considered to be a rare fracture site. They occur alone or in combination with other facial bone fractures resulting in loss of function and disfigurement. The pattern of mandibular fractures varies with geographic location, physical activity, social, cultural, and environmental factors. The main causes of mandibular fracture are road traffic accidents, interpersonal violence, falls, sports injuries, industrial trauma, and path

Parotid salivary fistula secondary to external pin fixation: case report.

Although the use of rigid fixation techniques has become widespread for the treatment of mandible fractures, indications still remain for the utilization of biphasic external pin fixation in patients who suffer cranio-maxillofacial trauma. The treatment of continuity defects of the mandible secondary to avulsive injuries or ablative surgery is a primary indication for the utilization of biphasic external pin fixation. The placement of biphasic external pins requires an understanding of the surgical anatomy surrounding the mandible. In this article, the authors discuss the indications for, cont

Anesthetic Management of Jael Syndrome With Impacted Blade in Close Proximity to the Internal Carotid Artery: A Case Report.

A patient presented with a stab injury caused by a knife penetrating the orbital floor and maxillary sinus along the skull base with the tip situated adjacent to the left internal carotid artery. A flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope loaded with an endotracheal tube was initially positioned superior to the vocal cords and advanced into the trachea immediately following induction. The blade was removed after occluding endovascular balloons were positioned distal and proximal to the potential internal carotid artery injury site. Therefore, contralateral nasal fiberoptic intubation might be safely p

Oral electrical burns in children-a model of multidisciplinary care.

Electrical burns of the mouth are the most common electrical injury in children and can have serious, long-term functional and aesthetic consequences. Presented is a review of the pathogenesis of the associated injury and sequelae, as well as a case report. In the presented case, a multidisciplinary approach was used with input from pediatric dentistry, plastic/burn surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. This collaborative effort and a novel microstomia prevention device produced a superior functional and aesthetic result. Without the aid of a microstomia device, the resultant contractur

Facial Fractures and Their Relation to Head and Cervical Spine Injuries in Hospitalized Bicyclists.

Bicyclists are vulnerable road users. The authors aimed to characterise facial fractures and their association with head and neck injuries in bicyclists admitted to a Scandinavian Level 1 trauma center with a catchment area of ~3 million inhabitants. Data from bicycle-related injuries in the period 2005 to 2016 were extracted from the Oslo University Hospital trauma registry. Variables included were age; sex; date of injury; abbreviated injury scale (AIS) codes for facial skeletal, head and neck injuries; and surgical procedure codes for treatment of facial fractures. Anatomical injury was cla

Management of Gunshot Injuries of Mandible with Open Reduction and Internal Fixation versus Closed Reduction and Maxillo-mandibular Fixation.

Background/objectives Gunshot injuries are known to cause severe morbidity and mortality when facial regions are involved. Management of the gunshot wounds of the face comprises of securing an airway, controlling hemorrhage, identifying other injuries and definite repair of the traumatic facial deformities. The objective of the present study was to compare the clinical outcome (infection and nonunion) of open reduction and internal fixation versus closed reduction and maxillo-mandibular fixation (CR-MMF) in the treatment of gunshot injuries of the mandible. Materials & methods This study was c

The role of computerised tomography in predicting visual outcome in ocular trauma patients.

PURPOSE: Ocular blast injuries in the military setting are particularly associated with significant maxillofacial trauma and/or brain injury. The opportunity to perform a comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation is frequently limited in the acute multiple trauma scenario. We aim to describe the relationship between the clinical effects of acute ocular and orbital blast trauma with the findings on computerised tomography (CT). METHODS: This was a retrospective consecutive case series of all soldiers with facial and/or suspected ocular injuries. A total of 80 eyes that had suffered blast injuries of

The head, neck, and systemic manifestations of levamisole-adulterated cocaine use.

Systemic complications of levamisole-adulterated cocaine (LAC) use have recently been described. The objective of this review is to increase awareness of these manifestations among oral and maxillofacial surgeons. LAC exposure through inhalation, nasal insufflation, or injection can induce cutaneous vasculopathy and hematologic abnormalities such as neutropenia or agranulocytosis. Unlike other vasculopathies involving the skin, LAC-induced vascular injury frequently manifests with purpuric and necrotic lesions that involve the face and ears. Oral manifestations have also been reported but are

Outpatient management of facial fractures in France: Current state.

Maxillofacial trauma is still very common in France with possible involvement of all face bones. Outpatient surgery is an axis strongly put forward by the public authorities. The aim of this study is to establish a current state in the outpatient management of facial fractures in France in 2019 before COVID infection. A closed and semi-open-ended questionnaire was sent to French hospitals treating facial fractures in order to evaluate current and possible future practices in terms of outpatient and perioperative management. Data extracted from the Program for giving Medical significance to Inf

Arthrographic imaging of post-traumatic temporomandibular joint disorders.

Clinical, arthrographic and surgical findings in 20 patients who showed persisting TMJ-pain or dysfunction after an acute traumatic event were reviewed and compared to findings in a control group of 65 patients who did not remember an acute post-traumatic onset of symptoms. Anterior disk displacement (82%), disk perforation (65%) and rotational anteromedial disk displacement (34%) were the most common abnormalities encountered. Other important abnormalities were joint adhesions and capsule perforation. When compared with the control group, all these abnormalities occurred more often in traumat

Facial injuries in automobile crashes.

In automobile accidents, the facial area is the most frequently injured body region in passenger car occupants. Laboratory studies have indicated that the tolerance of facial bones to impact is relatively low. Most of these facial injuries are rated as minor. The windshield, steering wheel, and instrument panel are the major points of contact. Restraints, lap belts, and lap-shoulder belts reduce the frequency of facial injuries at all levels of severity and also reduce the more severe and serious injuries to other body regions.
