Capillaria ova were no longer detected following the third day of medication. At the second month follow-up, her body weight returned to her pre-morbid state and all laboratory findings returned to normal with the exception …

An AxiDraw robotic arm with a smartphone was used to scan 96 well microplates and store photographs. Images of L1 were manually annotated, and augmented based on exposure, bounding, blur, noise, and mosaicism.
RESULTS: A total of 1309 pho …

Levamisole (LEV) and ivermectin (IVM) efficiently killed A. galli. However, albendazole (ABZ), mebendazole (MBZ), and piperazine (PPZ) did not kill the worms even at 120 μg/mL and 1mg/mL concentrations, respectively. Taken together, our results suggest that A. galli is highly prevalent in semiscavenging chickens in Bangladesh. Ascaridia galli can be easi …

PURPOSE: Cysticercosis is the presence of Taenia solium larvae in humans or swines tissues. It is a public health problem related to bad hygienic habits and consumption of infected pork. T. crassiceps is a widely used cysticercosis experimental model. The combination of two effective drugs such as nitazoxanide (NTZ) and flubendazole (FBZ) may potentialize their effect. The aim of this study was to use biochemical analysis to determine the metabolic impact of the combination of NTZ and FBZ on cysticerci inoculated intraperitoneally in mice.
METHODS: Balb/c mice intraperitoneally infected with

Toxocariasis, a disease caused by infection with larvae of Toxocara canis, T. cati and/or congeners, represents clinical syndromes in humans … depending on symptoms and location of larvae, and may include the administration of albendazole or mebendazole, together with anti-inflammatory corticosteroids. Some recent studies indicate that toxocariasis is having an increased, adverse impact on human health in some, particularly underprivileged, tropical and subtropical communities around the world. Cyst echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of the Echinococcus granulosus helminth parasite. The work reported here aimed to compare the efficacy of albendazole (ABZ) and flubendazole (FLBZ) against CE in naturally infected sheep. Additionally, their comparative pharmacokinetic behaviour and the assessment of serum liver enzymes activities were studied. Twelve (12) naturally infected sheep were allocated to the following experimental groups: unmedicated control group, FLBZ-treated and ABZ-treated. Treatments were orally performed every 48 h, over 55 days at dose

Hydatid disease of bone is rare. It remains asymptomatic over a long period. It is usually detected after a pathological fracture or secondary infection or following the onset of compressive myelopathy in cases of vertebral lesions. Secondary infection of hydatid disease of bone could be difficult to treat. The authors present a case of chronic osteomyelitis of the proximal aspect of the left femur in a 37-year-old male patient secondary to hydatid disease of bone. It was treated by aggressive debridement, gentamycin beads, and bone graft to fill the defect. No recurrence of the hydatid lesion

Acute appendicitis is the most common acute surgical condition in children. Parasitic infestations are ubiquitous on a worldwide basis and are seen in the United States because of increasing international travel and emigration from developing countries. These infestations may produce symptoms of acute appendicitis, although the role of parasitic infestation in relation to appendicitis is controversial. Intestinal parasites may cause significant morbidity and mortality. We report a patient with symptoms of acute appendicitis in whom intramural parasites were found during laparoscopic surgery. H

A 33-year-old Dutch woman developed itchy skin lesions during a beach holiday in Thailand. She was treated for various diagnoses, without success. Finally she was successfully treated for a clinically suspected hookwormrelated folliculitis. A brief overview of hookworm-related folliculitis is given.

Ascaris Lumbricoides Infestation (ALI) is one of the most common helmintic disease of the gastrointestinal tract, and may cause severe surgical complications, especially in children. ALI is frequent in tropical and subtropical countries. We present our experience with a case of a 5-years old pakistan girl treated in Italy for acute abdomen in which ALI was detected during surgical exploration.

The authors present a young male patient with two intracranial lesions, one in the left occipital lobe, the other in the left temporal lobe. These masses were totally removed and both proved to be alveolar hydatid cysts. Surgery for a large hepatic mass, diagnosed after the first craniotomy, was refused by the patient.

An attempt was made to identify the human hookworm involved in failed-treatment cases using abnormal hosts and scanning electron microscopy. Thirty-seven, 2 to 6 month old Chinese hamsters (Cricetulus griseus) from a closed, outbred, conventional colony, were each given between 20 and 120 filariform larvae per os. The larvae were cultured from faeces from mebendazole (Vermox) 500 mg single-dose, failed-treatment cases living in the lowveld farming area of the Transvaal Province, South Africa. About 60 to 78 days after inoculation, the animals were killed and adult worms were removed from their…

Capillaria philippinensis eggs, larvae, and adults were identified in the stool of a 41-year-old female physician from Cairo, Egypt, who had never traveled abroad. She had eaten local and imported fish. She suffered from borborygmi, abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of weight for greater than 3 months. Treatment with Flubendazole (R17889-Janssen) 200 mg twice daily for 30 days resulted in clinical and parasitological cure.

Chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infections can produce intermittent urticarial skin eruptions and gastrointestinal discomfort for years. Three cases of symptomatic infection acquired by United States military personnel in Vietnam are presented as examples of chronic parasitic disease unrecognized by physicians despite clear histories of geographic exposure, classic creeping skin eruptions, and eosinophilia. More attention needs to be paid to the possible long-term sequela from military service in tropical climates by both military and civilian physicians.
