Prospective memory in adults with down syndrome.

Prospective memory (PM) refers to the ability to remember one's intentions (what I must do), at the appropriate time, in the future (when I must do it). The objective of this work is to study the performance of people with Down syndrome (DS) compared to two control groups, matched by mental age and chronological age. For this purpose, an adapted version of the virtual week, which is an ecological test to simulate the functioning of PM in everyday life, was used. The results suggest that people with DS have difficulties in PM that mainly concern the binding (association) between prospective (wh

Multimodal Integration and Vividness in the Angular Gyrus During Episodic Encoding and Retrieval.

Much evidence suggests that the angular gyrus (AnG) is involved in episodic memory, but its precise role has yet to be determined. We examined two possible accounts within the same experimental paradigm: the "cortical binding of relational activity" (CoBRA) account (Shimamura, 2011), which suggests that the AnG acts as a convergence zone that binds multimodal episodic features, and the subjectivity account (Yazar et al., 2012), which implicates AnG involvement in subjective mnemonic experience (such as vividness or confidence). fMRI was used during both encoding and retrieval of paired associa

Rethinking the Role of the Angular Gyrus in Remembering the Past and Imagining the Future: The Contextual Integration Model.

Despite consistent activation on tasks of episodic memory, the precise contribution of the left angular gyrus (AG) to mnemonic functions remains vigorously debated. Mounting evidence suggests that AG activity scales with subjective ratings of vividness and confidence in recollection, with further evidence pointing to its involvement during construction of detailed and coherent future simulations. Lesion studies, however, indicate that damage to the AG does not render patients amnesic on standard source and associative memory paradigms. To reconcile these findings, we present the Contextual Int

Positive autobiographical memory deficits in youth with depression histories and their never-depressed siblings.

OBJECTIVES: Impaired positive autobiographical memory (AM) is closely linked to emotional disorders. AM impairments are often found in depressed adults and may be related to the difficulties such persons have in regulating their dysphoric mood. By contrast, less is known about AM disturbances among adolescents, or about the functional relationship of AM disturbances to early-onset depression. DESIGN: A high-risk family design served to compare four groups of youth who differed in depression histories and familial depression risk. METHODS: Thirty-one currently depressed probands, 185 remitted

Rumination is associated with the phenomenal characteristics of autobiographical memories and future scenarios.

In the present studies it was investigated whether rumination was associated with the phenomenal characteristics of autobiographical memories and future scenarios. In three studies student participants completed questionnaires on rumination and recalled and rated a positive and a negative memory. In Studies 2 and 3 participants also generated and rated a positive and a negative future scenario. Memories were rated on reliving and emotional valence; future scenarios were rated on reliving, emotional valence, and how probable the scenario was. Generally, the results showed that a higher degree o

Positive effects of subclinical depression in prospective memory and ongoing tasks in young and old adults.

Results reported in the literature show that depression can have either negative or neutral effects on prospective memory (PM). The goal of the present study was to broaden the analysis of depression-related effects on PM, with regard to the possibility that subclinical depression may have positive influence on PM. A total of 120 participants from four groups (young/old, subclinically depressed/non-depressed) completed event- and time-based PM tasks embedded in the linear orders task or stories task, respectively. In the event-based PM task no effects of depression were found, whereas depresse

Microstructural Brain Reserve Moderates the Associations Between 24-h Movement Behaviors and Cognition in Older Adults: Cross-Sectional Findings From the AGUEDA Trial.

This study examined the associations between 24-h movement behaviors and cognitive function in cognitively unimpaired older adults, and whether Alzheimer's disease brain signatures, including gray matter mean diffusivity (GMMD) and thickness/volume signatures, moderated these associations. A total of 91 participants were enrolled in the AGUEDA trial (NCT05186090), with 89 included in this cross-sectional analysis (mean age = 71.61 ± 3.85 years; 56.2% females). Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light physical activity (LPA), sedentary behavior (SB), and sleep were objectively asses

Does theta synchronicity of sensory information enhance associative memory? Replicating the theta-induced memory effect.

The binding of information from different sensory or neural sources is critical for associative memory. Previous research in animals suggested that the timing of theta oscillations in the hippocampus is critical for long-term potentiation, which underlies associative and episodic memory. Studies with human participants showed correlations between theta oscillations in medial temporal lobe and episodic memory. Clouter et al. directly investigated this link by modulating the intensity of the luminance and the sound of the video clips so that they 'flickered' at certain frequencies and with varyi

The effects of acute cannabidiol on cerebral blood flow and its relationship to memory: An arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Cannabidiol (CBD) is being investigated as a potential treatment for several medical indications, many of which are characterised by altered memory processing. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are unclear. AIMS: Our primary aim was to investigate how CBD influences cerebral blood flow (CBF) in regions involved in memory processing. Our secondary aim was to determine if the effects of CBD on CBF were associated with differences in working and episodic memory task performance. METHODS: We used a randomised, crossover, double-blind design in which 15 healthy particip

Portraying the unique contribution of the default mode network to internally driven mnemonic processes.

Numerous neuroimaging studies have implicated default mode network (DMN) involvement in both internally driven processes and memory. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether memory operations reflect a particular case of internally driven processing or alternatively involve the DMN in a distinct manner, possibly depending on memory type. This question is critical for refining neurocognitive memory theorem in the context of other endogenic processes and elucidating the functional significance of this key network. We used functional MRI to examine DMN activity and connectivity patterns while particip

Acute effects of the ampakine farampator on memory and information processing in healthy elderly volunteers.

Ampakines act as positive allosteric modulators of AMPA-type glutamate receptors and facilitate hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP), a mechanism associated with memory storage and consolidation. The present study investigated the acute effects of farampator, 1-(benzofurazan-5-ylcarbonyl) piperidine, on memory and information processes in healthy elderly volunteers. A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, cross-over study was performed in 16 healthy, elderly volunteers (eight male, eight female; mean age 66.1, SD 4.5 years). All subjects received farampator (500 mg) and placebo. Te

Prospective memory impairment in long-term opiate users.

RATIONALE: Opiate use is associated with a range of neurological and cognitive deficits. However, to date, no studies have assessed whether these cognitive deficits extend to the ability to perform intended actions in the future (i.e. prospective memory). Reduced ability in this area might be anticipated due to impaired executive functions and episodic memory associated with long-term opiate use. OBJECTIVES: The main objectives of this study are to assess the performance of long-term opiate users on a laboratory measure of prospective memory which closely simulates the types of prospective me

Brain correlates of sadness in music: An exploratory ALE meta-analysis.

The neural systems supporting music-induced sadness remain incompletely understood, particularly regarding how affective processing interacts with memory. In this exploratory study, activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis examined convergent neural responses to music-induced sadness across nine functional neuroimaging studies (155 participants, 25 activation foci). Coordinates reported in Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) space were analyzed using GingerALE (version 3.0.2) under a random-effects model with cluster-level family-wise error (FWE) correction (p < 0.01) and voxel-l

Social memory deficits and their neural correlates in multiple sclerosis.

While the impact of multiple sclerosis (MS) on various cognitive functions has been well documented, social memory - memory of other individuals - remains unexplored. In this study, 26 MS patients and 23 healthy controls underwent task-based fMRI during a social navigation paradigm simulating interpersonal interactions, followed by an episodic social memory recall questionnaire. T1-weighted, T2-FLAIR and diffusion tensor imaging were also acquired. As social navigation metrics have been associated with activity in the precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex (PPCC), we examined this region's funct

Hippocampal neurons encode different episodes in an overlapping sequence of odors task.

Recent theoretical models of hippocampal function suggest that the hippocampus plays a critical role in the memory for the overlapping sequences of events that comprise episodic memory. Consistent with this idea, the firing of hippocampal "place cells" have been shown to represent not only location, but also the context or episode in which the location occurs. Thus, hippocampal neurons fire differently in the same location depending on the particular journey or sequence of places in which the subject is traveling. Further, recent work in rats has shown that hippocampal lesions impair memory fo

Insidious cognitive decline in CADASIL.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral autosomal-dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) causes repeated ischemic attacks leading to subcortical vascular dementia. The aim of this study was to characterize cognitive function in subjects with a C475T (R133C) mutation in the Notch3 gene, leading to CADASIL. METHODS: Prestroke (n=13) and poststroke (n=13) mutation carriers and mutation carriers with dementia (n=8) were compared with healthy noncarriers from the same families using a comprehensive set of neuropsychological tests. RESULTS: Changes in working me

Long-lasting memory abnormalities following exposure to the mouse defense test battery: An animal model of PTSD.

Memory dysfunctions are thought to play a crucial role both in the development and the maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Patients suffering from this condition persistently re-experience the traumatic event particularly when exposed to trauma-related cues and they display memory alterations. The objective of the present study was to investigate the long-term effects of a traumatic stress exposure on defensive behaviors and memory performance in mice confronted with a natural threat (i.e. a rat) in the defense test battery (MDTB), a procedure developed by the Blanchard group

Permanent global amnesia: case report.

PURPOSE: To present a case of permanent global amnesia related to hippocampal damage. Permanent global amnesia is a very rare condition of unknown etiology; lesions restricted to the hippocampus are uncommon, which hinders investigations of this pattern of memory loss. This case is unusually well documented, as the patient underwent extensive neuropsychological evaluations. CLINICAL FEATURES: A cheerful right-handed, 83-year-old retired electrician was first evaluated in 1990 for progressive difficulty in learning new information and in recalling events over the preceding 3-4 years. Tests ove

Electrocorticography reveals the temporal dynamics of posterior parietal cortical activity during recognition memory decisions.

Theories of the neurobiology of episodic memory predominantly focus on the contributions of medial temporal lobe structures, based on extensive lesion, electrophysiological, and imaging evidence. Against this backdrop, functional neuroimaging data have unexpectedly implicated left posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in episodic retrieval, revealing distinct activation patterns in PPC subregions as humans make memory-related decisions. To date, theorizing about the functional contributions of PPC has been hampered by the absence of information about the temporal dynamics of PPC activity as retrieva

The left posterior angular gyrus is engaged by autobiographical recall not object-semantics, or event-semantics: Evidence from contrastive propositional speech production.

The angular gyrus (AG) has been implicated in a myriad of cognitive functions. Using the previously under-studied naturalistic task of propositional speech production, we investigated the engagement of the left posterior AG (pAG) by three forms of memory: 1) episodic/autobiographical memory, 2) object semantic-memory, and 3) event-semantic knowledge. We conducted an ALE meta-analysis, followed by an functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. The meta-analysis showed that pAG is only engaged as part of the propositional speech network when the task carries an autobiographical component
