The pharmacokinetics of recombinant FXIII (catridecacog) from the MENTORTM2 trial to a real-world study: a head-to-head comparison.

BACKGROUND: FXIII deficiency is a very rare coagulation disorder that can affect equally males and females with an estimated incidence of 1 in 2 million persons worldwide. Due to this rarity, there are only few clinical and pharmacokinetic (PK) data deriving from the real-world. AIM: The aim of this report is to compare head-to-head the pharmacokinetic data of catridecacog derived from the MENTORTM2 trial with our real-world (RW) study. METHODS: The PK-profiles of all patients with FXIII deficiency treated with catridecacog at eleven Italian Hemophilia Centers were compared with PK data obta

Reducing Opioid Mortality in Illinois (ROMI): A case management/peer recovery coaching critical time intervention clinical trial protocol.

Individuals with a history of opioid use are disproportionately represented in Illinois jails and prisons and face high risks of overdose and relapse at community reentry. Case management and peer recovery coaching are established interventions that may be leveraged to improve linkage to substance use treatment and supportive services during these critical periods of transition. We present the protocol for the Reducing Opioid Mortality in Illinois (ROMI), a type I hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized trial of a case management, peer recovery coaching and overdose education and naloxo

Occupational stress facing nurse academics-A mixed-methods systematic review.

AIM: To better understand occupational stress faced by nurse academics. METHODS: A mixed-methods systematic review, following the Joanna Briggs Institute [JBI], (Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewers' Manual: 2014 edition, 2014) process. Studies were assessed for quality and risk of bias by using standardised critical appraisal instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute. In addition, processes and reporting were checked against the Equator guidelines. See Appendix S1. RESULTS: The review revealed that nursing academics do experience occupational stress, including burnout. Occupational stress f

Parents' Own Experience of Verbal Abuse Is Associated with their Acceptance of Abuse towards Children from Youth Sports Coaches.

Verbal or physical abuse from coaches has negative effects on young athletes, and the parents of athletes also have an influence on the sports environment. It is therefore important to understand parents' attitudes towards abuse against their children from the coaches. This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of parents who accept the infliction of verbal or physical abuse on their children from coaches of youth sports teams. A cross-sectional study using self-report questionnaires was conducted with parents of young athletes (n = 6,493). Multivariate logistic regression models were u

Comparison of In-Person and Online Motivational Interviewing-Based Health Coaching.

Health coaching is a common approach for promoting lifestyle changes, but little is known about the effectiveness of different delivery methods. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of in-person versus online health coaching when used as part of a facilitated behavior change program. To increase translatability, the study used a naturalistic design that enabled participants to self-select the coaching delivery method (Group) as well as the target behavior (diet, physical activity, or weight management). Regardless of group, participants were provided with a behavior-base

Clinical mentorship of nurse initiated antiretroviral therapy in Khayelitsha, South Africa: a quality of care assessment.

INTRODUCTION: To combat the AIDS epidemic and increase HIV treatment access, the South African government implemented a nurse-based, doctor-supported model of care that decentralizes administration of antiretroviral treatment (ART) for HIV positive patients through nurse initiated and managed ART. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) implemented a mentorship programme to ensure successful task-shifting, subsequently assessing the quality of clinical care provided by nurses. METHODS: A before-after cross-sectional study was conducted on nurses completing the mentorship programme in Khayelitsha, Sout

The impact of continuous quality improvement on coverage of antenatal HIV care tests in rural South Africa: Results of a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised controlled implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for the effectiveness of continuous quality improvement (CQI) in resource-poor settings is very limited. We aimed to establish the effects of CQI on quality of antenatal HIV care in primary care clinics in rural South Africa. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing CQI to usual standard of antenatal care (ANC) in 7 nurse-led, public-sector primary care clinics-combined into 6 clusters-over 8 steps and 19 months. Clusters randomly switched from comparator to intervention on pre-specified dates until all had rol

[One hundred and twenty years of intrathoracic surgery in the "Sauerbruch chamber" with reduced pressure].

The manuscript is devoted to Sauerbruch F. as a great innovative surgeon, scientist and one of the founders of thoracic surgery in the world. Little-known facts from his life and joint work with the mentor and "master" of German surgery (Mikulicz I.). The authors discuss the issues related to invention and presentation of the "Sauerbruch chamber" with reduced pressure for intrathoracic surgeries. A long-awaited article appeared under a modest but promising title in the sixth issue of this journal (January, 1904). It was supposed to make a revolution in intrathoracic surgery, put end to the dan

Exposing T Cell Secrets Inside and Outside the Thymus.

I've had serious misgivings about writing this article, because from living the experience day by day, it's hard to believe my accomplishments merit the attention. To skirt this roadblock, I forced myself to pretend I was in a conversation with my trainees, trying to distill the central driving forces of my career in science. The below chronicles my evolution from would-be astronaut/ballerina to budding developmental biologist to devoted T cell immunologist. It traces my work from a focus on intrathymic events that mold developing T cells into self-major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-restri

Sunao Tawara : further musings on his tribulations in providing the basis for the modern-day understanding of cardiac electrophysiology.

Sunao Tawara, who was born in 1873 and died in 1952, is considered the father of modern cardiac electrophysiology. He published his monumental monograph describing the atrioventricular conduction axis in 1906. He achieved this task in the face of multiple tribulations as a doctoral student working in a cultural environment that was not his own. Although his letters underscoring the publication of the monograph have been published, little emphasis has been placed on the potential problems he encountered in bringing his task to fruition. For example, it was not until the final 6 months of his st

Factors influencing glove use in student nurses.

BACKGROUND: Gloves can prevent infection but their use among student nurses is inconsistent. AIM: To explore pre-registration student nurses' views of non-sterile glove use in clinical practice. METHOD: An online survey was conducted and focus groups carried out among third-year student nurses. RESULTS: The online survey showed that gloves were often worn inappropriately, while the focus groups revealed students conformed to their mentors' use of gloves. DISCUSSION: Student nurses' decisions on wearing gloves seem to be based on the culture of the clinical care environment rather than trus

The prohormone theory and the proprotein convertases: it is all about serendipity.

When I became a physician and an endocrinologist in the early 1960s, peptide hormone sequencing was still in its infancy; it was also far removed from my immediate interests. Through chance encounters with prominent teachers and mentors, I later became increasingly convinced that elucidation of the primary sequence of peptide hormones is key to understanding their production as well as their functions in human health and disease. My interest for pituitary hormones led me to discover that the sequence of β-melanocyte-stimulating hormone was contained within that γ and β-lipotropins and could be

Great careers: Cornil, Bouchard, Bourneville and Proust.

Several French physicians of the 19th century are considered to be the pioneers of modern neurology, especially Jean-Martin Charcot. Later, the pupils of Charcot--interns at La Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, including Cornil, Bouchard and Bourneville--went on to make great contributions to the field of neurology with their own discoveries. Specifically, with their mentor, they made the following contributions: Bouchard is responsible for first-ever description of cerebral hemorrhage pathogenesis; Bourneville arranged for the publication of Charcot's works; Cornil demonstrated histological evid

Fostering Locally Led Palliative Care Innovation: A Qualitative Evaluation of the SPHERE-Stanford Collaborative Quality Improvement Program.

BACKGROUND: Australia is recognized internationally for high-quality palliative care, yet inequities in access, variable service models, and workforce pressures limit safe, effective, and person-centered care. Quality Improvement (QI) approaches offer a practical method for addressing these gaps. To build local QI capability, the Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise partnered with Stanford Medicine to implement an evidence-based QI program in seven Australian palliative care services. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinicians' experiences implementing QI projects through

A mixed-methods assessment of disclosure of HIV status among expert mothers living with HIV in rural Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Peer support provided by experienced and/or trained "expert" women living with HIV has been adopted by prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) programs across sub-Saharan Africa. While there is ample data on HIV status disclosure among non-expert women, there is little data on disclosure among such expert women, who support other women living with HIV. OBJECTIVE: This study compared HIV disclosure rates between expert and non-expert mothers living with HIV, and contextualized quantitative findings with qualitative data from expert women. METHODS: We compared sur

Correlates of facility delivery for rural HIV-positive pregnant women enrolled in the MoMent Nigeria prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Low rates of maternal healthcare service utilization, including facility delivery, may impede progress in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and in reducing maternal and infant mortality. The MoMent (Mother Mentor) study investigated the impact of structured peer support on early infant diagnosis presentation and postpartum maternal retention in PMTCT care in rural Nigeria. This paper describes baseline characteristics and correlates of facility delivery among MoMent study participants. METHODS: HIV-positive pregnant women were recruited at 20 rural Prim
