In the United Kingdom, about half the patients with Graves' disease who are given antithyroid drugs are still in remission one year after treatment is stopped. The most widely held view is that such remission rates are due only to the biochemical effects of the drugs, the disease either spontaneously remitting or abating when the immune system is no longer subject to the stimulatory effects of excessive thyroid hormone. BACKGROUND: Graves' is disease an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland caused by circulating anti-thyroid receptor antibodies (TRAb) in the serum. TRAb mimics the action of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and stimulates the thyroid hormone receptor (TSHR), which results in hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) and goiter. UNLABELLED: We describe two cases of increases in serum creatine kinase (CK) concentrations in children undergoing treatment of Graves' disease with antithyroid medications. Five patients with drug-induced agranulocytosis received 300 micrograms recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rh G-CSF) subcutaneously twice daily for 2-5 days. G-CSF therapy resulted in a steep increase of the neutrophil count, which was faster than that in patients with spontaneous recovery reported in the literature. In all four patients with infectious complications fever rapidly declined with the increase of granulocytes. G-CSF may be useful in the management of drug-induced agranulocytosis.

Pharmacokinetic parameters of thiamazole in hyperthyroid patients (40 subjects with Graves-Basedow disease--32 female and 8 male patients) and in healthy individuals (8 subjects--5 women and 3 men) were compared.
