Under examination there were 59 elderly and senile patients with acute cholecystitis subjected to emergency operations. It was found that among 3 kinds of initial narcosis smooth course was notable in the phentanyl-sombrevin initial narcosis. The administration of thalamonal-sombrevin initial narcosis results in a certain inhibition of blood circulation, and gives adequate anesthesia during endotracheal intubation. The initial sombrevin narcosis is followed by inhibition of blood circulation and fails to give sufficiently deep anesthesia during intubation of the trachea.

We describe the course of illness in two middle-aged diabetic men who died suddenly from primary lung abscesses. They were in apparent good health and presented with fever, cough and small lung abscess [less than 5 cm] on chest radiographs. While receiving standard antimicrobial therapy in hospital, they experienced sudden respiratory arrest from aspiration of purulent material presumably following the drainage of lung abscess contents. This is a very unusual complication and the similar clinical features between these two cases prompted this report.

The data on the treatment given to 312 cases of stomach cancer at city district hospitals in Leningrad were evaluated: 243 patients were more than 60 years old, concomittant pathology was apparent in 231 cases, 252 patients were hospitalized to avoid a fatal outcome and 161 patients were urgently operated on for such complications of stomach cancer as bleeding, perforation, peritonitis, and obstruction. BACKGROUND: Foehn winds, warm and dry downslope winds common in alpine regions, have long been suspected to affect human health, but objective evidence remains limited.
