The Ultrastructure of Chloroplasts in Mineral-deficient Maize Leaves.

The ultrastructure of mesophyll chloroplasts in full-nutrient and mineral-deficient maize (Zea mays) leaves was examined by electron microscopy after glutaraldehyde-osmium tetroxide fixation. Nitrogen, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur deficiencies were induced by growing the plants in nutrient culture. Distinctive chloroplast types were observed with each deficiency. Chloroplasts from nitrogen-deficient plants were reduced in size and had prominent osmiophilic globules and large grana stacks. Magnesium deficiency was characterized by the accumulation of osmiophilic globule

Vitamin D Activation and Mineral Ion Regulation.

Nutrients frequently act in coordination with the absorption and metabolism of one nutrient often interdependent on the presence of others. For example, magnesium is essential for the activation of vitamin D, which, in turn regulates calcium and phosphate homeostasis, both of which are critical for cellular and organ function. A comprehensive understanding of disorders arising from disruptions in vitamin D and mineral ion metabolism is essential for explaining the pathophysiological mechanisms associated with their imbalance. The chapters of this book are selected to provide in-depth insights

The Mechanism of Mineral Nucleation and Growth in a Mini-Ferritin.

Iron is an enigmatic element. While necessary for life, as Fe(II) it also catalyzes formation of reactive oxygen species. To mitigate this, cellular life has evolved the ferritin protein superfamily, which includes the 24 subunit ferritins and bacterioferritins, and 12 subunit mini-ferritins (DPS). Each catalyze the oxidation of Fe(II) to ferric oxyhydroxide, which is then sequestered within the hollow protein shell. While there is a wealth of structural information on unmineralized ferritins, high resolution information on iron loaded ferritins is lacking, and the mechanism of iron mineraliza

[Effects of microplastics exposure in development of mineralized tissues].

Microplastics are emerging pollutants of increasing concern, which can enter the human body through pathways such as diet, respiration and skin contact, inducing oxidative stress and inflammatory responses and posing a potential risk on the formation and development of mineralized tissues in the body. Early life is a critical period for the formation and development of mineralized tissues. Microplastics can pass though the placental barrier during early life to affect the fetus directly by accumulating in the bone marrow and interfering with the development of the growth plate, leading to abno

Dimensions of elongate mineral particles and cancer: A review.

CONTEXT: Based on a decade-long exploration, dimensions of elongate mineral particles are implicated as a pivotal component of their carcinogenic potency. This paper summarizes current understanding of the discovered relationships and their importance to the protection of public health. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the relationships between cancer risk and dimensions (length, width, and other derivative characteristics) of mineral fibers by comparing the results and conclusions of previously published studies with newly published information. METHODS: A database including 59 datasets comprisin

Determinants of Bone Mineral Density in Transgender Youth.

PURPOSE: We aimed to study determinants of bone health in transgender youth in anticipation of or shortly after initiating puberty suppression and/or gender-affirming hormone therapy. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of records of transgender adolescents in our institution between June 2014 and June 2019. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to assess bone mineral density (BMD). Baseline characteristics were collected and included in a multilinear regression model to assess determinants of lumbar spine (LS) BMD Z-scores adjusted for age and height and accounting for race. Welch's

The Impact of Mineral Supplementation on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrinopathy that is common among women of reproductive age. It is a heterogeneous disorder with an unknown etiology. Different strategies have been proposed for the treatment of PCOS. Recent studies recommend supplementation with specific minerals for treating various PCOS phenotypes. We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, and SCOPUS databases by using search terms combining PCOS with the supplementation of magnesium, zinc, selenium, or chromium. This review presents a narrative concerning the association between PCOS and magnesium, zinc, selenium, and ch…

Bone and Mineral Disease in Kidney Transplant Recipients.

After kidney transplantation, mineral and bone disorders are associated with higher risk of fractures and consequent morbidity and mortality. Disorders of calcium and phosphorus, vitamin D deficiency, and hyperparathyroidism are also common. The epidemiology of bone disease has evolved over the past several decades due to changes in immunosuppressive regimens, mainly glucocorticoid minimization or avoidance. The assessment of bone disease in kidney transplant recipients relies on risk factor recognition and bone mineral density assessment. Several drugs have been trialed for the treatment of p
