A brief period of aphasia is an extremely rare and likely underreported adverse effect of electroconvulsive therapy. Clinical studies that have described this phenomenon are scarce and its prevalence is unknown. We present a unique case of a 35-year old woman, who underwent an outpatient ECT session at our department, followed by a short span of aphasic symptoms, the extent of which were monitored clinically and via the czech version of the Minnesota aphasia screening test.

The medical care of the pediatric population is disproportionately affected compared to adult medical care during periods of social and political unrest. No-show and late cancellation rates (NSLCR) were collected across pediatric and adult dermatology clinics in Minneapolis, Minnesota during recent periods of social unrest and the year prior. Pediatric dermatologic appointments, specifically those in metropolitan areas, were found to have a statistically significant increase (p < 0.001) in NSLCR compared to adult dermatology clinics.

Embolization of the Amplatzer Septal Occluder (ASO) device (St. Jude Medical, Minnesota) after percutaneous closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) is a rare and potentially catastrophic complication. Percutaneous retrieval of the embolized device is gaining ground as an acceptable method, although these patients are usually subsequently referred for open surgical closure of the ASD. We present a unique case of percutaneous retrieval embolized ASO device and placement of newer larger ASO device in a single procedure.

The assumption that spasmodic torticollis represents a conversion reaction was examined by evaluating profiles of 61 patients on the hypochondriasis, depression, and hysteria scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Thirty-six per cent of the sample had normal profiles. A conversion "V" profile with scores above 70 was found in a minority (9%) of the patients. This study was designed to determine whether oestrogens in oral contraceptives and other drugs have a protective effect against development of rheumatoid arthritis. The medical records of 229 women with rheumatoid arthritis and 458 individually matched controls identified through the comprehensive records system for the population of Rochester, Minnesota, were examined for current and prior use of oestrogens. No association was found between rheumatoid arthritis and the use of oral contraceptives, or the use of oestrogens for menopause-related or postmenopausal symptoms.
