Community nurses' judgement for the management of venous leg ulceration: a judgement analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nurses caring for the large numbers of people with leg ulceration play a key role in promoting quality in health via their diagnostic and treatment clinical judgements. In the UK, audit evidence suggests that the quality of these judgements is often sub optimal. Misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment choices are likely to affect healing rates, patients' quality of life, patient safety and healthcare costs. OBJECTIVES: To explore the diagnostic judgements and treatment choices of UK community nurses managing venous leg ulceration. DESIGN: A judgement analysis based on Brunswik's psy

Using health psychology techniques to manage chronic physical symptoms.

Chest pain and palpitations, non-malignant pain, breathlessness and fatigue often endure despite the receipt of appropriate nursing and medical care. This is distressing for patients, impacts on their quality of life and ability to function and is associated with high healthcare usage and costs. The cognitive behavioural approach offers nurses a model to understand how people's perceptions and beliefs and their emotional, behavioural and physiological reactions are linked. Common 'thinking errors' which can exacerbate symptom severity and impact are highlighted. Understanding of this model may

[Nursing personnel attitudes prior to the introduction of informatic tools and contemporary vision of a hospital information system].

Computerization is no more improvised just like that and the management of computer plans is from now on a matter for methods and approaches which leave nothing to chance. The main purpose of the present work's empirical part is to a priori determine the attitude which will be the one of the nurses toward the implementation of computer aid in the care units that is expected on the short term. So we will have at our disposal pertinent information which will enable the concerned people to efficiently negotiate this change. For the realization of the present study, we built a LIKERT scale of atti

Changes in cognitive functioning and quality of life after relocation to a nursing home: a prospective longitudinal study of Swiss nursing home residents.

A relocation to a nursing home is a major life transition in older age, with potential impacts on cognitive functioning and quality of life. In line with psychosocial models of successful aging, we investigated how older adults adapted to this major life transition. Using data collected at nine nursing homes in Geneva, Switzerland, we studied changes in cognitive functioning (i.e., short-term, long-term, and working memory, verbal fluency, prospective memory, and inductive reasoning) and quality of life (i.e., emotional and social loneliness, depressive symptoms, and purpose in life) in cognit

Standard Precautions are for everyone: The role of HIV stigma and implications for nursing education in India.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Standard Precautions (SP) are infection control procedures universally applicable to every patient. Though SP reduces disease transmission, their implementation is dependent on the knowledge and skills of healthcare workers (HCWs). Poor knowledge regarding the appropriate use of SP can cause fear among HCWs, leading to stigma and discrimination while treating people living with HIV (PLWH). Stigma and discrimination are known barriers for PLWH to access HIV care services. The aim of the study was to assess nursing student knowledge of SP, SP self-efficacy and SP percei

Reflective narrative and dementia care.

This study was an enquiry into how clinical supervision could enable a team of six community psychiatric nurses to provide improved patient-centred care. It also examined how feelings of burn-out, stress and tedium when caring for people with dementia could be relieved. The methodology used in the study analysed the process, enabling the findings to be studied. This is new paradigm research, requiring the researcher and participants to be equal and active coenquirers into the process facilitating the enquiry. Six community psychiatric nurses allowed their period of supervision to be recorded o

Model for heart failure education.

Heart failure (HF) is the heart's inability to meet the body's need for blood and oxygen. According to the American Heart Association 2013 update, approximately 5.1 million people are diagnosed with HF in the United States in 2006. Heart failure is the most common diagnosis for hospitalization. In the United States, the HF direct and indirect costs are estimated to be US $39.2 billion in 2010. To address this issue, nursing educators designed innovative teaching frameworks on HF management both in academia and in clinical settings. The model was based on 2 resources: the American Association o

[Grievances in South African hospitals: from a nursing service management perspective].

The nursing service manager is accountable for adequate and efficient personnel management in the nursing service and the management of grievances is an important aspect of the personnel management function. The question arises, however, how and when grievances in nursing services arose and developed? The purpose of this article is to give a historical description of the development and management of grievances in nursing services for the time frame 1652-1990. An historical analysis was undertaken by means of news paper analysis, as well as other written resources. The results show that the de

"I have lost sexual interest …"-challenges of balancing personal and professional lives among nurses caring for people living with HIV and AIDS in Limpopo, South Africa.

As part of a capacity-building research project, this study examined the extent to which caring for people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) affects both professional and personal relationships of nurse caregivers. The data were collected using focus group interviews with 17 female nurses at two Limpopo hospitals. The PEN-3 cultural model was used as a theoretical framework for exploring how nurses balance job demands with family responsibilities. The results generated three themes: the multiple identities nurses experience within their family and professional lives; nurse attitudes related to

Reduction in Hospitals' Readmission Rates: Role of Hospital-Based Skilled Nursing Facilities.

Hospital readmission within 30 days of discharge is an important quality measure given that it represents a potentially preventable adverse outcome. Approximately, 20% of Medicare beneficiaries are readmitted within 30 days of discharge. Many strategies such as the hospital readmission reduction program have been proposed and implemented to reduce readmission rates. Prior research has shown that coordination of care could play a significant role in lowering readmissions. Although having a hospital-based skilled nursing facility (HBSNF) in a hospital could help in improving care for patients ne
