Negative symptoms of schizophrenia: clinical characteristics, pathophysiological substrates, experimental models and prospects for improved treatment.

Schizophrenia is a complex and multifactorial disorder generally diagnosed in young adults at the time of the first psychotic episode of delusions and hallucinations. These positive symptoms can be controlled in most patients by currently-available antipsychotics. Conversely, they are poorly effective against concomitant neurocognitive dysfunction, deficits in social cognition and negative symptoms (NS), which strongly contribute to poor functional outcome. The precise notion of NS has evolved over the past century, with recent studies - underpinned by novel rating methods - suggesting two maj

The cost of ongoing war: escalation of continuous traumatic stress response over time and later functional, adjustment, and affective difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Continuous Traumatic Stress Response (CTSR) refers to psychological, emotional, and behavioral reactions that emerge under conditions of ongoing, realistic, and future-oriented threat. Recently, CTSR received empirical attention in areas affected by political armed conflict; studies have been cross-sectional. Therefore, there is limited understanding of CTSR dynamics over time. METHODS: The current longitudinal study examined changes in CTSR during the Israel-Hamas war and its associations with functioning problems, maladjustment, and psychological burden (anxiety and depression).

Adverse and positive childhood experiences in relation to adolescent mental health: sequential indirect associations.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence has linked adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to adolescent mental health problems, whereas positive childhood experiences (PCEs) may serve a protective function. Guided by the stress-vulnerability model, this study examined the associations between ACEs and adolescent mental health, and further investigated the indirect pathways via rumination and psychological resilience, as well as the moderating role of PCEs. METHODS: A total of 700 adolescents were recruited and completed validated measures of ACEs, PCEs, rumination, psychological resilience, and menta

Does Reducing Alcohol Use Among People with HIV Alleviate Psychological Distress and Symptoms of Depression? A Randomized Controlled Trial in Tshwane, South Africa.

Although alcohol use is associated with depression, it is unclear if brief alcohol reduction interventions can ameliorate depression and psychological distress among people with HIV (PWH). We use data from a two-arm randomised controlled trial to examine this question. PWH on antiretroviral treatment (ART) were randomly assigned to receive a brief intervention or treatment as usual (n = 622). Screening was done with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), AUDIT-C, Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression inventory and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, at baseline and at

Psychological Distress Among Healthcare Professionals During the Early Stages of the COVID-19 Outbreak in Low Resource Settings: A Cross-Sectional Study in Bangladesh.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been very destructive to and compromised the functioning of all nations' public health systems. In the absence of a vaccine, healthcare workers have been employed to relentlessly fight against COVID-19. The psychological status of healthcare workers during the pandemic in countries with limited resources, notably Bangladesh, remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the psychological states of frontline and non-frontline Bangladeshi healthcare workers during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak. An online cross-sectional study was conducted from May

Multiple developmental pathways underlying conduct problems: A multitrajectory framework.

In the past decades, there has been an overemphasis of a descriptive/behavioral approach to study conduct disorder. In an equifinal perspective, we aimed to examine the developmental multitrajectory groups of psychological features (irritability, interpersonal callousness, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and depressive-anxiety symptoms) and their associations with conduct problems. In a population-based cohort (n = 1,309 participants followed from 5 months to 17 years old), latent-class growth analysis was performed for each psychological feature to identify a two-trajectory model (from ages 6 to 1

Psychological predictors of functional outcomes in service members with traumatic brain injury.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Research is increasingly demonstrating the significant impact that non-medical factors can have on outcomes of service members (SMs) with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Thus, the current study examined which demographic, TBI-related factors, and psychological variables are most predictive of functional outcomes. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective database analysis from medical chart review. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: One hundred forty-one patients who received rehabilitation services at an outpatient TBI military treatment facility between 2013 and 2018. Data collected inclu

Changes in the oral cavity might reflect psychological disorders in some patients.

AIM: The treatment of oral dysesthesias, such as burning mouth syndrome, can be challenging. Patient acceptance of the role of psychological etiological factors might be improved if there are clinical signs that patients could confirm themselves, which could be used as reinforcement of clinical discussions. Published associations between psychological disorder and various oral signs and symptoms are not suited to this purpose, as they are ambiguous in origin and implication. Others, used clinically in this situation, are not supported by published literature. Therefore, the purpose of this stu

Treatment decision difficulties and post-operative distress predict persistence of psychological morbidity in Chinese women following breast cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: The patterns and determinants of longer-term psychological morbidity in women following breast cancer surgery have not been described for Chinese populations. METHODS: Chinese women were assessed at 3-days, 4-months and 8-months following breast surgery, on treatment decision-making difficulty (TDMD), satisfaction with treatment outcome (E-OI), self efficacy (GSeS), optimism (C-LOT-R), consultation satisfaction (C-MISS-R), physical symptom distress (PSD) and psychological morbidity (CHQ-12) and compared using polynomial logistic models. Psychological and health problems in a geographically proximate population time-sampled continuously for three months after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist incidents.

This study assessed the mental and physical health status and psychological problems related to the September 11th terrorist incidents among a representative sample of adults living near New York City, using continuously time-sampled data collected throughout 2001. Prevalence estimates for poor mental or physical health after September 11th (October through December) were comparable to those for the entire year of 2001 (i.e. approximately 33%). Psychological problems related to the terrorist incidents were reported by more than half of the respondents, and appeared to peak in prevalence approx

The effect of childhood trauma on later psychological adjustment.

This study examined whether adult attachment and cognitive distortion mediate the relationship between childhood trauma and psychological adjustment. The participants were 219 students (40 men and 117 women) enrolled in a university degree. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, which assessed retrospective accounts of childhood trauma; the Relationships Scales Questionnaire, which measured two dimensions of adult attachment (model-of-self and model-of-other); the Cognitive Distortions Scale, which measured internal attributions and perceptions of controllability; and the T

Toward an integrated understanding of dyslexia: genetic, neurological, and cognitive mechanisms.

This paper reviews what is known about developmental dyslexia at three levels of analysis: cognitive, neurological, and genetic. It also considers the difficult problem of establishing causal links between these levels of analysis, and argues that solving the gene-behavior problem is paradoxically easier than solving the brain-behavior problem.

Psychological distress and Africentric coping strategies among nurses in Ghana: prevalence, correlates and predictors.

BACKGROUND: Nursing is intrinsically demanding, exposing practitioners to substantial workloads, emotional labour, and systemic healthcare challenges that contribute to significant psychological distress. In Ghana, the compounding effects of structural deficiencies within the healthcare system make nurses particularly vulnerable. However, research on culturally informed coping strategies within this population remains limited. This study examined the association between psychological distress and Africentric coping strategies among 248 nurses in public healthcare facilities in the Central and

Association between "Life's Critical 9" health score and the risk of inflammatory bowel disease: a prospective cohort study from the UK biobank.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract. The "Life's Critical 9" (LC9) health score, proposed by the American Heart Association (AHA), incorporates nine modifiable factors including psychological health. This study aims to evaluate the association between the LC9 score and the risk of IBD, particularly UC and CD. METHODS: This prospective cohort study utilized UK Biobank data from 370,645 participants. Cox proportional hazards models assessed associations between

Children's early signs and developmental trajectories of psychotic-like experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Children who experience persistent psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are at a higher risk of developing psychotic disorder later in life. The developmental trajectories of PLEs are influenced by various factors. Therefore, it is important to identify early characteristics that can distinguish and predict between different developmental trajectories of PLEs. METHODS: Using PLEs scores from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) data across three waves, we categorized participants into five distinct PLEs trajectories groups: persistent group (n = 47), remitting group (n

Negative automatic thoughts mediate the effects of emotion regulation on distress in women with breast and gynecological cancer.

Cancer's emotionally taxing nature offers a compelling real-world model for examining psychological distress. Despite its relevance, empirical research remains limited on the cognitive mechanisms, particularly self-referent negative automatic thoughts (NATs) and emotion regulation (ER), sustaining distress in chronic illness. In this cross-sectional study women (N = 230) diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer completed self-report measures of distress, depressive and anxiety symptoms, cognitive emotion regulation and negative automatic thoughts, along with sociodemographic and clinical

The mediating and moderating effects of resilience on the relationship between sleep quality and psychological distress in Chinese women with infertility.

BACKGROUND: Research has widely indicated that the psychological distress experienced by infertile patients during fertility treatments may have a negative effect on the results of assisted reproduction. Although numerous studies have shown that psychological resilience and sleep quality are important influencing factors for psychological distress, the mediating mechanisms of psychological resilience in the relationship between sleep quality and psychological distress for Chinese women in particular remain unclear. Therefore, the current study investigates the association between sleep quality

From "viewing" to "participation": a study on the mechanisms underlying consumption behavior among sports streaming audiences.

BACKGROUND: Driven by both the strategy to build a sports powerhouse and the development of digital technology, China's sports broadcasting market has shown rapid growth. However, academic research has yet to systematically explore the underlying psychological mechanisms associated with the transition from "viewing" behavior to "participatory" consumption. OBJECTIVE: Drawing on a management psychology perspective, this study aims to construct and test a sequential mediation model to examine the associations among Motivation for Watching Sports Events, emotional responses, psychological belong
