Oropouche virus infection in patients with acute febrile syndrome: Is a predictive model based solely on signs and symptoms useful?

BACKGROUND: Oropouche fever is an infectious disease caused by the Oropouche virus (OROV). The diagnosis and prediction of the clinical picture continue to be a great challenge for clinicians who manage patients with acute febrile syndrome. Several symptoms have been associated with OROV virus infection in patients with febrile syndrome; however, to date, there is no clinical prediction rule, which is a fundamental tool to help the approach of this infectious disease. OBJECTIVE: To assess the performance of a prediction model based solely on signs and symptoms to diagnose Oropouche virus infe

Realistic 3D infant head surfaces augmentation to improve AI-based diagnosis of cranial deformities.

Evaluation of the head shape of newborns is needed to detect cranial deformities, disturbances in head growth, and consequently, to predict short- and long-term neurodevelopment. Currently, there is a lack of automatic tools to provide a detailed evaluation of the head shape. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods, namely deep learning (DL), can be explored to develop fast and automatic approaches for shape evaluation. However, due to the clinical variability of patients' head anatomy, generalization of AI networks to the clinical needs is paramount and extremely challenging. In this work, a new

Determine neighboring region spatial effect on dengue cases using ensemble ARIMA models.

The state of Selangor, in Malaysia consist of urban and peri-urban centres with good transportation system, and suitable temperature levels with high precipitations and humidity which make the state ideal for high number of dengue cases, annually. This study investigates if districts within the Selangor state do influence each other in determining pattern of dengue cases. Study compares two different models; the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Ensemble ARIMA models, using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) measurement to gauge t

A joint model for multiple dynamic processes and clinical endpoints: Application to Alzheimer's disease.

As other neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's disease, the most frequent dementia in the elderly, is characterized by multiple progressive impairments in the brain structure and in clinical functions such as cognitive functioning and functional disability. Until recently, these components were mostly studied independently because no joint model for multivariate longitudinal data and time to event was available in the statistical community. Yet, these components are fundamentally interrelated in the degradation process toward dementia and should be analyzed together. We thus propose a joint

A Network Approach to Environmental Impact in Psychotic Disorder: Brief Theoretical Framework.

The spectrum of psychotic disorder represents a multifactorial and heterogeneous condition and is thought to result from a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. In the current paper, we analyze this interplay using network analysis, which has been recently proposed as a novel psychometric framework for the study of mental disorders. Using general population data, we construct network models for the relation between 3 environmental risk factors (cannabis use, developmental trauma, and urban environment), dimensional measures of psychopathology (anxiety, depression, interp

The Use of an Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Model for Prediction of the Incidence of Dysentery in Jiangsu, China.

The aim of this study is to forecast the incidence of bacillary dysentery with a prediction model. We collected the annual and monthly laboratory data of confirmed cases from January 2004 to December 2014. In this study, we applied an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to forecast bacillary dysentery incidence in Jiangsu, China. The ARIMA (1, 1, 1) × (1, 1, 2)12 model fitted exactly with the number of cases during January 2004 to December 2014. The fitted model was then used to predict bacillary dysentery incidence during the period January to August 2015, and the number of

Computerized Adaptive Diagnosis and Testing of Mental Health Disorders.

In this review we explore recent developments in computerized adaptive diagnostic screening and computerized adaptive testing for the presence and severity of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and mania. The statistical methodology is unique in that it is based on multidimensional item response theory (severity) and random forests (diagnosis) instead of traditional mental health measurement based on classical test theory (a simple total score) or unidimensional item response theory. We show that the information contained in large item banks consisting of hundreds of symptom

Fluorescence fingerprinting of bottled white wines can reveal memories related to sulfur dioxide treatments of the must.

For the first time, Excitation Emission Matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy was combined with parallel factor statistical analysis (PARAFAC) and applied to a set of 320 dry white wines of the Chardonnay grape variety. A four component PARAFAC model (C1, C2, C3 and C4) best explained the variability of fluorescence signatures of white wines. Subtle changes were observed in EEMs of white wines from two different vintages (2006 and 2007), where different concentrations of sulfur dioxide (0, 4, and 8 g·hL(-1)) were added to the grape must at pressing. PARAFAC results clearly indicated that sulf

Protective effect of bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccine in the prevention of leprosy: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although the role of bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccine in the prevention of leprosy was hypothesized as early as 1939, its level of protective effect remained controversial. AIM: As a meta-analysis systematically combines the results from different studies, we summarize the protective effect of BCG vaccine in prevention of leprosy using meta-analytic procedures. METHODS: Our search strategy included a computerized literature search, snowballing technique to identify potential studies, review of previously compiled lists of BCG studies and articles, contacting experts on BCG

Towards joint disease mapping.

This article discusses and extends statistical models to jointly analyse the spatial variation of rates of several diseases with common risk factors. We start with a review of methods for separate analyses of diseases, then move to ecological regression approaches, where the rates from one of the diseases enter as surrogate covariates for exposure. Finally, we propose a general framework for jointly modelling the variation of two or more diseases, some of which share latent spatial fields, but with possibly different risk gradients. In our application, we consider mortality data on oral, oesop

Daredevil barnstorming to the tipping point: new aspirations for the human sciences.

Aviation history provides an apt metaphor for the state of Rasch measurement practice, and its potential future. Flying was initially widely believed to be nothing but a spectacular and dangerous fad. Few saw in it any potential for the huge industry that it is today. The current state of Rasch measurement practice is quite akin to daredevil barnstorming in that the field is focused on isolated demonstrations of disconnected technical effects. Only when the analogues of air traffic control, airports, support staff, training programs, textbooks, and partner industries (hotels, restaurants) are

Skating technique for the straights, based on the optimization of a simulation model.

Although experimental data have been collected to determine the skating techniques of the fastest skaters in the world, the "ideal" skating technique has not been determined (i.e., stroke time, glide time, push-off velocity, and push-off direction). The purpose of this study was to determine the skating technique that results in the fastest steady-state speed on a straight-away using optimization of a simulation model. A dynamic model of a skater was developed that included anatomical and physiological constraints: leg length, instantaneous power, and average power of a skater. Results from th

Probabilistic laser safety: ocular damage models for Q-switched neodymium and ruby lasers.

International standards for the protection of the eyes from the hazards of laser radiation define a nominal ocular hazard distance as a distance beyond which an individual would not be expected to suffer any adverse biological effects. The nominal ocular hazard distance, and any associated hazard zones, are calculated using a deterministic technique. This technique does not consider the likelihood that an eye will be irradiated, or the probability that if any eye is exposed, then some level of ocular damage will result. An alternative method of hazard assessment, without compromising safety, i

Effect of random abnormal cell proportion on specimen classifier performance.

A series of papers had analyzed a simplified model of an automated cytology prescreening configuration consisting of a two-class cell classifier followed by a two-class specimen classifier. This has shown, among other things, that the proportion (p) of abnormal cells on an abnormal specimen dictates the number (N) of cells that must be classified before the specimen can be classified with specified accuracy (Anal Quant Cytol, 2:117-122, 1980). It has also shown that if a system designed assuming one fixed value, po, encounters a specimen with a different fixed value, p, then the specimen class
