Haemoproteus infections (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) kill bird-biting mosquitoes.

Haemoproteus parasites (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) are widespread; some species cause severe diseases in avian hosts. Heavy Haemoproteus infections are often lethal for biting midges (Ceratopogonidae), which transmit avian haemoproteids, but there is no information regarding detrimental effect on other blood-sucking insects. We examined effects of Haemoproteus tartakovskyi (lineage hSISKIN1), Haemoproteus lanii (lineages hRB1and hRBS2) and Haemoproteus balmorali (lineage hCOLL3) on the survival of Ochlerotatus cantans, a widespread Eurasian mosquito. Wild-caught females were infected by all

Wolbachia wAlbB inhibit dengue and Zika infection in the mosquito Aedes aegypti with an Australian background.

Biological control of mosquito vectors using the endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia is an emerging strategy for the management of human arboviral diseases. We recently described the development of a strain of Aedes aegypti infected with the Wolbachia strain wAlbB (referred to as the wAlbB2-F4 strain) through simple backcrossing of wild type Australian mosquitoes with a wAlbB infected Ae. aegypti strain from the USA. Field releases of male wAlbB2-F4 mosquitoes resulted in the successful suppression of wild populations of mosquitoes in the trial sites by exploiting the strain's Wolbachia-induced c

Quantifying the impact of mosquitoes on quality of life and enjoyment of yard and porch activities in New Jersey.

The recent expansion of Aedes albopictus, a day-biting mosquito, to densely inhabited areas in the northeastern Atlantic states of the USA has dramatically increased the problem that mosquitoes create for urban and suburban residents. We quantified the impact of mosquitoes on residents' quality of life within the context of a comprehensive area-wide integrated pest management program to control Ae. albopictus in two counties (Mercer and Monmouth) in New Jersey. We interviewed residents of 121 randomly selected households in both counties between October and November 2010. We asked residents ab

Detection of reduced susceptibility of Anopheles Gambiae s.l.  to pirimiphos-methyl in Benin.

Insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae s.l. threatens malaria vector control strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. Organophosphates such as pirimiphos-methyl have been deployed in Benin through Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) since 2013 as alternatives to pyrethroids. However, no published evidence had documented resistance to this compound. This study provides the first confirmation of reduced susceptibility to pirimiphos-methyl in Benin and investigates potential resistance mechanisms. The study was conducted from January 2022 to December 2024. Larvae of An. gambiae s.l. were collected from

A noninferiority cluster randomised evaluation of a broflanilide indoor residual spraying insecticide, VECTRON T500, for malaria vector control in Tanzania.

Effective malaria vector control is being undermined by the rapid spread of insecticide resistance. VECTRON T500, a new indoor residual spraying (IRS) product containing the active ingredient broflanilide as a 50% wettable powder (WP), was previously shown to be efficacious in experimental hut trials. A two-arm non-inferiority cluster randomized controlled community trial was conducted in Muheza District, Tanga Region, Tanzania. VECTRON T500 was compared to the IRS product Fludora Fusion (clothianidin 50% + deltamethrin 6.25% WP-SB). Sixteen village clusters were pair-matched on baseline vecto

A randomized controlled trial combining house screening and insecticide-treated nets reduces malaria transmission in northwestern Ethiopia.

House screening (HS) of doors, eaves, and windows using wire-mesh has demonstrated potential in the integrated vector management of malaria. However, limited epidemiological data are available to guide its implementation across different ecological settings. In a 16-month randomized controlled trial (follow-up period) conducted across three agroecological areas (dry mountain, plateau highland, and semi-arid) in Jabi Tehnan district, northwestern Ethiopia, treatment houses were equipped with HS combined with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), while control houses received ITNs only. The intervent

Sublethal insecticide exposure of larvae affects the blood-feeding behaviour of adult mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Due to their widespread use for controlling disease vectors and agricultural pests, insecticides have become ubiquitous in the environment, including in water bodies harbouring mosquito larvae. As a result, these larvae are continuously exposed to sublethal doses. Since this has long-lasting effects on the mosquitoes' physiology and life-history, we expected that it may also affect behaviours that underlie the mosquitoes' population dynamics and disease epidemiology, such as egg-laying preference, blood-feeding motivation and host-seeking behaviour. METHODS: Using an insecticide-s

Potent targeted larvicidal activities of marine-derived Bacillus sp. bacterial extracts on mosquito vectors.

Mosquito vector-borne diseases are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity across the globe. Current vector control strategies mainly rely on chemical insecticides, but their incessant usage has resulted in the development of resistance. Insecticidal agents of microbial origin have proven as good alternative tools for vector control of mosquito. In the present study, we examined larvicidal activities of the extracts from culture supernatants of marine bacteria (extracts) against major mosquito vectors from India. Out of 55 tested marine bacterial extracts, 12 extracts caused 90-10

The effect of eave and window modifications on house entry behavior of Anopheles gambiae.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes transmit malaria parasites to humans mostly by biting them indoors at night, entering houses predominantly through ventilation openings such as open eaves and windows. In the study reported here, we studied how flying An. gambiae approach and enter a house, and whether barriers to reduce mosquito house entry alter mosquito flight patterns. METHODS: Stereoscopic high-speed videography was used to reconstruct nearly 70,000 three-dimensional tracks of mosquitoes flying around a house during 30 experimental nights, with five combinations of closed or scree

Characterizing the escalation of pyrethroid resistance and its impact on bed nets efficacy alongside molecular basis in Anopheles funestus from Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Malaria prevention still relies greatly on vector control interventions. However, increasing levels of resistance to pyrethroids across Africa have significantly reduced the efficacy of pyrethroid-based interventions leading to an increase of malaria burden. Consequently, it is imperative to characterize the extent and molecular basis of this resistance. METHODS: This study was conducted from 2020 to 2021 in a South-North transect across Cameroon. WHO tube assay was used to assess the susceptibility profile of Anopheles funestus to the four main classes of insecticides. The effica

Impact of pyriproxyfen on the reproduction of pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae s.l. populations in benin: what implications for vector control?

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of LLINs is compromised by the emergence of pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors. New insecticides that target other sites of action in the mosquito, including pyriproxyfen (PPF), are needed to maintain this efficacy. METHODS: Various populations of An. gambiae s.l. collected from April to November 2022 in 4 Beninese communes and the susceptible strain (Kisumu) were used to assess their susceptibility to PPF via CDC bottle tests and to assess the bioefficacy of Royal guard® (RG) alpha-cypermethrin + pyriproxyfen-impregnated nets via WHO cone tests. Modelling the impact of different intervention packages for malaria control under varying intensities of pyrethroid resistance.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa faces significant challenges from biological threats, such as insecticide resistance and adaptive vector behaviours, as well as increasing financial constraints, which necessitate strategic intervention planning to maximize impact. This study assesses the effectiveness of combining vector control methods, case management, and immunoprevention to reduce malaria in Tanzania, considering varying intensities of insecticide resistance in the main vector species. METHODS: A compartmental model was developed to simulate malaria transmission, incorpor

Prediction of mosquito vector abundance for three species in the Anopheles gambiae complex.

BACKGROUND: The dynamics of vector-borne disease transmission depend on the abundances of vectors. The dominant malaria vector species complex of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato is a target of vector control strategies designed to reduce and eliminate malaria transmission. The three most widely distributed dominant malaria vectors within the species complex are An. arabiensis, An. coluzzii and An. gambiae sensu stricto. METHODS: Previous studies across the extent of the species complex range have been restricted to annual predictions of species occurrence or relative abundance. This study incorp

Spatial and breeding site analysis of Aedes spp. at dengue-prone areas in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Understanding Aedes breeding sites is crucial for effective vector control, yet the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis in Kuala Lumpur is limited. This study explores the spatial distribution and characteristics of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus breeding sites in dengue-prone areas of Bandar Tasik Selatan. Entomological data from the Kuala Lumpur Health Department (2022-2023) were analyzed using Average Nearest Neighbor (ANN), Global Moran's I, and Kernel Density Estimation (KDE). Logistic regression and principal component analyses (PCA) were used to

Characteristics of malaria vector populations and transmission before a randomised controlled trial assessing the efficacy of next-generation insecticide-treated nets in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends mass distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to prevent malaria transmission. Unfortunately, resistance to pyrethroids affects the efficacy of standard ITNs. To overcome this resistance and continue to protect the population, the WHO has recommended new types of ITNs that combine a pyrethroid insecticide with either a synergist (PBO) or a second insecticide, such as chlorfenapyr. This study examines the baseline characteristics of malaria vectors prior to the distribution of three types of insecticide-treated nets as part of a

The non-inferiority of piperonyl-butoxide Yorkool® G3 insecticide-treated nets compared to Olyset®Plus measured by Anopheles arabiensis mortality in experimental huts in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Non-inferiority trials are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to demonstrate that health products show comparable efficacy to that of existing standard of care. As part of the WHO Global Malaria Programme (GMP) process of assessment of malaria vector control products, a second-in-class insecticide-treated net (ITN) must be shown to be non-inferior to a first-in-class product based on mosquito mortality. The public health impact of the first-in-class pyrethroid-piperonyl butoxide (PBO) ITN, Olyset® Plus, has been demonstrated in epidemiological trials in areas with i

Comparative study of the effect of solvents on the efficacy of neonicotinoid insecticides against malaria vector populations across Africa.

BACKGROUND: New insecticides with a novel mode of action such as neonicotinoids have recently been recommended for public health by WHO. Resistance monitoring of such novel insecticides requires a robust protocol to monitor the development of resistance in natural populations. In this study, we comparatively used three different solvents to assess the susceptibility of malaria vectors to neonicotinoids across Africa. METHODS: Mosquitoes were collected from May to July 2021 from three agricultural settings in Cameroon (Njombe-Penja, Nkolondom, and Mangoum), the Democratic Republic of Congo (Nd
