Possible role of brain stem respiratory neurons in mediating vomiting during space motion sickness.

Vomiting is produced primarily by the coordinated action of the respiratory muscles. The object of this study was to determine if brain stem expiratory neurons control abdominal muscle activity during vomiting. We recorded the activity of 27 ventral respiratory group (VRG) expiratory neurons, which are known to be of primary importance for control of abdominal muscle activity during respiration. During fictive vomiting produced by emetic stimulants in decerebrate, paralyzed cats, only one-third of these neurons had the appropriate firing pattern to contribute to abdominal muscle activity durin

Intensification and habituation of experimental motion sickness in squirrel monkeys by repeated horizontal rotation.

The aim of this research was to quantify the development of habituation or intensification of experimental motion sickness induced in Bolivian squirrel monkeys by repeated exposures to horizontal rotation. Incidence, frequency, and latency of vomiting responses were recorded from monkeys rotated daily in a transparent testing chamber at 30 rpm for periods of 1 or 2 hours. Data showed that more than half of the subjects revealed habituation in terms of increased latencies for vomiting. Some showed a tendency to vomit increasingly earlier with multiple daily exposures to rotation. The developmen…

Reducing motion sickness: a comparison of autogenic-feedback training and an alternative cognitive task.

Eighteen men were randomly assigned to three groups matched for susceptibility to Coriolis motion sickness. All subjects were given six Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI) tests separated by 5-d intervals. Treatment Group I subjects were taught to control their own autonomic responses before the third, fourth, and fifth CSSI tests (6 h total training). Group II subjects were given "sham" training in an alternative cognitive task under conditions otherwise identical to those of Group I. Group III subjects received no treatment. Results showed that Group I subjects could withstand the …

Motion sickness: part III--a clinical study based on surgery of posterior fossa tumors.

Three patients who had large, benign cerebellar tumors were operated upon in the sitting position and developed symptoms referable to the temporoparieto-occipital region of the brain 24-48 h postoperatively. They consisted of dizziness, nausea, vomiting, formed and unformed hallucinations, and inversion of image or disorientation in space, some of which were experienced by some of the astronauts and cosmonauts during space flight. Such findings are not due to stimulation of the cerebellum, the site of the lesion, but must come from the cerebral hemisphere. The symptoms were believed to be caus

Motion sickness: part II--a clinical study based on surgery of cerebral hemisphere lesions.

Man has always been intrigued with the localization of function within the brain but has paid insufficient attention to the long and the sho … experienced by some of the cosmonauts and astronauts and it called the authors' attention to this "motion sickness in space." The areas from which such responses may be elicited are the temporoparieto-occipital regions, which are nourished by the posterior cerebral artery and its branches. Vascular insufficiency to this area by spasm of the vessel may be respons …

Motion sickness in cats: a symptom rating scale used in laboratory and flight tests.

The cat is proposed as a model for the study of motion and space sickness. Development of a scale for rating the motion sickness severity in the cat is described. The scale is used to evaluate an antimotion sickness drug, d-amphetamine plus scopolamine, and to determine whether it is possible to predict sickness susceptibility during parabolic flight, including zero-G maneuvers, from scores obtained during ground based trials.

A Study on Autonomous Driving Motion Sickness from the Perspective of Multimodal Human Signals.

In autonomous driving, motion sickness (MS) arises from physical or visual stimuli, or a combination of both. However, objective quantification of MS level (MSL) remains limited beyond questionnaire-based assessments. Using multimodal human signals (physiological and behavioral) collected in an autonomous driving simulator, this study addresses the association between these signals and MSL, across these MS types, by (i) screening and curating a decade of human-signal MS studies (HS-Set) to establish a data-driven foundation for selecting target sensor domains and features, (ii) constructing a …

A comprehensive exploration of motion sickness process analysis from EEG signal and virtual reality.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Virtual reality motion sickness is a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of virtual reality technology. Current virtual reality motion sickness detection methods using EEG signals often fail to identify comprehensive neuro-markers and lack generalizability across multiple subjects. METHODS: To address this issue, we analyzed the pre- and post-induction phases of virtual reality motion sickness, as well as the induction process, from multiple domain features. The features were extracted from time domain, frequency domain, spatial domain and Riemann space ac…

Validating sensory conflict theory and mitigating motion sickness in humans with galvanic vestibular stimulation.

Per sensory conflict theory, vestibular sensory information has been proposed to drive motion sickness given deviations from central expectations. However, the consistency of motion sickness with quantitative predictions of manipulated vestibular sensory conflict remains untested. Here, we evaluated motion sickness symptoms within 10 participants exposed to galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) designed to manipulate vestibular sensory conflict during passive physical translations. Using a computational methodology, equal and opposite GVS waveforms were designed to reduce (Beneficial) or incre…

Insulin level regulators may affect cognitive ability caused by motion sickness: an experimental study.

Abnormal acceleration induced motion sickness (MS) and elevated blood glucose levels, showing obviously cognitive impairments. The mechanism of cognitive impairment caused by MS is still unclear. Here, blood metabolite detection, insulin level regulators, stress hormones, cytokines and MS assessment were conducted for the population and MS model rats, correlation analysis of motion sickness index (MSI) and above factors were conducted by correlation analysis. We found glucose after acceleration was positively correlated with Graybiel's score. Insulin and leptin levels decreased, while ghrelin …

Norms and Correlations of the Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire Short (VIMSSQ-short).

The short version of the Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaires (VIMSSQ-short) was designed to estimate an individual's susceptibility to motion sickness caused by exposure to visual motion, for instance when using smartphones, simulators, or Virtual Reality. The goal of the present paper was to establish normative data of the VIMSSQ-short for men and women based on online surveys and to compare these results with findings from previously published work. VIMSSQ-short data from 920 participants were collected across four online surveys. In addition, the relationship with…

Hold me tight! Effect of active seat belt tension on preventing passenger motion sickness.

In the current context of increasing levels of driving automation for passenger vehicles, addressing the issue of motion sickness has become a major challenge in the perspective of optimising motion comfort and the ride experience. 30 motion sickness-sensitive participants experienced a 20-minute passenger ride consisting of a series of cornering manoeuvres, with a focus on a visuomotor gaming activity. In a within-subjects design involving two experimental conditions, acceleration-coded seat belt tensions were generated as intervention. It was hypothesised that administering the intervention …

Alpha tACS on Parieto-Occipital Cortex Mitigates Motion Sickness Based on Multiple Physiological Observation.

Approximately one third of the population is prone to motion sickness (MS), which is associated with the dysfunction in the integration of sensory inputs. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been widely used to modulate neurological functions by affecting neural oscillation. However, it has not been applied in the treatment of motion sickness. This study aims to investigate changes in brain oscillations during exposure to MS stimuli and to further explore the potential impact of tACS with the corresponding frequency and site on MS symptoms. A total of 19 subjects were recru…

Calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonism reduces motion sickness indicators in mouse migraine models.

BACKGROUND: Migraine and vestibular migraine are disorders associated with a heightened motion sensitivity that provoke symptoms of motion-induced nausea and motion sickness. VM affects ∼3% of adults in the USA and affects three-fold more women than men. Triptans (selective serotonin receptor agonists) relieve migraine pain but lack efficacy for vertigo. Murine models of photophobia and allodynia have used injections of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or other migraine triggers, such as sodium nitroprusside (SNP), to induce migraine sensitivities in mice to touch and light. Yet, there i…
