Disparities in the treatment of movement disorders using deep brain stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a well-established treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET). Although the prevalence of PD and ET can vary by sex and race, little is known about the accessibility of neurosurgical treatments for these conditions. In this nationwide study, the authors aimed to characterize trends in the use of DBS for the treatment of PD and ET and to identify disparities in the neurosurgical treatment of these diseases based on ethnic, racial, sex, insurance, income, hospital, and geographic factors. METHODS: Using the dates January 1, 2012,

Movement disorders related to antidiabetic medications: a real-world pharmacovigilance study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic Mellitus (DM) has progressively emerged as a worldwide health problem, leading to the widespread deployment of antidiabetic drugs as the primary therapy in the global population. The incidence of diabetes medications-related movement disorders (drMD) is noteworthy but underestimated by clinical practitioners. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In order to address the incidence of drMD in DM patients and realize the serious outcomes associated with drMD, we conducted a real-world pharmacovigilance study of 612,043 DM patients using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) …

Movement disorders in dengue encephalitis: a case report and literature review.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the dengue virus (DENV). The clinical manifestations of DENV infection range from mild fe … encephalitis, Japanese encephalitis, and other neurotropic infections, its co-occurrence with mixed movement disorders is rare. We report a case of dengue encephalitis involving a spectrum of movement disorders in the form of jaw opening dystonia, stereotypies, parkinsonism, and tremors during recovery. Magnetic resonance imaging showed bilateral thalami involvement …

"Unvoluntary" Movement Disorders: Distinguishing between Tics, Akathisia, Restless Legs, and Stereotypies.

Tics, stereotypies, akathisia, and restless legs fall at different places on the spectrum of discrete, unwanted and potentially disabling motor routines. Unlike tremor, chorea, myoclonus, or dystonia, this subgroup of abnormal movements is characterized by the subject's variable ability to inhibit or release undesired motor patterns on demand. Though it may be sometimes clinically challenging, it is crucial to distinguish these "unvoluntary" motor behaviors because secondary causes and management approaches differ substantially. To this end, physicians must consider the degree of repetitivenes

Gaps, Controversies, and Proposed Roadmap for Research in Poststroke Movement Disorders.

Poststroke movement disorders (PSMDs) are a common cause of secondary movement disorders. Although prior studies have highlighted the clinical spectrum and phenomenology of PSMDs, there are many knowledge gaps worth addressing. Some of the most important include lack of clinical definitions, variable stroke symptom latencies, and lack of biomarkers for vulnerability for or resilience against developing PSMDs. Collectively, the association between stroke localization and phenomenology is less than 30%, and the long-term clinical prognosis and treatment responses are highly variable. After summa…

Accidental Falls in Patients with Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The significance of falls and their repercussions in Parkinson's disease has been extensively researched. However, despite potentially serious effects on health and quality of life and negative impact on the healthcare system, there is not a sufficient understanding of the role of falls in hyperkinetic movement disorders (HKMDs). This review aims to provide an overview of the prevalence of falls, injuries, and preventive measures in the most common HKMDs. METHODS: Studies up to May 1, 2022 were searched in PubMed using Medical Subjects Headings of relatively prevalent HKMDs associ…

Video Anthology of Movement Disorders Due to Infections in South Asia.

South Asia, encompassing many populous countries including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, is home to a wide variety of infectious diseases several of which are disproportionately prevalent, endemic or distinctive to the region. These result in considerable morbidity and mortality, which can be greatly reduced through public-health measures, timely diagnosis and treatment. Some of these infectious diseases have neurological manifestations including movement disorders either due to the pathogen being neuroinvasive or via an immune-mediated response. For diseases such as Japanese encephalitis, …
