The chondroepitrochlearis muscle is a rare anomaly of the pectoralis major crossing over the neurovascular bundle in the axilla. Often associated with other supernumerary muscles like the arch of Langer, it has been reported in the past as a cause of restriction of arm abduction, cosmetic defects and compression of the ulnary nerve. This case report describes the first known vascular complication due to a chondroepitrochlearis muscle, causing intermittent compression of the axillary vein and thrombosis, associated with pain, upper limb lymphedema, and impaired movements. The diagnosis was susp

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation of spinal sagittal imbalance and life quality.
METHODS: Radiographic analysis for 48 consecutive symptomatic patients with spinal sagittal imbalance was performed with posteroanterior and lateral standing radiographs. There were 12 males and 36 females with an average age of (66.2 ± 8.5) yrs. The measurement parameters included C7PL, thoracic kyphosis (TK), thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK), lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI) and sacral slope (SS). Life quality was assessed with SF-36 questionnaire. Pearman's method was employed to

BACKGROUND: Ichthyosis Follicularis, Atrichia and Photophobia (IFAP) syndrome is a rare genodermatosis due to mutations of the MBTPS2 gene. To date fewer than 40 cases have been described in the literature.
OBJECTIVES: To present the first case of IFAP diagnosed in Poland due to a novel mutation of MBTPS2, and to review the relevant literature on this rare genodermatosis.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A 16-year-old male presented with typical clinical features of IFAP, along with psoriasiform skin plaques, nail dystrophy, facial dysmorphy, mental retardation, severe skeletal abnormalities and chorea-

We present an autosomal-recessive frontonasal dysplasia (FND) characterized by bilateral extreme microphthalmia, bilateral oblique facial cleft, complete cleft palate, hypertelorism, wide nasal bridge with hypoplasia of the ala nasi, and low-set, posteriorly rotated ears in two distinct families. Using Affymetrix 250K SNP array genotyping and homozygosity mapping, we mapped this clinical entity to chromosome 12q21. In one of the families, three siblings were affected, and CNV analysis of the critical region showed a homozygous 3.7 Mb deletion containing the ALX1 (CART1) gene, which encodes the

The effect on pulmonary function of serial VEPTR expansion thoracoplasty was studied longitudinally in anesthetized children with spondylothoracic dysplasia using a special mobile unit. The median age of 24 children at the start of surgery was 4.6 years (1.8-10.8) and most exhibited a moderate-to-severe restrictive lung defect. After a median of 3.2 years (1.0-6.5), their forced vital capacity (FVC) was found to have increased by an average of 11.1%/year. The rate of increase was greater in children who were younger than 6 years at the start of the study than in older children (14.5% versus 6.

Most soccer players have a favoured foot for kicking the ball, and it is believed that this preference may lead to an asymmetry in the strength and flexibility of the lower extremities. This study was designed to determine whether asymmetry in strength and flexibility are present in the legs of soccer players.Forty-one elite and sub-elite soccer players (age 23.4 +/- 3.8 years; height 1.81 +/- 0.06 m; body mass 81.7 +/- 9.9 kg) were studied (data are presented as mean +/- SD). The dynamic strength of knee flexors (hamstrings) and knee extensors (quadriceps) was measured using an isokinetic dyn

We report a patient with duplicate extensor pollicis longus tendons, who complained of inability to extend the thumb fully because of impingement of the musculotendinous junction of the duplicate tendons. Extension of the thumb recovered completely after Lister's tubercle was excised and the extensor retinaculum was released. Selective windowing with highlighting of the soft tissue in the axial T1-weighted magnetic resonance image at the level of the distal radioulnar joint showed two tendons in the third extensor compartment.

A retrospective review of 63 Magnetic Resonance Image studies (yielding 86 ankles) was conducted to find the incidence of the plantaris tendon. Radiographically, the plantaris tendon was visualized 62.8% of the time. Surgical confirmation of this tendon during 18 achilles surgeries yielded 13 "true positives" and 4 "true negatives". Sensitivity was 92.8%; specificity and positive predictive value was 100%, respectively. As a comparison, forty cadaveric specimens were evaluated as well, with the incidence of the plantaris found to be 97.5%. These findings may be useful when considering MRIs as

Windswept deformity, when an individual has 1 knee in extreme varus alignment and the other in severe valgus alignment, is an unusual occurrence in patients presenting for bilateral total knee arthroplasty. This condition was evaluated in 22 patients to examine possible differences between knees in the same individual. Differences between the varus and valgus knees included alignment (P = .0001), as expected, and the position of the lateral joint line (P = .0161) preoperatively. No significant differences were observed between these 2 knee categories in any other comparison preoperatively or p

Heterogeneity has long been recognised within the spectrum of inherited vitreo-retinal disease but the extent of the variation has been less easy to quantify. This has been compounded by the small size and numbers of pedigrees available for the study, and the phenotypic variation both within and between pedigrees. Formation abnormalities in the vitreous architecture have, in the past, been eclipsed by classifications based on general skeletal and morphological differences. Stickler syndrome is the commonest disorder within the spectrum of hereditary vitreous abnormalities and many of the recen

BACKGROUND: Hypomelanosis of Ito (HI), a neurocutaneous disorder characterized by hypopigmented skin lesions along Blaschko's line with multiple accompanying diseases, may occasionally present with sexual precocity.
METHODS: We reviewed cases of HI with sexual precocity reported in the literature and focused on collecting information on other associated organ abnormalities, chromosomal karyotype, and type of sexual precocity. We also present our own case report.
RESULTS: Five children with sexual precocity in HI were studied. All patients were full-term females without significant family his

Incidental findings on female pelvic MRI present diagnostic challenges and may have significant clinical implications. Defined as abnormalities unrelated to the primary imaging indication, these findings have become increasingly prevalent with the expanded use of MRI in gynaecological practice. Standard gynaecological MRI protocols, incorporating T1- and T2-weighted sequences, diffusion-weighted imaging, and contrast-enhanced sequences, facilitate the characterisation of numerous extra-gynaecological abnormalities, ranging from benign to critical lesions. This review proposes a compartment-bas

Lyme disease is a progressive infectious disease caused by the Borrelia species that affects multiple organ systems, including the brain, heart, skin, and musculoskeletal systems. The cardiac manifestations of Lyme disease typically present with atrioventricular nodal conduction abnormalities and, more rarely, myocarditis. We report a case of an immunocompromised 57-year-old woman who presented with acute onset shortness of breath, hypervolemia, injective conjunctiva, and global vision loss of the left eye in the setting of a recent tick bite. Serologic testing confirmed borreliosis, and cardi

22q11.2 duplication syndrome has a frequency of ~1/700 in the intellectual disability population. Despite this frequency, there is limited information on the variable clinical presentation. Although the phenotype and incidence of congenital anomalies are well described for 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, they are not as well understood for individuals with 22q11.2 duplication syndrome. This study is a single-center, retrospective review of patients diagnosed with 22q11.2 duplication syndrome designed to categorize the variable phenotype seen in these individuals. The data suggest that the incidence
