Acute exercise as active inference in chronic musculoskeletal pain, effects on gait kinematics and muscular activity in patients and healthy participants: a study protocol for a randomised controlled laboratory trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a highly prevalent, complex and distressing condition that may negatively affect all domains of life. In view of an active inference framework, and resting on the concept of allostasis, human movement per se becomes a prerequisite for health and well-being while chronic pain becomes a sign of a system unable to attenuate an allostatic load. Previous studies on different subgroups of chronic pain conditions have demonstrated alterations in gait kinematics and muscle activity, indicating shared disturbances in the motor system from long-term allostat

A prospective study of associations between accelerated biological aging and twenty musculoskeletal disorders.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders pose major public health challenges, and accelerated biological aging may increase their risk. This study investigates the association between biological aging and musculoskeletal disorders, with a focus on sex-related differences. METHODS: We analyzed data from 172,332 UK Biobank participants (mean age of 56.03 ± 8.10 years). Biological age was calculated using the KDM-BA and PhenoAge algorithms based on blood biomarkers. Musculoskeletal disorders were diagnosed using the ICD-10 criteria, with sample sizes ranging from 1,182 to 23,668. Logistic regressio

Sickness absence because of musculoskeletal diagnoses and risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality: a nationwide Swedish cohort study.

Knowledge regarding mortality as a potential consequence of being sickness absent because of musculoskeletal diagnoses is almost nonexistent. The association between sickness absence because of musculoskeletal diagnoses and risk of premature death was examined in a prospective, nationwide, population-based cohort study based on Swedish registers. Included were all 4,760,987 individuals who were living in Sweden December 31, 2005, aged 20 to 64 years, and not on disability or old-age pension. Those sickness absent in 2005 because of musculoskeletal diagnoses were compared to those sickness abse

Behavioral approach system activity and self-reported somatic symptoms in fibromyalgia: an exploratory study.

The first objective was to investigate the behavioural activity in the systems of Gray's theory; these are the Behavioural Inhibition System (BIS) and Behavioural Approach System (BAS), in fibromyalgia (FM) patients. The second aim was to assess in FM patients whether there is an association between BIS or BAS with self-reported somatic symptoms. Twenty FM patients and 20 healthy controls completed questionnaire measures of BIS and BAS activity (Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensitivity to Reward Questionnaire), self-reported somatic symptoms (Somatic Symptoms Scale Revised), positive and nega

[Physiotherapeutic and training therapeutic options for instable patellofemoral joints].

In order to allow an adequate and timely restoration of physical performance with an instable patellofemoral joint within the framework of complex therapy strategies, individual post-traumatic cause-and-effect chains and their influence on the hip-leg axis of both the active and passive musculoskeletal systems must be considered as well as joint-specific aspects. For this reason selected relevant neurophysiological aspects of one and multiple joint movement stereotypes will be firstly presented. Subsequently some selected physiotherapeutic measures will be presented and their indication-specif…

The relationship between individual characteristics and musculoskeletal disorders in tuna fishermen in Pelita Jaya Hamlet, West Seram Regency, in 2024.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia is a country with vast marine areas. It is also part of the world's coral reef triangle, which means that Indonesia has various types of coral reef species. This gives Indonesia a very strong maritime potential. Consequently, many Indonesians work as fishermen. In Pelita Jaya Hamlet, the majority of people work as tuna fishermen. Fishing is a job with high physical activity, so fishermen have the potential to experience musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorders are problems that occur in the human muscular and skeletal systems, characterized by pain, numbness,

A patient with scleroderma associated with severe acro-osteolysis: A case report.

Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune chronic sclerotic disease that can damage organs and cause serious complications for the patient such as musculoskeletal manifestations, Gastrointestinal involvement, pulmonary involvement, and renal disease. Acro-osteolysis is one of the musculoskeletal manifestations that causes corrosion of the bones in the fingertips of the hand and feet. In this paper, we have reported the rarely current evidence of severe Acro-osteolysis of the distal phalanges of the hands by radiological x-ray.

A narrative review of ergonomic problems, principles, and potential solutions in surgical operations.

BACKGROUND: Ergonomic development and awareness are critical to the long-term health and well-being of surgeons. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders affect an overwhelming majority of surgeons, and various operative modalities (open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery) differentially affect the musculoskeletal system. Previous reviews have addressed various aspects of surgical ergonomic history or methods of ergonomic assessment, but the purpose of this study is to synthesize ergonomic analysis by surgical modality while discussing future directions of the field based on current perioperativ…

Dehydroepiandrosterone and age-related musculoskeletal diseases: Connections and therapeutic implications.

Musculoskeletal disorders related to ageing are one of the most common causes of mortality and morbidity among elderly individuals worldwide. The typical constitutive components of the musculoskeletal system, including bone, muscle, and joints, gradually undergo a process of tissue loss and degeneration as a result of life-long mechanical and biological stress, ultimately leading to the onset of a series of age-related musculoskeletal diseases, including osteoporosis (OP), sarcopenia, and osteoarthritis (OA). Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a precursor of androgen secreted mainly by the adrenal…

Electric shock, Part II: Nature and mechanisms of injury.

Virtually every part of the body can be injured by electric current. The extent of injury to any given tissue will depend on many factors, including the nature of the tissue and the amount and duration of the electric current. In addition, cardiac and respiratory arrest can be induced by a number of mechanisms with little or no immediate tissue damage. Burns can be caused by the heating of tissue by electric current and by other mechanisms. Secondary trauma may result from falls, explosions, and other events initiated by electric forces. Nervous tissue has the least resistance to current flow

The Prevalence and Factors Associated with Musculoskeletal Pain Among Pilgrims During the Hajj.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal pain is a primary burden on individuals as well as social and health care systems. Annually, 2-3 million pilgrims perform the Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Hajj is highly physically demanding because pilgrims generally move by foot for long distances among a series of religious sites, an effort that may exceed their typical levels of physical activity. To understand the impact of musculoskeletal pain on the completion of the Hajj, it is first necessary to evaluate the extent of the problem. Accordingly, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of musculoskelet

Comparative functional anatomy of the epaxial musculature of dogs (Canis familiaris) bred for sprinting vs. fighting.

The axial musculoskeletal system of quadrupedal mammals is not currently well understood despite its functional importance in terms of facilitating postural stability and locomotion. Here we examined the detailed architecture of the muscles of the vertebral column of two breeds of dog, the Staffordshire bull terrier (SBT) and the racing greyhound, which have been selectively bred for physical combat and high speed sprint performance, respectively. Dissections of the epaxial musculature of nine racing greyhounds and six SBTs were carried out; muscle mass, length, and fascicle lengths were measu…

An unusual case of coccidioidomycosis.

Dissemination of coccidioidomycosis is rare. The skin, musculoskeletal system, and central nervous system have been described as the most common sites of extrapulmonary disease. We present a case of an asymptomatic patient in whom the diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis was made on a lymph node biopsy. The biopsy was performed because of an abnormal mammogram and physical findings suggestive of malignancy.
