Deep cutaneous mycoses (DCMs) and skin fungal infections can cause significant morbidity until diagnosed and treated. In immunocompromised people, Candida spp., Aspergillus spp., and Fusarium spp. fungi can cause these infections, but dermatophytes, especially Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes, are the most common. Superficial erythematous lesions become firm subcutaneous nodules, ulcers, abscesses, or sinus tracts. In advanced cases, DCMs can cause osteomyelitis and bone loss. DCM included mycetoma, a chronic infectious disease of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and bones. In some are…

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis endemic in Latin America. The most frequent form involves a chronic compromise of the lungs, sk … gnosis was confirmed. This case warns about a systematical absence of clinical suspicion of endemic mycoses before the appereance of mucocutaneous lesions, which can be produced by fungi like Paracoccidioides spp, and the importance of considering those mycoses among the differential diagnoses.

In the United States, endemic mycoses--blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, and histoplasmosis--pose considerable clinical and public health challenges. Although the causative fungi typically exist within broadly defined geographic areas or ecologic niches, some evidence suggests that cases have occurred in humans and animals not exposed to these areas. We describe cases acquired outside regions of traditionally defined endemicity. These patients often have severe disease, but diagnosis may be delayed because of a low index of suspicion for mycotic disease, and many more cases probably go entire…

Superficial mycoses are limited to skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes. The most common etiological agents are dermatophytes and yeasts of Candida genus. The aim of this work was to know the etiological agents of dermatomycoses and their clinical presentation. Were analized 2073 samples of skin, hair, nails, and oral mucous membranes obtained from 1817 patients who attended the Microbiology Branch of the Central Laboratory at Dr. J. M. Cullen Hospital, since September 1999 to September 2003. The samples were examined and identified according to the localization and type of lesion. Out of th…

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), caused by Paracoccidioides species, is the main cause of death due to systemic mycoses in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Therapeutic options for PCM and other systemic mycoses are limited and time-consuming, and there are high rates of noncompliance, relapses, toxic side effects, and sequelae. Previous work has shown that the cyclopalladated 7a compound is effective in treating several kinds of cancer and parasitic Chagas disease without significant toxicity in animals. Here we show that cyclopalladated 7a inhibited the in vitro growth of Paracoccidioi…

Invasive mycoses associated with high morbidity and mortality rates are increasing among immunocompromised or severely ill patients. Candida, Cryptococcus, Pneumocystis and Aspergillus are most prevalent agents with varying distribution as regards geography, patient condition and hospital units. The latest multicentre candidaemia survey conducted in Spain, showed C. albicans as the most frequently isolated species followed by C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis and C. krusei in contrast with other European or American studies where C. glabrata was second in rank. Aspergillus spp. is th…

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary mycoses are important diseases of the respiratory tract caused by pulmonary fungal pathogens. These pathogens are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality rates worldwide; however, less attention has been paid to them. In this study we determined the prevalence of pulmonary fungal pathogens among individuals with clinical features of pulmonary tuberculosis at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
METHOD: This was a hospital based cross sectional survey. Sputum samples were collected from each study participant. For each sample, the following tests were performed…

Chromoblastomycosis, phaeohyphomycotic abscesses, and sporotrichosis are fungal diseases usually caused by traumatic inoculation that cause substantial morbidity and can lead to long-term sequalae and inability to work. Few studies have analyzed the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of these mycoses in the United States, particularly among minority populations. We estimated prevalence and described features of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) persons with these diseases using Indian Health Service (IHS) data during 2016-2022. Chromoblastomycosis and phaeohyphomycotic absces…

Humans have a broad array of host defense mechanisms against fungal invasion. Most serious mycoses occur in patients who have defects in one or more of these defenses. Defense mechanisms not related to the immune system include barriers created by the skin and mucous membrane, competition from the normal indigenous bacterial flora, mucociliary clearance mechanisms, and fungistatic products in serum such as metal chelators. Among the immune mechanisms, activation of the complement system and generation of an antibody response facilitates recognition of fungi by specific receptors on immune cell…

Cutaneous mycoses are common infections whose treatment has become more complex due to increasing antifungal resistance and the need for prolonged therapies, hindering patient adherence and increasing the incidence of adverse effects. Consequently, the use of physical therapies, especially photodynamic therapy (PDT), has increased for the treatment of onychomycosis due to its antimicrobial capacity being mediated by the production of reactive oxygen species. This study investigates the in vitro effect of applying blue light (448 nm) or red light (645 nm), alone or together with terbinafine, on…

A case of paracoccidioidomycosis, previously treated for tuberculosis for two years, is reported. Combined treatment with oral ketoconazole and sulfamethoxypyridazine was successful. The problem of a low index of suspicion among physicians for tropical mycoses, which are very rarely observed in Italy, is discussed.

Recent concepts on the role of non-specific (normal) and specific (immune) defence mechanisms against fungal infection are discussed on the basis of the evidence obtained from experimental animals. Commonly occurring systemic mycoses, i.e. candidosis (candidiasis), cryptococcosis and histoplasmosis, are discussed.
