BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting, hypophosphatemia, reduction of 1,25-dihydroxyl vitamin D, and bone calcification disorders. Tumors associated with TIO are typically phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors that are bone and soft tissue origin and often present as a solitary tumor. The high production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) by the tumor is believed to be the causative factor responsible for the impaired renal tubular phosphate reabsorption, hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia. Complete removal of the t

PURPOSE: Nasopharyngeal teratoma is a very rare neoplasm that develops on the oronasal cavity as an expanding and cavity-filling lesion. We present a rare case of nasopharyngeal teratoma associated with a cleft palate and bifid tongue in a patient with Pierre Robin syndrome.
METHODS: A preterm male neonate of 33 weeks and 6 days was referred to our department. A protruding solid mass with approximately 7.0 × 4.0-cm size arising from the vomer and combined cleft palate and tongue covered with pinkish skin with lanugo were observed. In addition, there was a bandlike tissue connecting vomer and

Fibroblastic mesenchymal tumors show a spectrum of biological behavior, from benign to fully malignant. We report our experience of two decades with a distinctive, previously undescribed low-grade fibroblastic tumor of the superficial soft tissues. Eighteen cases were identified within our consultation files, previously coded as 'low-grade sarcoma, not further classified' and 'malignant fibrous histiocytoma, low grade'. The tumors occurred in adults (median age 38 years, range 20-76 years) of either sex (10 males and 8 females), ranged in size from 1.5 to 10 cm (mean 4.1 cm), and were confined

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an extremely rare metabolic bone disease and the occult offending tumor arising in facies cranii is even more uncommon. In this report, we described 2 middle-aged females with TIO caused by the tumor in facies cranii, which had ever been misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis. Case 1 was present with diffuse bone pain and muscle weakness for 4 years, as well as esotropia in the right eye for 1 month. Case 2 was present with progressive bone pain in low back and hip for 2 years. Biochemical studies both showed persistent hypophosphatemia and urinary over wastin

BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare clinical entity in which secondary osteomalacia is induced by tumor-related products. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) mRNA is overexpressed in the tumor tissue, leading to impaired reabsorption of phosphorus in the renal tubules and hypophosphatemia. Curative treatment is considered to be total resection of the tumor.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 53-year-old woman had experienced systemic bone pain and muscle weakness for several years. She had refractory hypophosphatemia and marked elevation of serum FGF-23 level. Whole body imaging event

Three cases of cementoblastoma (CB) and three cases of osteoblastoma (OB) were histologically compared. The aim of the study was to investigate whether CB and OB are different in other aspects than being connected with a tooth. CB cases were the following: maxillary lesions in a 23-year-old woman and a 22-yr-old man and a mandibular lesion in a 28-yr-old man. In one case the tumor was fused to the roots of two teeth. Of the OB cases, one occurred in the mandible of a 27-yr-old man, one in the ankle of a 19-yr-old male and one in the thoracic vertebrae of a 27-yr-old man. Histologically, CB and

Unilateral maxillary or mandibular molars were extracted from twenty-four, 25-day-old male syrian golden hamsters; 25 days after extraction, 20 received MNU intragastrically twice a week for 3 months. All animals were killed 1 month later. High degrees and incidence of invasion of gingival SCC were observed in dentulous jaws without functional occlusion, followed by dentulous jaws with functional occlusion and edentulous jaws. Invasion of carcinomas with extensive bone destruction was observed commonly in the gingiva of dentulous maxillary jaws without functional occlusion, but was scarcely ob

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid isthmus is defined as the thin band connecting thyroid tissue between both lateral thyroid lobes. Recently, a possible association between thyroid nodules located in the isthmus and malignancy was proposed. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) categories between nodules from the isthmus and nodules from both thyroid lobes.
METHODS: All fine needle aspiration cytology procedures performed between January 2016 and December 2019 at the Pathology Institute of Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, were

Palisaded neutrophilic granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) presents as skin-colored to erythematous papules symmetrically distributed on extensor extremities. Histologically, interstitial and/or palisaded granulomatous infiltrates are present with neutrophils and leukocytoclasis. Together with interstitial granulomatous dermatitis (IGD), PNGD is considered a reactive granulomatous dermatitis to a systemic trigger including connective tissue disease, infection, medication reaction, and less commonly malignancy. We present the second case of PNGD leading to diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma. A 47-year-o

Tumour-induced osteomalacia (TIO), or oncogenic osteomalacia, is a paraneoplastic syndrome marked by hypophosphataemia, renal phosphate wasting, bone pain, weakness, and fractures. The syndrome has been reported with both benign and malignant tumours including parotid gland basal cell tumours, thyroid carcinomas, colon adenocarcinomas, and prostate cancer. Often, the syndrome is marked by an insidious course during which patients present with generalised bony pain and weakness, which do not resolve until the underlying tumour is identified and treated. We present a case of a patient with Parki

Tumour-induced osteomalacia is caused by tumorous production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) leading to urinary phosphate wasting, hypophosphataemia and decreased vitamin D activation. The resulting osteomalacia presents with muscle weakness and bone pain but progresses to multiple pathological fractures. Patients often remain undiagnosed for years with severe physical, psychological and economic ramifications. A young woman presented with multiple spontaneous fractures including bilateral femoral fractures. Laboratory tests revealed severe hypophosphataemia, elevated bone turnover mark

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by tumoral production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). The hallmark biochemical features include hypophosphatemia due to renal phosphate wasting, inappropriately normal or frankly low 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D, and inappropriately normal or elevated FGF23. TIO is caused by typically small, slow growing, benign phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) that are located almost anywhere in the body from the skull to the feet, in soft tissue or bone. The recent identification of fusion genes in a significant subset of PMT

The potential of peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) is described in a case of recurrent inoperable phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor causing osteomalacia in the left basiocciput, for which the patient had undergone surgery twice previously. After one cycle of PRRT, there was good symptomatic improvement, with a modest reduction in uptake on both 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT and 18F-FDG PET/CT suggesting a favorable response. Hence, treatment with a second cycle was considered. Being somatostatin receptor-avid, this rare group of tumors when inoperable or recurrent may potentially be targeted wi

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) and Auto Immune Hepatitis (AIH) are autoimmune diseases of the liver which highlighted with slow destructive process of intra hepatic small bile ducts. As a result of these damages cholestasis and over the time tissue damage will happen, which leads to scarring, fibrosis and finally cirrhosis. Some patients may present with clinical and biochemical features of both conditions, which is called "Overlap syndrome". Here we are reporting a case of PBC-AIH overlap syndrome that primarily diagnosed as gallbladder carcinoma and went under operation and finally histolog

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, benign epithelial mixed odontogenic tumor. It occurs as an intraosseous lesion, generally asymptomatic and more prevalent in children and adolescent. AFO is found on radiographic evaluation of patients with unerupted or impacted teeth in many cases. Histological examination reveals a fibrous soft tissue, islands of odontogenic epithelium and a disordered mixture of dental tissues. The treatment modality in most cases involves conservative surgery with enucleation. We present a case of 13-year-old boy with a missing right central incisor, mimicking-l

Approximately 5% of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) have deletions of the entire NF1 gene. The phenotype usually includes early onset, large number of neurofibromas, presence of congenital anomalies, cognitive deficiency, and variable dysmorphic features and growth abnormalities. Connective tissue abnormalities are not generally recognised as a part of NF1 microdeletion syndrome, but mitral valve prolapse, joint laxity, and/or soft skin on the palms have been reported in a few patients. We describe clinical findings in six newly diagnosed patients with NF1 microdeletions, five of

Solar lentigines and ephelides are different types of pigmented skin lesions predominantly present on sun-exposed skin. Both lesions are risk indicators for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Solar lentigines are considered as a sign of photodamage although well-conducted epidemiological studies are lacking on this subject. Ephelides are associated with fair skin type and red hair. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation of sun-exposure estimates with solar lentigines and ephelides. In the Leiden Skin cancer Study 577 patients with malignant melanoma and/or non-melanom
