Treatments and survival outcomes of patients with synchronous and metachronous metastatic bladder cancer: A population-based nationwide cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare clinicopathological characteristics, treatment patterns and overall survival outcomes of contemporary patients diagnosed with synchronous (smBC) or metachronous metastatic bladder cancer (mmBC) in the Netherlands. METHODS: All patients newly diagnosed with bladder cancer in the Netherlands in 2020-2023 were identified through the Netherlands Cancer Registry. The smBC group consisted of patients with mBC at initial diagnosis in 2020 - 2023. The mmBC group included all patients who developed metastatic disease <3 years after being diagnosed with muscle-invasiv

Synchronous metastases from colorectal cancer. Treatment and long-term survival compared to patients with metachronous metastases: a population-based study from Central Norway 2001-2015.

BACKGROUND: Reliable and modern information on primary evaluation, treatment, and long-term survival rates for patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) metastases are needed. Whether synchronous CRC metastases carry a worse prognosis than metachronous is still debated. METHODS: Population-based study on 7,950 CRC patients from Central Norway, 2001- 2015. Of these, 1,843 (23.2%) had synchronous metastases and of radically operated patients with stage I-III disease 1,117 (20.1%) developed metachronous metastases. The treatment strategies and outcomes for patients with metastases were analyzed, str

Metachronous multiple carcinomas arising at a colostomy site 15 years after abdominoperineal resection: a case report and review of Japanese literature.

Metachronous multiple carcinomas at the site of a stoma is a rare condition after surgery. A 67-year-old man with a second tumor at the stoma site 15 years after abdominoperineal resection for rectal carcinoma is reported herein with a review of the Japanese literature. The patient visited our hospital 20 years after initial surgery, presenting with constipation and increasing tumor size in the stoma. A biopsy specimen of the tumor revealed adenocarcinoma. Block resection of the sigmoid colon and colostomy with the adjacent abdominal wall was performed. Histopathological examination showed a w

Oral tongue cancer in a patient with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer: A case report and review of the literature.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by mutations of mismatch repair genes leading to the early development of multiple malignancies. The most common malignancy is colorectal cancer but there is a strong association with malignancies of the ovary, endometrium, small intestine, stomach, skin, brain, and pancreas. We report a case of a 35-year-old female with a history of known HNPCC who presented with adenocarcinoma of the small intestine as well as a synchronous oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma. The patient underwent a combined on

Acute oxalate nephropathy due to pancreatic atrophy in newly diagnosed pancreatic carcinoma.

Acute oxalate nephropathy can occur due to primary hyperoxaluria and secondary hyperoxaluria. The primary hyperoxalurias are a group of autosomal recessive disorders of endogenous oxalate overproduction. Secondary hyperoxaluria may occur as a result of excess dietary intake, poisoning with oxalate precursors (ethylene glycol), or enteric hyperoxaluria. The differential diagnosis of enteric hyperoxaluria includes inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome, bariatric surgery (with jejunoileal bypass or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass), celiac disease, partial colectomy, and chronic pancreatitis.

[Post-radiation dedifferentiation of meningioma into chondroblastic osteosarcoma].

We report a case of post-radiation dedifferentiation of meningothelial meningioma into chondroblastic osteosarcoma. The tumor developed in a 61-year-old man, seven years after adjuvant stereotactical radiotherapy of recurring meningioma. Histologically, there was a continuous transition from atypical meningioma into chondroblastic osteosarcoma. The patient died three weeks after the surgery, without additional oncological treatment. To our knowledge, this case represents only the second reported case of post-radiation dedifferentiation of meningioma into osteosarcoma.

[Cancers associated with cancer of the esophagus].

Secondary neoplastic localisations observed in oesophageal epidermoid carcinoma are essentially in the upper oesophagogastric tract, in particular the hypopharynx, the oropharynx and the buccal cavity. The associated morbidity of the mucous membrane of the upper oesophagogastric tract and that of the oesophagus, with regard to the risk of developing epidermoid carcinoma, is linked to a common risk factor, simultaneous alcohol and tobacco intoxication. The high frequency of these secondary localisations, which can be synchronous or metachronous, suggests they should be routinely sought during p

Routine endoscopy for esophageal cancer is suggestive for patients with oral, oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer.

BACKGROUND: This study attempted to reveal the incidence and risk of synchronous and metachronous esophageal cancer in subjects with oral, oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer based on a population-wide database in Taiwan. METHODS: We retrieved data for this cross-sectional study from the Taiwanese Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. The study group included 2,965 subjects who had received their first-time diagnosis of oral/oropharyngeal/hypopharyngeal cancer in 2002∼2009. We assigned the date of their first diagnosis of oral/oropharyngeal/hypopharyngeal cancer as the index date.

Multiple primary malignancies in patients with prostate cancer: increased risk of secondary malignancies after radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: New treatment strategies for prostate cancer have recently been developed, but multiple malignancies remain a major concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of multiple malignancies and to analyze the risk of secondary malignancies after radiotherapy for prostate cancer. METHODS: From 2000 to 2011, 150 patients with prostate cancer were treated with curative radiotherapy in our department. Patient age range was 54-92 years (median, 70 years), and the follow-up period was 4-142 months (median, 48 months). The incidence of multiple primary cancers was compa

Clinicopathological study on upper urinary tract tumors and associated bladder tumors.

We reviewed 82 patients with 83 upper urinary tract tumors and investigated those who had associated bladder tumors. Of these patients, 7 (9%) had previous bladder tumors, 14 (17%) had concurrent bladder tumors, and 18 (22%) subsequently developed bladder tumors. As 1 patient subsequently developed a bladder and a upper urinary tract tumor at different times, 38 patients (46%) had associated bladder tumors. The time interval between the occurrence of a previous bladder tumor and the subsequent upper urinary tract tumor was 11 to 144 months (mean: 41 months), while that between an upper urinary

Tonsillar metastasis: A rare presentation of gastric carcinoma.

Metastatic carcinoma of the tonsil is uncommon. Tonsillar metastases rarely become apparent before the diagnosis of the primary neoplasm. We describe only the second reported case of tonsillar metastasis as a presenting feature of gastric carcinoma. A review of the literature is also discussed.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of bilateral breast cancer in an Australian cohort.

PURPOSE: Uncertainty remains about the impact of bilateral breast cancer. Characteristics and outcomes of unilateral and bilateral breast cancer were compared within an Australian multi-institutional cohort. METHODS: Demographic, tumour and treatment characteristics were compared among unilateral (n = 2336) and bilateral cases (52 synchronous, 35 metachronous) using descriptive analyses. Disease-specific outcomes were investigated using Cox regression modelling to adjust for prognostic and treatment factors. RESULTS: Factors associated with increased risk of bilateral breast cancer included

Multiple primary melanomas: analysis of 49 cases.

Development of multiple primary melanomas is a rare but well recognized disease, with an estimated incidence ranging from 1.75% to 8.5% in several series. The clinical, histological and epidemiological characteristics of 49 patients, identified from 2470 with histologically confirmed melanoma, are described in this study. Thirty-five of these patients had two primary melanomas, 11 had three melanomas and three had four, five and six melanomas, respectively. Diagnosis was concurrent in 22 patients (45%); in the remaining cases the median time interval between the first and second melanoma was 2

Second malignant neoplasms in children: an update from the Late Effects Study Group.

This paper presents an update from the Late Effects Study Group on 292 cases of second malignant neoplasms (SMN) occurring in individuals who were diagnosed with their first neoplasm in childhood. Data are presented regarding the types of first and second neoplasm, the therapy administered, and the predisposing factors. Of the 292 cases (308 SMN), the most common primary was retinoblastoma followed by Hodgkin's disease, soft-tissue sarcomas, and Wilms' tumor. This is not similar to the relative frequency of these cancers in children but rather reflects specific risk factors. Bone sarcomas were

Survival of second and multiple primary tumors in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma in the betel quid chewing area.

We report the incidence, risk factor(s), and overall survival (OS) of second/multiple primary tumors (SPTs/MPTs) in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients in betel quid chewing areas. Of 816 untreated OSCC patients who had radical surgery, 15.7% had either synchronous or metachronous SPTs. The SPTs (70.3%) were at the oral cavity. SPTs (18.8%) developed third primary tumors, with a significantly higher incidence in synchromous than metachronous SPTs (p=0.001). An optimal, but significantly lower, 5-year OS was observed in patients with SPTs/MPTs than without (54.0% vs. 67.2%, p=0.

Patterns of surgery in patients belonging to amsterdam-positive families.

INTRODUCTION: The phenotype of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer includes an 80 percent lifetime risk of colorectal cancer, a predominance of lesions proximal to the splenic flexure, and a high incidence of synchronous and metachronous neoplasia. Although prophylactic colectomy is rarely advised for patients with a hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer genotype and a normal colon, the presence of advanced neoplasia in the context of a qualifying family history or a hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer genotype has led to such recommendations. We performed this study to documen

Risk factors and age-incidence relationships for contralateral breast cancer.

The nation-wide Swedish Family-Cancer Database was used to analyze the risk of contralateral breast cancer among 72,092 women with unilateral breast cancer. Contralateral breast cancer, defined as being diagnosed 6 months or more after the first breast cancer, affected 2,529 women (3.5%). In a young age group the incidence of contralateral breast cancer was 50 times higher than the incidence of first breast cancer; for all contralateral breast cancer the difference was 5-fold. Because only 1 breast was at risk for contralateral breast cancer, the true differences to unilateral cancer were 2 ti
