PURPOSE: In C5 and C6 brachial plexus avulsion lesions, elbow flexion, shoulder abduction, and external rotation are the functions that need to be restored. Because the proximal stumps are not available for grafting, surgical repair is based on nerve transfers. The purpose of this study was to describe and report the results of the use of multiple nerve transfers in the reconstruction of these avulsion injuries.
METHODS: Ten patients had multiple nerve transfers: cranial nerve XI to the suprascapular nerve, ulnar nerve fascicles to the biceps motor branch, and triceps long or lateral head mot…

This study aims to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and predictors of contralateral C7 nerve transfer (CC7) for central upper limb spastic hemiplegia and develop a preoperative prediction model. A retrospective analysis included 58 stroke patients with spastic hemiplegia undergoing CC7 surgery. Composite efficacy endpoints assessed efficacy. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression identified predictive factors. A nomogram prediction model was built and validated using receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis. CC7 significantly improved aff…

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brachial plexus injuries can significantly impair shoulder function, particularly abduction and external rotation. Various nerve transfer techniques are available to restore these functions. This meta-analysis evaluates the efficacy of different nerve transfers for shoulder abduction and external rotation recovery to identify the most effective surgical approaches.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Mendeley up to June 2025 following PRISMA guidelines. Studies were included if they involved nerve transfers to the suprascapular and/or axillary nerv…

BACKGROUND: Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) is a prevalent compressive neuropathy addressed through various treatments, including the anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) supercharge end-to-side (SETS) transfer for advanced CuTS. Decision to add AIN-SETS is based on various indicators and protocols, but deciding on the appropriate method for borderline cases can be challenging. Therefore, this study aims to non-invasively examine the cubital tunnel anatomy of patients using CT scans and compare the findings with existing indicators and measurements, to determine if they can serve as supplementary

Introduction: Concomitant nerve injuries with musculoskeletal injuries present a challenging problem. The goals of nerve reconstruction for the shoulder include shoulder abduction and external rotation. When patients fail to achieve acceptable shoulder external rotation and shoulder abduction, tendon transfers such as trapezius transfer offer a reliable option in the subsequent stage. Case Presentation: A 32-year-old male presented with weak external rotation in his left shoulder, after previous axillary nerve reconstruction. He received the ipsilateral lower trapezius transfer with the aim of

Current strategies for the chronic stage of spinal cord injury (SCI) had seen little progress. In this report, we present the use of contralateral L5 nerve transfer for the treatment of incomplete SCI patients with unilateral lower limb dysfunction in two male patients. One was diagnosed with L2 vertebral fracture and dislocation combined with coni medullaris injury 10 months prior, and the other was diagnosed with T6 and T7 vertebral fractures with SCI 24 months prior. The patients were treated with decompression surgery within 24 hr after injury. The patients reached a recovery plateau after…

OBJECTIVE: Previous patient surveys have shown that patients with spinal cord or cauda equina injuries prioritize recovery of bladder function. The authors sought to determine if nerve transfer after long-term decentralization restores bladder and sphincter function in canines.
METHODS: Twenty-four female canines were included in this study. Transection of sacral roots and hypogastric nerves (S Dec) was performed in 6 animals, and 7 animals underwent this procedure with additional transection of the L7 dorsal roots (L7d+S Dec). Twelve months later, 3 L7d+S Dec animals underwent obturator-to-p…

BACKGROUND Surgeons usually transfer the contralateral C7 to the median nerve on the injured side via a nerve graft to recover sensation and movement in a paralyzed hand. The purpose of our study was to determine whether NRG-1 affects the recovery of nerve function in brachial plexus injury after contralateral C7 nerve root transfer in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS An injury model of left brachial plexus and contralateral C7 nerve root transfer was established. Four weeks after the operation, NRG-1 expression was examined by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction and

OBJECTIVE: Various types of neurovascular free-muscle transfers have been reported as surgical treatments for long-standing facial paralysis. Among one-stage methods, two approaches, that is, latissimus dorsi transfer with nerve suturing to the contralateral facial nerve and gracilis transfer with nerve suturing to the ipsilateral masseteric nerve, have recently become popular. The former method has the advantage of making spontaneous smiling possible, but the contraction strength of the transferred muscle varies, whereas the latter approach has the advantage of guaranteeing voluntary contract

Neuropathic pain due to peripheral nerve injury may be associated with abnormal central nerve activity. Glial cell-line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) can help attenuate neuropathic pain in different animal models of nerve injury. However, whether GDNF can ameliorate neuropathic pain in the spinal cord dorsal horn (SCDH) in constriction-induced peripheral nerve injury remains unknown. We investigated the therapeutic effects of adenoviral-mediated GDNF on neuropathic pain behaviors, microglial activation, pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and programmed cell death in a chronic constricti

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral dysplasia (GHD) commonly occurs following brachial plexus birth injuries and, if not addressed appropriately, can result in shoulder dysfunction. Despite its severity, there are no clearly defined surgical criteria for correcting GHD. This study compares the outcomes of end-to-end and reverse end-to-side spinal accessory to suprascapular nerve transfers for correction of GHD.
METHODS: All patients presented with shoulder functional limitations, as indicated by Active Movement Scale (AMS) scores in shoulder abduction, shoulder flexion, and external rotation, and eviden…

Luminescence-based sensing provides a method for the rapid detection of nerve agents. Previous approaches have generally focused on sensing materials containing a nucleophilic group that can react with the electrophilic phosphorus atom found in nerve agents. Herein we report an alternative approach for the detection of phosphonofluoridate-based G-series nerve agents that utilizes the fact they contain hydrogen fluoride. We have developed silylated sensing materials based on an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reporter compound, 2-[benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl]phenol. Thin films of

INTRODUCTION: Radial nerve palsy following humeral shaft fractures is common, but management of massive nerve gaps remains a challenge. While nerve grafting is an option, defects exceeding 10 cm often yield poor results.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 18-year-old male, a chronic smoker, who sustained a complete 10-cm radial nerve loss; management consisted of a triple tendon transfer.
RESULTS: At 14 months, he achieved complete extension and successfully returned to his demanding professional activity.
DISCUSSION: The use of the flexor carpi ulnaris for digital and thumb extens
