Independence of aversive and pain mechanisms in the dorsal periaqueductal gray matter of the rat.

Electrical stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray (DPAG) elicits autonomic responses similar to those following peripheral pain stimulation. The present study analyzes the effects of morphine and midazolan applied to the same DPAG site on the autonomic responses induced by both types of stimulation. Both drugs attenuated the increase in heart rate and blood pressure induced by DPAG stimulation while attenuating only the increase in heart rate induced by pain stimulation. These results suggest that the neural substrates of the autonomic expression of the DPAG and pain stimulation are dif

Larval exposure to sertraline induces dose- and time-dependent remodeling of neuronal alternative splicing in adult Drosophila melanogaster.

BACKGROUND: Alternative splicing is a central procedure that increases the variety of the transcriptome and helps regulate several neuronal processes. Various pharmacological factors have the capacity to alter splicing patterns, which could potentially affect cellular function. Sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor widely used in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, also regulates intracellular pathways linked with calcium signaling and other cellular processes. However, information about its potential impact on the post-transcriptional regulation of the transcriptome is

Sex Differences in Neural Activity during Worry Induction and Reappraisal in Late Life.

BACKGROUND: Severe worry - a symptom of mood and anxiety disorders - is more prevalent in women than men across the lifespan. The neural processes contributing to this difference remain unclear, especially in older adults where severe worry is related to higher cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative processes. In this study, we analyzed regional brain activation during an in-scanner worry induction task to elucidate the neural basis of worry-related sex differences among older adults. METHODS: 131 older adults completed a fMRI worry induction and reappraisal task. Voxel-wise t-tests were used

Situation-Based Neuromorphic Memory in Spiking Neuron-Astrocyte Network.

Mammalian brains operate in very special surroundings: to survive they have to react quickly and effectively to the pool of stimuli patterns previously recognized as danger. Many learning tasks often encountered by living organisms involve a specific set-up centered around a relatively small set of patterns presented in a particular environment. For example, at a party, people recognize friends immediately, without deep analysis, just by seeing a fragment of their clothes. This set-up with reduced "ontology" is referred to as a "situation." Situations are usually local in space and time. In th

Disrupted functional network topology in tension-type headache: A cross-sectional magnetoencephalography study.

BackgroundTension-type headache (TTH) is the most common primary headache, yet its neural basis remains unclear. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) combined with graph-theoretical analysis enables precise mapping of functional brain networks. This study aimed to identify network-level connectivity alterations in TTH using resting-state MEG and graph-based metrics.MethodsWe analyzed resting-state MEG data from 27 TTH patients during the interictal period and 37 age- and gender-matched healthy controls, all with eyes closed. Functional connectivity (FC) across 1-45 Hz was mapped and analyzed using gra

Cell necrosis, intrinsic apoptosis and senescence contribute to the progression of exencephaly to anencephaly in a mice model of congenital chranioschisis.

Exencephaly/anencephaly is one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality and the most extreme open neural tube defect with no current treatments and limited mechanistic understanding. We hypothesized that exencephaly leads to a local neurodegenerative process in the brain exposed to the amniotic fluid as well as diffuse degeneration in other encephalic areas and the spinal cord. To evaluate the consequences of in utero neural tissue exposure, brain and spinal cord samples from E17 exencephalic murine fetuses (maternal intraperitoneal administration of valproic acid at E8) were analyzed and c

Long-term hydrocephalus alters the cytoarchitecture of the adult subventricular zone.

Hydrocephalus can develop secondarily to a disturbance in production, flow and/or absorption of cerebrospinal fluid. Experimental models of hydrocephalus, especially subacute and chronic hydrocephalus, are few and limited, and the effects of hydrocephalus on the subventricular zone are unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of long-term obstructive hydrocephalus on the subventricular zone, which is the neurogenic niche lining the lateral ventricles. We developed a new method to induce hydrocephalus by obstructing the aqueduct of Sylvius in the mouse brain, thus simulating aq

Neuro-osteology.

Neuro-osteology stresses the biological connection during development between nerve and hard tissues. It is a perspective that has developed since associations were first described between pre-natal peripheral nerve tissue and initial osseous bone formation in the craniofacial skeleton (Kjaer, 1990a). In this review, the normal connection between the central nervous system and the axial skeleton and between the peripheral nervous system and jaw formation are first discussed. The early central nervous system (the neural tube) and the axial skeleton from the lumbosacral region to the sella turci

Neural speech encoding in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: an exploratory study using frequency-following responses.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is associated with neurodevelopmental impairments, including listening difficulties not always explained by peripheral hearing loss, suggesting alterations at the level of neural auditory processing. The frequency-following response (FFR) provides an objective measure of neural speech encoding and may offer insight into auditory function in this population. METHODS: Twenty-five normal-hearing participants were included: 11 individuals with FASD and 14 controls. Speech-evoked FFRs were recorded using a 160 ms /da/ stimulus at 80 dB SPL with a

Hamstrings corticomotor and neuromechanical function in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Hamstrings neuromuscular alterations are common after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction; however, their neural origins remain unclear. While quadriceps corticospinal function after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is well studied, similar data for hamstrings are lacking. We aimed to assess hamstrings corticomotor and neuromechanical function and their associations in individuals with ACLR. Twenty-three adults with primary, unilateral ACLR via hamstrings tendon autograft were assessed (time from surgery = 46.9 ± 26.3). Corticomotor function was quantified via active motor threshold (AMT)

Altered Neurobehavioral Reward Response Predicts Psychotic-Like Experiences in Youth Exposed to Cannabis Prenatally.

BACKGROUND: Rates of prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) are rising with increasingly permissive legislation, which may be a risk factor for psychosis. Disrupted reward-related neural circuitry may underlie this relationship. We aim to elucidate neural mechanisms involved in the association between PCE and youth-onset psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) by probing correlates of reward anticipation, a neurobehavioral marker of endocannabinoid-mediated dopaminergic function. METHODS: This longitudinal, prospective study analyzed task-related functional neuroimaging data from baseline (N = 11,368), 2

Altered resting-state amygdala-cerebellar functional connectivity is associated with intolerance of uncertainty in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) plays an important role in the pathology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The amygdala and anterior insula (AI) appear to be important neural correlates of IU. However, the relationship between altered resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and IU in OCD patients has not been reported. METHODS: This study recruited 39 patients with OCD and 45 healthy controls (HC). IU was measured using the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS). The seed-to-voxel method was used to construct rsFC maps. Between-group differences in rsFC and their correl

When losing hurt together: investigating the role of Empathy during a card game by EEG Hyperscanning.

Social neuroscience research investigates the neural basis of social cognition, which encompasses various cognitive abilities involved in processing social information, such as empathy. Empathy is a key function driving human socialization and can be defined as the ability to perceive others' feelings. When studying the neural basis of this process, recent research has highlighted the limitations of the traditional approach, which focuses on the study of the brain activity of a single subject engaged in a social interaction. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of social behavior, neuros

From Association to Mechanism: Excessive Exposure to Tin During Pregnancy May Cause Fetal Neural Tube Defects.

Despite widespread human exposure to tin, its health effects remain poorly understood. This study examined the role of tin in neural tube defects (NTDs) through a case-control study and animal experiments. Tin levels in maternal serum and placentas were analyzed in 200 NTD cases and 400 controls to explore potential associations. Elevated tin concentrations in maternal serum were associated with an increased risk of NTDs, with an odds ratio of 2.31 (95% CI, 1.13-4.75), with similar associations found for placental tin and tributyltin (TBT) exposure. In animal experiments, pregnant mice exposed
