[Clinical analysis of 70 neuropathologic cases of multiple sclerosis].

A retrospective study of clinical files of 70 pathologically confirmed cases of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) (53 women and 17 men), selected from the records of the Laboratoire de Neuropathologie Charles Foix (Hôpital de la Salpêtrière) was performed. The following data were recorded and analysed by a computer program (HP 85): sex, age of onset of disease, clinical course (classified into Remittent, Remittent-Progressive, Progressive and Acute) and the date of each new neurological symptom or sign. The mean age of onset was 36.8 +/- 12. In women, the disease began earlier (34.6 +/- 12) and the dura

Neuropathological studies of experimental toxocariasis in lead exposed mice.

Binghamton Heterogeneous stock mice intubated with embryonated eggs from the common parasite of dogs, Toxocara canis, display dramatic alterations in behavior. Many of these behavioral changes are markedly attenuated if mice are maintained also on a drinking solution containing lead acetate. The data presented here, however, show that the extensive neural degeneration of the CNS occurs after T. canis infection and that the nature and extent of this degeneration is similar, regardless of whether mice had been administered parasites alone or in combination with lead. Thus the neuropathological d

Acute hyperammonemia in the young primate: physiologic and neuropathologic correlates.

Infusion-induced acute (less than or equal to 24 h) hyperammonemia to concentrations up to five times normal (0.19 +/- 0.03 versus 0.90 +/- 0.08 mM) was studied in eleven 6-9-month-old Macaca mulatta. The young primates developed a progressive reduction of consciousness that correlated in severity directly with the elevation of blood ammonia concentration. Hyperventilation, electroencephalographic slowing, occasional seizure activity, and, eventually, apneustic breathing also occurred. Intracranial pressure rose from 76 +/- 7 to 167 +/- 12 mmH2O. Arterial oxygen and blood pressure remained wit

Neuropathological features of a lupus-like disorder in autoimmune mice.

Neurological syndromes are prominent in systemic lupus erythematosus, but the neuropathological and mechanisms resulting in neurological dysfunction are unknown. We report a neuropathological study of the central nervous system in female NZB/W F1 mice, an animal model of systemic lupus erythematous. NZB/W mice were studied at 3, 5, 8, 12, and 14 months of age, and 36-month-old female C57B16N/NIA mice were studied as aged controls. A lymphoproliferative process was identified in the central nervous system of 39% of 8- to 12-month-old and all 14-month-old NZB/W mice. Infiltrates of lymphocytes a

Brain lesions in alcoholics. A neuropathological study with clinical correlations.

Among 8735 autopsies performed during a 5-year period at Ullevål Hospital in Oslo there were 70 cases of Wernicke's encephalopathy (0.8%) and 152 cases of alcoholic cerebellar atrophy (1.7%). Cerebellar atrophy was found in 26.8% of all examined alcoholics. Twenty-two of the cases with Wernicke's encephalopathy were active (acute and subacute) and 48 were inactive (chronic). Examination of the clinical records showed that stupor and coma were the dominating symptoms in active cases. A pure Korsakoff's psychosis with a selective memory defect was present in about one-third of the cases with ina

Paramedian thalamic and midbrain infarct: clinical and neuropathological study.

The clinical and neuropathological findings in 28 cases of paramedian thalamic and midbrain infarcts are reported. The 4 instances of unilateral paramedian thalamic infarct were characterized by mood and behavioral changes, limitation of the infarct to the center of the anatomical paramedian territory, and symmetrical configuration of the paramedian thalamic arteries. Basilar artery occlusion was found in 1 patient. The 5 cases of bilateral paramedian thalamic infarcts were characterized by disturbances of consciousness and behavior, extension of the infarct (to the mammillothalamic tracts in

The behavioral and neuropathologic sequelae of intoxication by trimethyltin compounds in the rat.

Trimethyltin, when given by gavage to rats, has an LD50 of 12.6 mg/kg. Signs of poisoning include tremors, hyperexcitability, aggressive behavior, weight loss, and convulsions. After single (10 mg/kg) or repeated weekly doses (a maximum of four) of 4 mg/kg, rats, up to a survival time of 70 days, were perfusion-fixed for light microscopy. Trimethyltin was assayed in brain and blood in rats after similar treatments. Trimethyltin is cumulative and persistent and binds with high affinity to hemoglobin. Trimethyltin, unlike triethyltin, does not produce white matter edema in rats but does cause bi

Juvenile neuroaxonal dystrophy: clinical, electrophysiological, and neuropathological features.

We describe 2 brothers with progressive myoclonus epilepsy that began in the second decade and was associated with cerebellar ataxia and intellectual deterioration. Electroencephalographic and cerebral evoked potential studies showed findings associated with myoclonus epilepsy. Neuropathological examination of 1 of the brothers, who died at age 23 years, revealed widespread changes of neuroaxonal dystrophy without pigment deposition in the basal ganglia. We propose the term juvenile neuroaxonal dystrophy (JNAD) to distinguish this condition on clinical grounds from infantile neuroaxonal dystro

Dementia in ageing mental defectives: a clinical and neuropathological study.

A follow-up clinical and neuropathological study of eleven mentally subnormal subjects diagnosed in life as suffering from either senile, cerebral arteriosclerotic or pre-senile dementia is reported. Of the original cohort seven have died and neuropathological examination has confirmed the diagnosis of cerebral arterisclerotic dementia in three, senile dementia in one and senile dementia of unusually early onset in another mongol patient. Autopsy was refused in one patient and in the other patient neuropathological examination revealed a diffuse sclerosis of Pelizaeus-Merzbacher type. In the f

Characteristic residual neuropathological features of Japanese B encephalitis.

Characteristic residual (12-67 years) neuropathological features of 4 verified or suspected cases of Japanese B encephalitis (JBE) are reported. These features are summarized as: 1. unique distribution pattern of the main lesions, i.e. combination of lesions in the thalamus, substantia nigra and Ammon's horn. Lesions in the thalamus consistently involved, in a linear fashion, lamina medullaris medialis with nucleus intralaminalis and adjacent portions of the nucleus lateralis thalami. Lesions in the substantia nigra usually occupied the middle parts of zona compacta. These lesions were usually

Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome: neuropathological and ophthalmological observations.

The case of a three-year-old boy with the Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome is reported. In addition to the constellation of skeletal and genital anomalies classically described in this syndrome, this patient had spontaneous opsoclonus-like eye movements, strabismus, lack of visual following responses and of opticokinetic reflexes. At autopsy the cerebellar vermis was found to be absent. There were retinal hemangiomas. Microscopical examinations showed loss of Purkinje cells and extensive neuronal degeneration within dentate nuclei, associated with patchy demyelination of cerebellar peduncles and cen

[Neuropathologic and toxicologic study of 12 cases of bismuth encephalopathy].

Examination of twelve cases of bismuth encephalopathy showed a constantand marked elevation of the bismuth levels in autopsy cerebral tissue (ranging from 2-8 mg/kg to 25 mg/kg). These values were found to be much higher than the last-measured Bismuth venous blood values. In every case, periveinular lymphocytic infiltration and abundant intra-cytoplasmic lipofuscin were seen. The microanalysis with Castaing's electrode revealed the presence of focal areas of bismuth in the leptomeningeal spaces. The significance of the lesions is not fully established and it will undergo further investigations

Cyanide intoxication in Macaca mulatta. Physiological and neuropathological aspects.

Sodium cyanide was infused intravenously in 11 lightly anaesthetised and spontaneously breathing M. mulatta. In most, the EEG, ECG, respiratory rate, blood pressure, cerebral venous sinus pressure, end-tidal pCO2 and body temperature were recorded. Blood gases, pH, lactate and pyruvate were estimated in arterial and venous sinus blood samples. There was an initial hyperventilation with tetany in all animals. A rapid rate of cyanide infusion led to apnoea. An isoelectric or near-isoelectric EEG was usually precipitated by bradycardia often with additional hypotension. Neither epileptic seizures
