Even before the completion of his medical studies at the universities of Berlin, Munich, and Strasburg, as well as his M.D.-graduation - in 1884 - under Friedrich Goltz (1834-1902), experimental biologist Jacques Loeb (1859-1924) became interested in degenerative and regenerative problems of brain anatomy and general problems of neurophysiology. It can be supposed that he addressed these questions out of a growing dissatisfaction with leading perceptions about cerebral localization, as they had been advocated by the Berlin experimental neurophysiologists at the time. Instead, he followed Goltz…

Emotions color in a singular way our everyday life and constitute important determinants of human cognition and behavior. Emotional regulation is an essential process involved in neuropathophysiology and therapeutic efficacy in many psychiatric disorders. Yet, traditional psychiatric therapeutic has focused on symptomatic rather than neurophysiological criteria. Therefore, it was proposed to teach patients to modify their own brain activity directly, in order to obtain a therapeutic effect. These techniques, which are named neurofeedback, were originally developed using electroencephalography.

The goal of this report is to review all aspects of sleepwalking (SW), also known as somnambulism. Various factors seem to initiate SW, especially drugs, stress, and sleep deprivation. As an etiology, heredity is important, but other conditions include thyrotoxicosis, stress, and herpes simplex encephalitis. Psychological characteristics of sleepwalkers often include aggression, anxiety, panic disorder, and hysteria. Polysomnographic characteristics emphasize abnormal deep sleep associated with arousal and slow wave sleep fragmentation. In the differential diagnosis, the EEG is important to pr

This paper challenges a dominant narrative of interdisciplinary fusion in the emergence of neuroscience through revisiting the mid-century encounter between cybernetics and neurophysiology. Focusing on the fraught collaboration between neurophysiologist Mary Brazier and cyberneticist Walter Rosenblith, it traces how the computer's dual status as metaphor and tool produced tension rather than synthesis. Drawing on archival correspondence and conference records, the paper argues that experimental neurophysiologists resisted cybernetics' metaphors, insisting instead on embodied practice. Ultimate…

Pitvipers have four 'eyes': two visual eyes and two flask-shaped facial pits resembling a pinhole camera that images environmental surface temperatures using thermal radiation. Pit apertures define the sharpness and brightness of the thermal image, and vary substantially among species, suggesting adaptation to specific habitats. Thermal radiation enters the facial pit through its external aperture and heats a suspended membrane covered with thousands of temperature sensors that are sensitive to minute changes. Sensor responses are preprocessed and mapped onto the tectum, where vision, sound an

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a widely accepted therapy in patients with chronic intractable neuropathic pain in the trunk and limbs. However, open-loop (OL) SCS systems, which rely on fixed stimulation parameters and subjective feedback, face limitations in delivering consistent neural activation and durable pain relief. Anatomical and physiological characteristics of the cervical spinal cord, such as decreased cerebrospinal fluid thickness and increased mobility, exacerbate these challenges. Limited evidence exists on differences in cervical and thoracic neurophysiology, and…

INTRODUCTION: Brain fog and cognitive dysfunction are frequently reported in post-viral fatigue syndromes such as long COVID, yet these symptoms remain challenging to quantify objectively. Notably, many individuals with long COVID describe clinical features that overlap with those observed in patients with persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS), including cognitive fatigue, exertional intolerance, mood disturbances, visual and balance problems, headaches, and neck pain. Emerging evidence suggests that PPCS is associated with distinct electrophysiological abnormalities, including altered fu

BACKGROUND: Neuroscience researchers often surgically implant hardware into model organisms to measure and manipulate neural activity. Designing and optimizing these procedures in non-human primates often requires sedated or euthanized animals. Artificial tissue technologies can reduce animal use in this process, but existing simulators do not include all relevant tissues and do not facilitate iterative design processes.
NEW METHOD: We created a comprehensive, customizable, and modular surgical simulator for neuroscience research. Our simulator incorporates artificial skull, brain, and soft t

This article explores the assimilation of the law of energy conservation in the psychological sciences of the late nineteenth century by comparing two similar neurophysiological projects conceived in largely the same social milieu and at the same time - namely, Sigmund Exner's Project for a physiological explanation of psychic phenomena (1894) and Josef Breuer's "Theoretical" chapter for Studies on Hysteria (1895). As shall be demonstrated, even within the narrow context of fin-de siècle Viennese neurophysiology, energetic concepts were used in apparently similar models, but defending widely d…

A 3-hour hands-on EEG workshop was conducted as a part of resident rotation in clinical neurophysiology to determine its feasibility and educational value for neurology residents, medical students, and EEG technologists, with the learning objectives of motivating interest in clinical electroencephalography, enhancing ability to recognize a normal EEG and identify physiological and non-physiological artifacts, and enhancing teaching, organizational and communication skills of EEG technologists. The workshop included a demonstration of EEG electrode placement according to the 10-20 System on a r…

The differential diagnosis of patients with Disorder of Consciousness (DoC), in particular in the chronic phase, is significantly difficult. Actually, about 40% of patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) and the minimally conscious state (MCS) are misdiagnosed. Indeed, only advanced paraclinical approaches, including advanced EEG analyses, can allow achieving a more reliable diagnosis, that is, discovering residual traces of awareness in patients with UWS (namely, functional Locked-In Syndrome (fLIS)). These approaches aim at capturing the residual brain network models, at rest o

PurposeDiffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has shown promise in the measurement of peripheral nerve integrity, although the optimal way to apply the technique for the study of lumbar spinal nerves is unclear. The aims of this study are to use an improved DTI acquisition to investigate lumbar nerve root integrity and correlate this with functional measures using neurophysiology.MethodsTwenty healthy volunteers underwent 3 T DTI of the L5/S1 area. Regions of interest were applied to L5 and S1 nerve roots, and DTI metrics (fractional anisotropy, mean, axial and radial diffusivity) were derived. Neurop…

INTRODUCTION: Attention is the process that provides us with the capacity to select perceptions or internal representations for conscious processing and action. Given that episodic memory is where our personal experiences are stored together with the context they take place in, it has been observed that disturbances affecting attention, whether they are due to neurological disorders or experimental manipulation, deteriorate the storage of episodic information.
AIMS: The aim of this study is to explain, from a neurophysiological perspective, how the processes of attention and memory interact w

The purpose of the present review is to assess the evidence published in scientific literature that industrial organic solvents as a generic group have the ability to induce long-term nervous system damage in workers that can be detected by techniques other than neuropsychological testing. The main body of evidence considered in this review was 40 studies involving the use of brain imaging, neurophysiological testing, gross autopsy or histopathology in groups of workers with long-term solvent exposure. Case reports involving both solvent abuse and occupational exposure, and experimental animal

The chronic electrical stimulation of a motor cortical area corresponding to a painful region of the body, by means of surgically-implanted epidural electrodes is a validated therapeutical strategy to control medication-resistant neurogenic pain. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) permits to stimulate non-invasively and precisely the motor cortex. We applied a 20-min session of rTMS of the motor cortex at 10 Hz using a 'real' or a 'sham' coil in a series of 14 patients with intractable pain due to thalamic stroke or trigeminal neuropathy. We studied the effects of rTMS on pain

Background: Sleep deprivation is one of the major public health and performance risk factors, with documented effects on vigilance, executive function, emotional regulation, and safety-critical behaviour. This review examines how event-related potentials (ERPs)-which provide millisecond-level resolution of cognitive processing stages-can clarify which neural processes are most affected by sleep loss, from early sensory encoding to later evaluative and control-related stages. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted as a systematic review of human studies on sleep deprivation and ERPs. E

INTRODUCTION: We recently showed that prolonged anorectal motor-evoked potential (MEP) latencies are associated with impaired anorectal function in women with fecal incontinence. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and translumbosacral magnetic stimulation (rTLSMS) are emerging neuromodulatory treatments, yet optimal frequency and site parameters remain undefined. This study evaluated the acute neurophysiological effects of rTMS and rTLSMS in healthy volunteers.
METHODS: In a randomized crossover study, ten healthy women (18-35 years) underwent TMS and TLSMS assessments measur

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cannabis use in the US has increased within the past two decades. Moreover, cannabis use disorder (CUD) is associated with significant disability, but the underlying neural mechanisms of CUD are unclear. Distress intolerance (DI), a psychological risk factor for CUD, may confer risk in part via impaired inhibitory control (IC) capacity during acute stress. DI and cannabis use problems have been associated with altered N2 amplitude, an IC-related event-related potential, in prior cross-sectional studies, but whether altered N2 is a state marker of CUD severity, a p

Performing a goal-directed movement consists of a chain of complex preparatory mechanisms. Such planning especially requires integration (or binding) of various action features, a process that has been conceptualized in the "theory of event coding." Theoretical considerations and empirical research suggest that these processes are subject to developmental effects from adolescence to adulthood. The aim of the present study was to investigate age-related modulations in action feature binding processes and to shed light on underlying neurophysiological development from preadolescence to early adu
