The majority of rabies virus (RV) infections are caused by bites or scratches from rabid carnivores or bats. Usually, RV utilizes the retrograde transport within the neuronal network to spread from the infection site to the central nervous system (CNS) where it replicates in neuronal somata and infects other neurons via trans-synaptic spread. We speculate that in addition to the neuronal transport of the virus, hematogenous spread from the site of infection directly to the brain after accidental spill over into the vascular system might represent an alternative way for RV to invade the CNS. So

Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups, eight rats per group. Animals were hypophysectomized with removal of both the pars distalis and the neural lobe of the neurohypophysis. Groups of eight rats were euthanized 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks following hypophysectomy and prepared for routine scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and correlative immunoelectron microscopy employing antisera against arginine vasopressin (AVP). Eight normal rats served as controls. In experimental rats that survived one to eight weeks posthypophysectomy, remarkable neuroanatomical alterations were notable

UNLABELLED: Neuropeptides (NPs) and their cognate receptors are critical effectors of diverse physiological processes and behaviors. We recently reported of a non-canonical function of the Drosophila Glucose-6-Phosphatase ( G6P ) gene in a subset of neurosecretory cells in the CNS that governs systemic glucose homeostasis in food deprived flies. Here, we show that G6P expressing neurons define 6 groups of neuropeptide secreting cells, 4 in the brain and 2 in the thoracic ganglion. Using the glucose homeostasis phenotype as a screening tool, we find that neurons located in the thoracic ganglion

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a stressful period where important biological, psychological and social changes occur. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable during this developmental period and can use various strategies to deal with daily stress, such as substance use or externalizing behaviors. In previous studies, stress in adolescents with externalizing behaviors was often linked to ineffective cognitive coping strategies (i.e., constructive thinking) and overlooking the biological aspects involved in stress management such as neuroendocrine regulation. Indeed, repeated activation of the hypo

CONTEXT: McCune Albright syndrome (MAS) is a clinical association of endocrine and nonendocrine anomalies caused by postzygotic mutation of the GNAS1 gene, leading to somatic activation of the stimulatory α-subunit of G protein (Gsα). Important advances have been made recently in describing pathological characteristics of many MAS-affected tissues, particularly pituitary, testicular, and adrenal disease. Other rarer disease related features are emerging.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the investigation was to study the pathological and genetic findings of MAS on a tissue-by-tissue basis in class

Acute stressors induce changes in numerous behavioral parameters through activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Several important hormones in paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) play the roles in these stress-induced reactions. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and corticosterone are considered as molecular markers for stress-induced grooming behavior. Oxytocin in PVN is an essential modulator for stress-induced antinociception. The clock gene, Per1, has been identified as an effecter response to the acute stresses, but its fu

Anxiety disorders are highly comorbid with each other and with major depressive disorder. As syndromes, anxiety and mood disorders share many symptoms, and several treatments are effective for both. Despite this overlap, there exist many distinguishing features that support the continued classification of individual anxiety disorders that are distinct from each other and from major depression. The goal of this article is to describe the key biological similarities and differences between anxiety disorders.

In order to evaluate the effects of some neuro-endocrine changes during aging we have studied adrenal, thyroid and pineal secretion in young, healthy old and centenarians. The number of subjects in each hormone group varied. The following parameters were evaluated: serum levels of cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEAS), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroxine (FT4), reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Urinary 6-hydroxymelatonin sulfate (aMT6s) and free cortisol were measured twice daily. Centenarians exhibited significantly lower TSH levels together w

AIMS AND METHODS: The prevalence and distribution of neuroendocrine differentiation in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was estimated by assays for synaptophysin (SYN), chromogranin A (CgA), Leu7 and neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Serum NSE and CgA were determined in parallel to find the values of these markers for distinguishing neuroendocrine differentiation in NSCLC. Fifty-eight resected NSCLC specimens and 34 sera of NSCLC patients entered the study. Neuroendocrine differentiation was graded according to the percentage of neuroendocrine tumor cells as NE0--0%, NE1-NE4--1%->76%. Serum NSE

Normal brain maturational and developmental processes, together with plastic reorganization of the brain in response to experiential demands, contribute to the acquisition of improved capacities for self-regulation and impulse control during adolescence. The frontal lobe is a main focus for these developmental and plastic processes during the transition from adolescence into adulthood. Tourette syndrome (TS), defined as the chronic presence of motor and vocal tics, has been increasingly conceptualized as a disorder of impaired self-regulatory control. This disordered control is thought to give

Objective measures of experimentally-induced aggressiveness were evaluated in 20 methadone-treated heroin addicts, in comparison to 20 normal healthy male subjects. All the subjects were submitted to preliminary DSM IV interviews, Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI II). During a laboratory task, the point subtraction aggression paradigm (PSAP), subjects earned monetary reinforcers with repeated button presses, and were provoked by the subtraction of money, which was attributed to a fictitious other participants. Subjects could respond b

During the past century of research on the thymus, the fact that every mammalian thymus undergoes marked morphological changes during the complex process of aging has been defined as a basic histogenetical rule. In characterizing the physiological (i.e. chronic) involution of the mammalian thymus, the term "Altersinvolution" referring to age-related involution is used. All other types of thymic involution are associated with an initial trigger and a relatively "acute" mechanism. In all of these factor-dependent cases of thymic involution, we use the term "akzidentelle Involution" (i.e. acute a

Male rats exposed to sexually receptive females, exhibit a rapid increase in plasma levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin, and concomitant increases in noradrenergic activity in the medial basal hypothalamus (MBH) and median eminence (ME) as well as in dopaminergic activity in the MBH. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC; 5 mg/kg b.wt., PO), the chief psychoactive constituent of marijuana, blocked the MBH and ME noradrenergic response and the dopaminergic response in the MBH in male rats exposed for 20 min to sexually receptive females, and suppressed the expected increases in plasma

Studies using push-pull perfusion of the stalk-median eminence (S-ME) in ovariectomized adult monkeys indicate that input of neuropeptide Y (NPY) neurons is an important modulator for the pulsatility of LHRH release: (1) NPY release in the S-ME was pulsatile; (2) NPY pulses occurred coupled to LHRH pulses, with NPY pulses preceding LHRH pulses; and (3) infusion of NPY into the S-ME stimulated LHRH release in a dose-responsive manner; whereas (4) infusion of a specific antiserum to NPY into the S-ME suppressed LHRH pulses. Further studies suggest that NPY neurons may mediate the action of stero

Radioautography of [(3)H]GABA accumulation and immunocytochemistry of glutamate decarboxylase have been used to study anatomically and morphologically the GABA system of the rat habenular (Hb) complex. Radioautographic visualisation of GABA specific neurons show a very high innervation of the complex including both stria medullaris (SM), the habenular commissure and the periventricular thalamic fibers (FPVT). A massive labeled fiber system in the SM appears to divide into two branches when it reaches the Hb nuclei: a part of fibers continue their course dorsally to the nuclei up to the habenul

Leptinotoxin-h (LPTx), a neurotoxin (otherwise designated beta-leptinotarsin-h) known to stimulate the release of neurotransmitters from synapses, was purified from the hemolymph of the potato beetle, Leptinotarsa haldemani, by a simplification of the procedure originally developed by Crosland et al. [Biochemistry 23, 734-741, (1984)]. Highly and partially purified preparations of the toxin were applied to guinea pig synaptosomes and neurosecretory (PC12) cells. When applied in a Ca2+-containing Ringer medium, at concentrations in the 10(-11) - 10(-10) M range, the toxin induced: (a) rapid dep

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is increasingly recognized as a systemic condition with neuroinflammatory and psychobiological implications, yet its integrated relationship with inflammatory and neuroendocrine pathways in mental health remains insufficiently characterized. We investigated the associations between obesity, circulating biomarkers, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 251 adults were stratified according to psychiatric diagnosis and body mass index (BMI). Inflammatory, neuroendocrine, and metabolic

The protein tyrosine phosphatase receptors N and N2 are encoded by the Ptprn and Ptprn2 genes expressed in neuroendocrine cells of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and diffuse neuroendocrine system, including the pancreas, lung, and intestine. Unlike other members of the protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor family, PTPRN and PTPRN2 lack protein tyrosine phosphatase activity due to mutation of two residues in their intracellular catalytic domains. However, during evolution these proteins acquired new cellular roles beyond tyrosine dephosphorylation in the centralized and diffuse neuroendocri

Post-exercise hot (HWI) and cold (CWI) water immersion are popular strategies used by athletes in a range of sporting contexts, such as enhancing recovery or adaptation. However, prolonged heating bouts increase neuroendocrine responses that are associated with perceptions of fatigue. Fourteen endurance-trained runners performed three trials consisting of two 45-min runs at 95% lactate threshold on a treadmill separated by 6 h of recovery. Following the first run, participants completed one of HWI (30 min, 40°C), CWI (15 min, 14°C) or control (CON, 30 min rest in ambient conditions) in a rando
