Psychiatric illness among the mildly mentally retarded.

The relationship between mental retardation and psychiatric disturbance was studied by comparing the mentally retarded in the age group 20-60 years with matched controls. The mildly retarded showed a higher degree of neuroticism but did not differ significantly from persons of higher intelligence in the frequency of mental illnesses. By contrast the severely retarded showed an increased mental morbidity, mainly in the form of chronic psychoorganic syndromes, as compared with both the mildly retarded and controls.

A Traitlike Dimension of Subjective Memory Concern Over 30 Years Among Adult Male Twins.

IMPORTANCE: Subjective memory concern has long been considered a state-related indicator of impending cognitive decline or dementia. Personality Traits, Affective Distress, and Addictive Behaviors in Patients with Neurotic Disorders: A Mediation Analysis.

This study investigated an integrative mediation model examining whether anxiety and depression mediate the relationship between the Big Fiv … cotine dependence and 27.1 in alcohol dependence. Results revealed a pattern of complete mediation: neuroticism had no direct effect on addiction but influenced alcohol dependence exclusively through anxiety (p = 0.001) and nicotine dependence through depressive symptoms (p = 0.012). Extraversion and agreeableness showed a dual role, exerting significant dire …

Alterations of Cortical Thickness in High Suicidality Patients with Panic Disorder and Their Relationship with Symptomatology and Treatment Response.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with panic disorder (PD) are approximately four times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts and attempts compared to healthy controls (HCs). Despite the elevated risk compared to HCs, the relationship between cortical thickness (CT) in PD and suicidality remains underexplored. METHODS: We recruited 161 right-handed participants, including 82 PD patients and 79 HCs, and assessed them using a comprehensive battery of psychological scales, including the Scale for Suicidal Ideation (SSI), Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form, Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness Pe…

Mental load in women and mothers: Causes of distress, personality traits, and psychopathology.

Mental load has received increasing public attention, particularly following societal changes such as the COVID-19 pandemic and shifts towar … y 2 (N = 1891 mothers; M = 38.18 years, SD = 5.18) showed that mental load is positively related to neuroticism and conscientiousness, with the association of mental load and neuroticism moderated by being a single mother. Practical implications at the individual, couple, and societal levels are derived from these findings.

Association of negative affect with resting heart rate variability in medical students.

Resting heart rate variability (HRV) reflects rhythmic changes in heart rate over time associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) activi … elated medications. HRV was measured for 5 min in the supine position. Predictor variables included neuroticism (NEO-FFI), perceived stress over the past month (PSS-10), state anxiety (STAI-X1). Covariates included sex, age, BMI, allergy, physical activity, sleep quality, respiration rate. Dependent variables included logarithmically transformed (ln) HRV para …

Understanding the distressed prostate cancer patient: Role of personality.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between personality and emotional distress in prostate cancer. Neuroticism and introversion were hypothesized to be associated with clinically significant symptoms of emotional distress, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. METHODS: Men with a history of prostate cancer (n = 212) completed an NIH-funded cross-sectional study using well-validated measures of personality, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. [Does the French Big Five Inventory evaluate facets other than the Big Five factors?].

INTRODUCTION: The Big Five Inventory (BFI) developed by John et al. (1991) is one of the most widely accepted tools for assessing dimensions of personality. It comprises 44 items that assess five broad dimensions of personality (the Big Five Factors): Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism and Openness to experience. Based on correlations with the facets described in the NEO Personality Inventory Revised (NEO PI-R), another Big Five assessment tool with 240 items and 6 facets per dimension, Soto and John (2009) showed that the dimensions in the BFI could be divided into tw…

A controlled study of psychological and social change after surgical gender reassignment in selected male transsexuals.

Of two groups of 20 patients accepted for gender reassignment surgery, one was offered early operation and therefore had had surgery by follow-up two years later, while the second was still awaiting operation at two-year follow-up. Although the groups were similar initially, significant differences between them emerged at follow-up in terms of neuroticism and social and sexual activity, with benefits being enjoyed by the operated group.

Psychological treatment of slot-machine pathological gambling: new perspectives.

In this paper the most relevant findings of our research team on pathological gambling in the last decade are presented. There is no conclusive empirical evidence of a specific profile of the pathological gamblers. The choice treatment appears to be stimulus control and in vivo exposure with response prevention, followed by a cognitive-behavioral intervention in relapse prevention. Predictive variables for the therapeutic failure were the dissatisfaction with the treatment, the alcohol abuse and the neuroticism as a personality variable. Unanswered questions for future research in this field a…

Body concept, disability, and depression in patients with spasmodic torticollis.

Eighty-five patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis were compared with an equally chronic group of 49 cervical spondylosis sufferers in terms of body concept, depression, and disability. The torticollis patients were significantly more depressed and disabled and had a more negative body concept. Depression had different determinants in the two groups. Extent of disfigurement was a major predictor of depression in torticollis. Neuroticism accounted for the greatest proportion of the variance of depression in cervical spondylosis.

The effects of hyperventilation; individual variability and its relation to personality.

Self-reported affective and somatic disturbances and heart rate changes resulting from a brief period of voluntary hyperventilation are presented and related to individuals' Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (E.P.Q.) scores. Considerable individual variability was observed in the effects of hyperventilation. Neuroticism was significantly correlated with affective but not self-reported somatic or objectively measured heart rate changes. Other possible determinants of observed variability and its possible relevance to the etiology of panic attacks are discussed.

How ambient temperature affects mood: an ecological momentary assessment study in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has suggested that an increase in temperature can negatively affect mental health and increase hospitalization for mental illness. It is not clear, however, what factors or mechanisms mediate this association. We aimed to (1) investigate the associations between ambient temperatures and bad daily mood, and (2) identify variables affecting the strength of these associations (modifiers) including the time, the day of the week and the year of the mood rating, socio-demographic characteristics, sleep quality, psychiatric disorders and the personality trait neuroticism i…
