A 26-year-old man with a history of an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma arising from the urachus and a large, right-sided, epidermal nevus presented with a rapidly evolving tetraparesis. Investigations confirmed an intramedullary hemorrhage of the cervical spinal cord and an extensive arteriovenous malformation (AVM). An association between his nevus, rhabdomyosarcoma, and spinal AVM is hypothesized.

BACKGROUND: Nevus depigmentosus is defined as a congenital nonprogressive hypopigmented macule or patch that is stable in its relative size and distribution throughout life. The pathogenesis and histopathologic characteristics of nevus depigmentosus is not yet fully established.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of nevus depigmentosus as well as its pathogenesis.
METHODS: A clinical survey was done with 67 patients diagnosed as having nevus depigmentosus. Two skin biopsy specimens each were taken from 18 patients: one fro…

Linear nevus sebaceous syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome in which associated radiographic findings of the peripheral skeletal system are uncommon. We report a follow-up study of a patient with mainly unilateral changes of the skeletal system involving the thorax and the right arm and leg.

BACKGROUND: Malignant cellular blue nevus (MCBN) is a rare entity due to the malignant transformation of a preexisting cellular blue nevus (CBN).
OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The clinical and pathologic features of 6 patients with MCBN are described.
RESULTS: Three tumors were located on the scalp, 2 on the trunk and 1 on the neck. The lesions, present from birth or childhood, had enlarged rapidly in the last months before excision. Histologically, there was a dermal proliferation of spindle and epithelioid atypical melanocytic cells. Some of them were heavily pigmented. Numerous atypical mitoses …

Multiple pigmented lesions including benign lentigines, typical nevi, and dysplastic nevi from 3 patients with the dysplastic nevus syndrome contained giant melanosomes (GM). Ultrastructurally the GM were composed of microvesicles, but lacked limiting membrane and filamentous internal structure. As such, they resembled the GM found in 4 other patients with dysplastic nevus syndrome, leopard syndrome and ocular albinism, but differed from those found in the café-au-lait spots of neurofibromatosis, nevus spilus, vitiliginous achromia, and certain animals.

A 48-year-old woman with poikiloderma atrophicans vasculare was treated with topical mechlorethamine, applied three times weekly, for eight years. After five years treatment she developed nine melanocytic naevi on covered skin. The naevi spread for the next three years and a surgical excision was performed. Pathological examination revealed one level II SSM, one level I SSM and seven junctional naevi with focal dysplasia or melanocytic hyperplasia. The development of melanoma and dysplastic naevi after topical mechlorethamine has not been previously reported. However it seems likely that mechl

BACKGROUND: Acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (Hori's nevus) is a dermal pigmented lesion commonly seen in middle-aged women of Asian descent. The Q-switched ruby laser (QSRL) has been used successfully to treat a variety of benign pigmented lesions. Multiple, sequential treatments are typically required for complete clearance of the dermal pigmented dermatoses.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of QSRL in the treatment of Hori's nevus and the beneficial effect of epidermal ablation using the scanned carbon dioxide (CO(2)) laser before QSRL.

INTRODUCTION: PReferentially expressed Antigen in MElanoma (PRAME) has shown utility in differentiating benign from malignant melanocytic neoplasms. In this study, we investigated the clinical significance of PRAME expression in dysplastic nevi (DN) and nevus-associated melanoma in situ (MIS).
METHODS: We included 172 DN and 38 nevus-associated MIS from our institutional archive. PRAME positive expression was defined as nuclear staining in at least 75% of melanocytes. In addition, relevant studies from PubMed and Web of Science were incorporated into a meta-analysis using the random-effects m…

(1) Background: Nevus-associated cutaneous melanoma (CM) is relatively common in the clinical practice of dermatopathologists. The correct diagnosis and staging of nevus-associated cutaneous melanoma (CM) mainly relies on the correct discrimination between benign and malignant cells. Recently, PRAME has emerged as a promising immunohistochemical marker of malignant melanocytes. (2) Methods: PRAME immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed in 69 cases of nevus-associated CMs. Its expression was evaluated using a score ranging from 0 to 4+ based on the percentage of melanocytic cells with a nuclea…

Pigmented hairy epidermal nevus, also known as Becker's nevus, has a typical description as a unilateral, hairy in appearance, light to dark brown patch with an irregular but clearly defined border. However, the exact aetiopathogenesis is still poorly comprehended. We report the case of a 19-year-old female who presented with asymptomatic brownish-pigmented macular lesions on the right breast that had slowly increased in size over the past three years. Upon cutaneous inspection, the right breast had 3-5 mm rounded and oval perifollicular macules that ranged from light to dark brown hue without…

Nevus of Ota or congenital oculodermal melanosis (ODM) is characterized by brown or blue/gray asymptomatic brown or blue/gray flat lesions of the skin, mucosae, episcleral/sclera, and uvea, which are located near the trigeminal nerve's ophthalmic and mandibular branches. The main ophthalmic complications are glaucoma and predisposition to uveal melanoma. "trichilemmal cyst" is also known as "wen" "pilar cyst" or " isthmus catagen cyst". It occurs in the scalp and mimics sebaceous cysts clinically. The swelling appears smooth in outline and is filled with cytokeratin. An unusual case of a 32-ye…

Kissing nevus is a congenital melanocytic neoplasm arising in those parts of the body that split at some point during embryological development (i.e., eyelid; penis), resulting in two adjacent melanocytic nevi. To date, 23 cases of kissing nevus of the penis have been described, and dermatoscopic and histological findings are available in 4/23 cases. We report a dermatoscopic, histological and confocal microscopic analysis in a new case of the kissing nevus of the penis in a 57 years old man. Dermatoscopic analysis showed large globules in the central area and a peripheral pigment network; the…

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare syndrome characterized by asymmetric limb overgrowth, vascular malformation, and hamartomas. In this study we report a case of PS in a 13-year-old girl with chief complaint of a new cutaneous lesion that was diagnosed and treated as leishmaniasis.
