Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) is a rare congenital naevoid syndrome; most case reports originate in Japan. The major clinical manifestations consist of coexisting extensive naevus flammeus and pigmentary naevus with or without systemic involvement. We report an 8-year-old Taiwanese boy, who was born with extensive naevus flammeus and other anomalies comprising persistent aberrant Mongolian spot-like pigmentary patches, leg-length discrepancy, pelvic obliquity, scoliosis and bilateral melanosis oculi bulbi. Further investigation also revealed agenesis of the right kidney. The cutaneous

The incidence of halo naevi in the population has been estimated to be 1%. We now report the simultaneous occurrence of such naevi in four members of a family previously resident in New Zealand.

There is a wide morphological variety in the appearance of melanocytic nevi. We report a case of a 77-year-old woman with a pedunculated, lobulated intradermal nevus on her trunk. For this grape-like clinical variant, we propose the term "corymbiform nevus".

We report a case of accessory mammary tissue of type 2a (or polythelia) entirely localized within a Becker's naevus of mixed type in a 32-year-old Caucasian woman. Polythelia was congenital in origin while Becker's naevus appeared during puberty. Renal ultrasonographic studies, laboratory examinations and other instrumental investigations were either normal or negative. Although the association of accessory mammary tissue with Becker's naevus has previously been reported--also in the form of mammorenal and acromammorenal syndromes--this is the first case characterized by an anatomic overlap be

Supernumerary nipples, also known as accessory nipples, are the most frequently encountered congenital anomaly of the breast. Once associated with fertility or divine powers, they are now widely held to be of cosmetic significance only. During the past 20 years, however, there has been a steady number of articles reporting the suspected association of supernumerary nipples with numerous benign and malignant medical conditions. We describe a previously unreported accessory nipple variant occurring as a nevoid nodule surmounting an otherwise normal primary nipple. The patient was otherwise healt

Becker's nevus is a unilateral, hyperpigmented cutaneous hamartoma usually with hypertrichosis. It occurs predominantly in boys, becoming apparent during adolescence, although several cases of congenital Becker's nevus have been reported. Rarely it may be familial and as such is transmitted in an autosomal dominant pattern. We report a 16-month-old black boy with a hyperpigmented patch on his right shoulder and upper pectoral area that extended down his arm. The patient's father has a similar lesion with hair on his left shoulder which has been present since childhood. Histology of the child's

It is recognized that cells of melanocytic naevi may resemble neuroid structures and the term neurotization has been used to describe this phenomenon. This may result in difficulty in the histological differentiation between naevi and neurofibromas. We report the case of a patient with a giant bathing trunk naevus which has undergone marked neurotization and in whom there had been diagnostic difficulty.

An 11-month-old girl with a large "swimming-suit" neavus whose head began to enlarge at the age of 3 months was subdued to sonographic and computer tomographic examinations. The latter revealed a complete obstructive hydrocephalus of all brain ventricles. The section and histologic examinations indicated that the obstruction was caused by extensive melanocytosis of leptomeninges at the cerebellar base, pons and spinal cord thus blocking out the outlets of the IVth brain ventricle. (Fig. 8, Ref. 8.).

Dermatoscopy is a non-invasive investigative technique which makes it possible to evaluate the pigmented structures of the epidermis, the dermo-epidermal junction and the papillary dermal layer. The melanin pigmentation of the epidermal basal cell layers, the so-called pigment network is the primary target of dermatoscopy. A number of diagnostic criteria and variables for the dermatoscopy of pigmented skin lesions have been developed. Cutaneous malignant melanoma is still increasing in incidence and mortality. An early diagnosis is decisive for the prognosis. Therefore, it is urgent to develop

A case of malignant melanoma in a medium-sized congenital naevus in a prepubertal girl is presented. Risk factors for developing melanoma during childhood include giant congenital naevi, dysplastic naevus syndrome and xeroderma pigmentosum. The lifetime risk of melanoma associated with giant congenital naevi has been estimated to be 4%-20%; the risk associated with small and medium-sized congenital naevi however remains controversial. In the latter lesions, malignant transformation is considered an almost exclusively postpubertal phenomenon, in contrast to giant congenital naevi where it often

Epidermal nevus syndrome is defined as a combination of nevoid skin alterations, epileptic seizures, and psychomotoric retardation. Involvement of other organs, especially the eyes, may also occur, but is not obligatory. The present report is concerned with a case that combined regional odontodysplasia with nevoid skin alterations in the overlying skin area of the face. This observation suggests that odontodysplasia may be the result of aberrations in the development and migration of cells of the neural crest occurring early in embryonic life.

A patient with erythema multiforme developed many nevocytic nevi, including a large cluster of such lesions at the sites of healed blisters. The development of eruptive nevocytic nevi in this pattern suggests that cutaneous injury plays a role in their pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: PRAME (PReferentially expressed Antigen in MElanoma) is a tumor-associated antigen that has been studied in various cutaneous melanocytic lesions. p16, on the other hand, has been proposed to aid in distinguishing between benign and malignant melanocytic neoplasms. Studies on the diagnostic utility of PRAME and p16 in combination in differentiating nevi from melanoma are limited. We aimed to assess the diagnostic utility of PRAME and p16 in melanocytic tumors and their role in distinguishing between malignant melanomas and melanocytic nevi.
METHODS: This is a single-center retrosp

Common moles on the skin, known scientifically as melanocytic nevi, are seen frequently in the pediatric population. They are broadly grouped into two groups: congenital (generally present at birth or in infancy) or acquired. Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are classified based on size and morphologic features. Neurocutaneous melanosis and melanoma represent two important complications, with overall risk affected by nevus size, location, appearance, and number of satellite lesions. Regular lifelong skin surveillance is required for high-risk CMN. Acquired melanocytic nevi (AMN) tend to appea

Advances in laser research and technology have led to expanded laser applications for the treatment of dermatologic disease. Lasers are viable treatment modalities for patients of any age group and offer unique treatment options for both adult and pediatric patients. While many skin diseases can be treated similarly in children and adults, differences in treatment approaches can result from varying anxiety levels, pain tolerance, psychosocial considerations of untreated disease, determination of suitable anesthesia, the use of size-appropriate safety equipment, and differences in the evolution

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is an autosomal dominant disorder that primarily affects the development and growth of neural cell tissues. It causes tumors to grow on nerves and produces other abnormalities such as skin changes and bone deformities. Dysplastic nevus syndrome (DNS) represents multiple atypical nevi associated with polygenetic inheritance pattern and may rarely occur together with NF-1. DNS type A is a marker of increased melanoma risk, while melanoma has been rarely reported in patients with NF-1. We describe a case of NF-1 type A with DNS presenting with multiple neural tumor

A total of 2,455 conjunctival lesions in adults (over 15 years old) obtained during a 61-year period were reviewed and histopathologically classified as congenital, acquired epithelial, acquired subepithelial, pigmented, inflammatory/degenerative, and miscellaneous. The most common lesions in decreasing order of frequency were: pterygium, nevus, dysplasia, nonspecific nongranulomatous inflammation, and epithelial inclusion cyst. The most common conjunctival malignancy in adults was squamous cell carcinoma, followed by melanoma, and pagetoid change associated with sebaceous gland carcinoma. Squ
