Carbon-negative wastewater treatment via CO2-to-acetate microbial electrosynthesis coupled with biological nitrogen removal.

This study presents a renewable electricity-driven microbial electrosynthesis (MES) system integrated with biological nitrogen removal (BNR) to achieve carbon-negative wastewater treatment. The MES system converts CO₂ into acetate, which is directly utilized as an internal carbon source for denitrification. Incorporation of biochar-derived conductive materials enhanced electron transfer, increasing acetate productivity to 1.98 g/L·d with a Coulombic efficiency of 75 %. Coupling MES with BNR achieved a TN removal efficiency exceeding 97 %, while maintaining system stability during intermittent

Adaptive Photochemical Amination via Co(II) Catalysis.

Transition-metal-catalyzed amination of aryl halides is one of the most employed methods for constructing N-arylation adducts. However, the broad success of these reactions largely relies on the screening of precatalysts, elaborated ligands, and case-by-case optimization of reaction conditions (solvent, base, additive, temperature, etc.) for electronically or structurally diverse nucleophiles. Herein, we report an adaptive photochemical C-N coupling of aryl halides with various nitrogen nucleophiles (aliphatic and aromatic amines, amides, sulfonamides, pyrazoles, and ammonium salts) by Co(II)

Redox Chemistry: Implications for Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

Reduction-oxidation (redox) chemistry plays a vital role in human homeostasis. These reactions play critical roles in energy generation, as part of innate immunity, and in the generation of secondary messengers with various functions such as cell cycle progression or the release of neurotransmitters. Despite this cornerstone role, if left unchecked, the body can overproduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) or reactive nitrogen species (RNS). When these overwhelm endogenous antioxidant systems, oxidative stress (OS) occurs. In neonates, OS has been associated with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP),

Mammal and tree diversity accumulate different types of soil organic matter in the northern Amazon.

Diversity of plants and animals influence soil carbon through their contributions to soil organic matter (SOM). However, we do not know whether mammal and tree communities affect SOM composition in the same manner. This question is relevant because not all forms of carbon are equally resistant to mineralization by microbes and thus, relevant to carbon storage. We analyzed the elemental and molecular composition of 401 soil samples, with relation to the species richness of 83 mammal and tree communities at a landscape scale across 4.8 million hectares in the northern Amazon. We found opposite e

Revealing the Dynamic Behavior of Active Sites on Acid-Functionalized CeO2 Catalysts for NOx Reduction.

Unraveling the dynamics of the active sites upon CeO2-based catalysts in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia (NH3-SCR) is challenging. In this work, we prepared tungsten-acidified and sulfated CeO2 catalysts and used operando spectroscopy to reveal the dynamics of acid sites and redox sites on catalysts during NH3-SCR reaction. We found that both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are needed to participate in the catalytic reaction. Notably, Brønsted acid sites are the main active sites after a tungsten-acidified or sulfated treatment, and the change of Brønsted acid sites s

Methoxy and bromo scans on N-(5-methoxyphenyl) methoxybenzenesulphonamides reveal potent cytotoxic compounds, especially against the human breast adenocarcinoma MCF7 cell line.

Thirty seven N-(5-methoxyphenyl)-4-methoxybenzenesulphonamide with methoxy or/and bromo substitutions (series 1-4) and with different substituents on the sulphonamide nitrogen have been synthesised. 21 showed sub-micromolar cytotoxicity against HeLa and HT-29 human tumour cell lines, and were particularly effective against MCF7. The most potent series has 2,5-dimethoxyanilines, especially the 4-brominated compounds 23-25. The active compounds inhibit microtubular protein polymerisation at micromolar concentrations, thus pointing at tubulin as the target. Co-treatment with the MDR inhibitor ver

Plant sulfur nutrition: From Sachs to Big Data.

Together with water and carbon dioxide plants require 14 essential mineral nutrients to finish their life cycle. The research in plant nutrition can be traced back to Julius Sachs, who was the first to experimentally prove the essentiality of mineral nutrients for plants. Among those elements Sachs showed to be essential is sulfur. Plant sulfur nutrition has been not as extensively studied as the nutrition of nitrogen and phosphate, probably because sulfur was not limiting for agriculture. However, with the reduction of atmospheric sulfur dioxide emissions sulfur deficiency has become common.

The backbone of progress--preclinical studies and innovations with zoledronic acid.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are antiresorptive agents that block pathologic bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclast function and later inducing osteoclast apoptosis. These agents localize to bone and break the vicious cycle of bone resorption that results from cross-stimulation between cancer cells and the bone remodeling cells, thereby reducing cancer-induced osteolysis and the tumor burden in bone. Thus nitrogen-containing BPs (N-BPs) have well established clinical benefits in the treatment of bone metastases from solid tumors and bone lesions from multiple myeloma. Preclinical data indicate that

Role of nitrogen oxides in the metabolism of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria.

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) can use oxygen and nitrite as electron acceptors. Nitrite reduction by Nitrosomonas is observed under three conditions: (i) hydrogen-dependent denitrification, (ii) anoxic ammonia oxidation with nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) and (iii) NO(x)-induced aerobic ammonia oxidation. NO(x) molecules play an important role in the conversion of ammonia and nitrite by AOB. Absence of nitric oxide (NO), which is generally detectable during ammonia oxidation, severely impairs ammonia oxidation by AOB. The lag phase of recovery of aerobic ammonia oxidation was significantly reduce

Competitive diesel engine emissions of sulphur and nitrogen species.

NO(x), nitrate and sulphate emissions from a typical European passenger car diesel engine have been measured testing eight different fuels under five steady operating conditions (reproducing modes of the European transient urban/extraurban certification cycle). It is confirmed that nitrogen species compete with sulphur compounds to be adsorbed by diesel particulate matter (DPM) before being emitted into the atmosphere. This competition is found to increase with engine load, and is explained on the basis of the different specific surface and adsorption capacity of soot particles under different

Air pollution as a risk factor in health impact assessments of a travel mode shift towards cycling.

BACKGROUND: Promotion of active commuting provides substantial health and environmental benefits by influencing air pollution, physical activity, accidents, and noise. However, studies evaluating intervention and policies on a mode shift from motorized transport to cycling have estimated health impacts with varying validity and precision. OBJECTIVE: To review and discuss the estimation of air pollution exposure and its impacts in health impact assessment studies of a shift in transport from cars to bicycles in order to guide future assessments. METHODS: A systematic database search of PubMed

Sustainability trade-offs in sludge-to-energy systems: a process-resolved assessment of thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment.

Thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) is increasingly integrated into sludge-to-energy systems to enhance energy recovery, yet its environmental performance remains uncertain because most life cycle assessments (LCAs) treat these systems as aggregated units, limiting the representation of process-level interactions and environmental trade-offs. This study evaluates THP at 60, 80, and 120 °C in a sludge-to-energy system by propagating experimentally derived process changes through an integrated framework that combines process modelling, LCA, and techno-economic analysis. THP at 120 °C improved

Unveiling crosstalk regulations within the polyamine pathway and between polyamine and purine pathways in Aedes aegypti females.

We previously demonstrated that ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) deficiency critically impairs nitrogen metabolism and survival in Aedes aegypti. To further examine the role of the polyamine pathway in Ae. aegypti nitrogen metabolism, we evaluated the expression of three additional genes encoding proteins involved in the biosynthetic pathway: S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase, spermidine synthase (SdS), spermine synthase (SmS), and seven genes encoding proteins involved in the catabolic pathway in fat body, midgut and Malpighian tubules by qPCR. Distinct transcriptional profiles were observed in

Depth and Seasonality of Soil Respiration in Caragana korshinskii Plantation on the Loess Plateau.

Quantifying deep soil (10-100 cm) and non-growing-season soil respiration (SR) is crucial for refining carbon (C) cycle models, yet the regulatory mechanisms governing these processes remain unclear. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on deep soils and non-growing seasons to elucidate how soil properties regulate SR under these special conditions. We conducted an on-site field experiment in the Caragana korshinskii plantation, measuring SR at soil depths of 0-10 cm, 10-50 cm, and 50-100 cm during the non-growing season and growing. The results suggested that the annual cumulative soil

Soil application of graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets alleviate cadmium toxicity by altering subcellular distribution, chemical forms of cadmium and improving nitrogen availability in soybean (Glycine max L.).

Cadmium (Cd)-contamination impairs biological nitrogen fixation in legumes (BNF), threatening global food security. Innovative strategies to enhance BNF and improve plant resistance to Cd are therefore crucial. This study investigates the effects of graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4 NSs) on soybean (Glycine max L.) in Cd contaminated soil, focusing on Cd distribution, chemical forms and nitrogen (N) fixation. Soybean plants were treated with 100 mg kg-1 g-C3N4 NSs, with or without 10 mg kg-1 Cd for 4 weeks. Soil addition of g-C3N4 NSs alleviated Cd toxicity and promote soybean growth

Synthesis of Chlorine- and Nitrogen-Containing Carbon Nanofibers for Water Purification from Chloroaromatic Compounds.

Chlorine- and nitrogen-containing carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were obtained by combined catalytic pyrolysis of trichloroethylene (C2HCl3) and acetonitrile (CH3CN). Their efficiency in the adsorption of 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCB) from water has been studied. The synthesis of CNFs was carried out over self-dispersing nickel catalyst at 600 °C. The produced CNFs possess a well-defined segmented structure, high specific surface area (~300 m2/g) and high porosity (0.5-0.7 cm3/g). The addition of CH3CN into the reaction mixture allows the introduction of nitrogen into the CNF structure and increases

Phenylbutyrate improves nitrogen disposal via an alternative pathway without eliciting an increase in protein breakdown and catabolism in control and ornithine transcarbamylase-deficient patients.

BACKGROUND: Phenylbutyrate is a drug used in patients with urea cycle disorder to elicit alternative pathways for nitrogen disposal. However, phenylbutyrate administration decreases plasma branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) concentrations, and previous research suggests that phenylbutyrate administration may increase leucine oxidation, which would indicate increased protein degradation and net protein loss. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effects of phenylbutyrate administration on whole-body protein metabolism, glutamine, leucine, and urea kinetics in healthy and ornithine transcarbamylase-defi
