We present a series of 100 deviated noses treated over 5-year period. A classification into four groups was proposed and used to determine preoperative strategy according to the type of deformation. The main corrective methods were lateral cartilage grafts for C-shaped noses and removal and reinstallation of the nasal cartilage for S-shaped nose and "lay down" noses. The best results were obtained for trauma-induced deformations occurring after puberty. Lay-down nose were more difficult to treat than C- and S-shaped noses. This investigation was designed to evaluate the effect of the common topical nasal decongestant oxymetazoline hydrochloride on the early local tissue defense in an experimental bacterial infection. Airflow at the nose and mouth is routinely measured during polysomnography for the evaluation of respiratory disturbances during sleep. The usual monitoring device is a small thermocouple placed in front of the nose and mouth that qualitatively detects airflows in or out. Cineradiography of the pharynx during simulated snoring was done in 6 healthy volunteers, and supraglottic pressure and flow rate were recorded in 12 others. Three cases of intestinal type adenocarcinomas of the nose and sinuses are described. In two of them the tumors were associated with an extended exposure to wood dust, while no association with any known exposure factor was detected in the third. Clinical history, pathology, treatment and follow-up of each case are reviewed.

A case is presented of a nose bitten off by a dog and successfully replanted by artery-to-artery and artery-to-vein anastomosis. In the absence of vein-to-vein anastomosis, the clinical course suggested that artery-to-vein anastomosis was useful for venous drainage, although the extent to which this contributed to the survival is not known.

Moreover, this technique offers the advantage of correcting Saddle nose with or without bone grafting. We have examined the measurements of LTC4 and histamine in nasal lavage fluids and blown secretions as a possible model of the early mediator events during nasal allergy. A nasal challenge with grass pollen extract was undertaken on two separate occasions in 20 patients with a history of seasonal rhinitis and a positive immediate skin test to grass pollen. The few accounts of the radiographic features in the nose and sinuses of Wegener's granulomatosis and lethal midline granuloma have involved small numbers. This paper reviews these changes in 20 cases of Wegener's granulomatosis and 7 cases of lethal midline granuloma. Anaerobic bacteria outnumber aerobes at most oropharyngeal sites, with counts up to 10(11)/ml of fluid, and have been implicated in infections of all structures of the head and neck. They are common in chronic otitis media, chronic sinusitis, and various soft-tissue infections. These infections are initiated primarily by mucosal breaks. Allergic rhinitis patients were challenged with intranasal allergen aerosols after pretreatment with hydroxyzine and phenylpropanolamine, singly and in combination. Hydroxyzine protected against itching, sneezing and hypersecretion but aggravated obstruction. Phenylpropanolamine had a subtle but measurable anti-congestive effect. This model quantitates and confirms the complementary effects of combined antihistamine-decongestant therapy.

The physician who initially examines the patient with a nasal or facial injury should thoroughly inspect the external and internal aspects of the nose and also evaluate the facial bones. General anesthesia may be necessary in examining children. Although roentgenograms of the nose and facial bones are usually obtained in cases of nasal injury, they rarely influence treatment. Treatment goals should be to maintain or restore satisfactory function and to ensure a good cosmetic result. The patient (or parents) should be advised to be alert to possible delayed abnormalities from the injury.

A retrospective study was performed on 18 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma involving the nose, paranasal sinuses, or palate. The most common symptoms seen initially were referable to a mass or epistaxis. Surgery was the only form of therapy associated with long survival, although the addition of postoperative radiation therapy appears to prolong survival. All recurrences were first noted in the primary area. Factors that correlated best with surgical were clear surgical margins and absence of cranial nerve involvement.
