Rapid and quantitative detection of Aspergillus from clinical samples may facilitate an early diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). Culture is commonly regarded as the gold standard for diagnosis of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. However, nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) have rapidly replaced culture for diagnostics in many settings. BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (SA) in the nose can be a simple colonizer but also may create an intramucosal reservoir causing recurrent infections or can be a specific immune modulator through superantigenic mechanisms. The protein and nucleic acid contents of liver, spleen, muscle, kidney, and brain were studied in experimental autoimmune thyroiditis. Protein and ribonucleic acid levels showed a positive increase in the case of liver, spleen, and muscle on days 56 and 98 after immunization and on day 147 they reached control levels. Spleen deoxyribonucleic acid showed a significant increase on day 56, whereas the other days showed no change. Kidney and brain tissue revealed no change.

An in situ hybridization technique was developed for the strand-specific detection of yellow fever virus (YFV) RNA. An 35S-labeled, transcribed RNA probe was used to detect positive-sense polarity YFV genomic RNA in infected C6/36 (Aedes albopictus) cells, dissected mosquito tissues, and sections of plastic-embedded, YFV-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Mosquito tissues fixed in buffered Formalin retained morphological integrity. The low concentrations of probe used yielded high specific signal on infected specimens and low background signal on uninfected specimens.
