In a Spirit of Restoration: A Phenomenology of Nursing Practice and the Criminal Justice System.

Conditions within jails and prisons are a public health crisis, necessitating critical reform measures. An innovative collaboration between a Midwestern College of Nursing and Cook County Department of Corrections provides students with the opportunity to develop health education for both those detained in the jail and the corrections officers. A phenomenological approach, recognizing the importance of intuitive and cognitive understanding, is offered as a framework for practice in complex environments. Principles of restorative justice provide a bridge between primary, secondary, and tertiary

Culturally appropriate care for pregnant Latina women who are victims of domestic violence.

Latina women who are pregnant and experiencing domestic violence face many barriers to accessing care and finding culturally appropriate services. These barriers are entwined in a complex web of social, cultural, economic, political, and legal issues. Leininger's cultural care model is presented as a framework to discuss culturally appropriate assessment of Latina women in various health care settings. Recommendations are made for the role of nurses in primary prevention interventions at the individual and community levels.

[Organ donation for transplantation. Survey of opinions of physicians and paramedics in the province of Vaud].

In 1987, two media campaigns were organized in Switzerland to promote donor cards. The purpose of this study was to test their impact on the medical community. Questionnaires were sent to qualified practitioners, doctors in training and intensive care nurses. It is concluded that the campaigns for organ donation must be repeated and that their quality can be improved. It is however more urgent to improve the level of knowledge among doctors and other health professionals.

Preventive measures for falls and fractures in the community.

Falls and fractures, are a major public health concern among older adults in the UK, often resulting in injury, loss of independence and increased demands on health and social care services. The causes of falls are multifactorial such as muscle weakness, poor balance, visual impairment, polypharmacy, frailty and comorbidities, as well as environmental hazards. Osteoporosis further increases the risk and severity of fragility fractures, particularly in the spine, wrist and hip. Evidence demonstrates that community-based interventions can significantly reduce falls and associated injuries. These

"Pushed to Their Limits": Health Care Provider Perspectives on Barriers and Facilitators to Implementing a Mind-Body and Activity Program for Older Adults With Chronic Pain in a Community Clinic for the Underserved.

Older adults from underserved backgrounds experience chronic pain at a rate of 60% to 75%. Pharmacological treatments have limited efficacy and involve considerable risks. Mind-body interventions hold promise to improve pain outcomes but are typically not implemented in community clinics in which they are needed most, thus contributing to health disparities in chronic pain treatment. We conducted qualitative focus groups and interviews with 20 providers (eg, primary care doctors, nurses, administrators). We sought their perspectives on barriers and facilitators to implementing an evidence base

A comparison of the positive and negative work attitudes of home health care and hospital nurses.

This article compares the positive and negative stress response work attitudes of 126 home health care registered nurses (RNs) and 145 hospital RNs. Home health care nurses reported significantly lower levels of the negative work attitudes, anger/hostility, and frustration with the system. There was no significant difference between the two groups of RNs among the positive work attitudes of job satisfaction, positive affect, hope, meaningfulness, manageability, and trust in the supervisor and the negative work attitudes frustration with the supervisor, job alienation, and negative affect.

Parents' and nurses' experiences of end-of-life care in intensive care for children: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The provision of end-of-life care for children in intensive care is a stressful and traumatic event for parents with immediate and life-long impacts. End-of-life care for children is also challenging for critical care nurses who must balance the child's clinical requirements concurrently with facilitating and supporting the needs of parents and family members. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the research evidence about nurses' and parents' experiences of the provision of end-of-life care in intensive care for children? REVIEW METHODS: Following registration with the International Pros

Trends over time in prescribing by English primary care nurses: a secondary analysis of a national prescription database.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of countries legislate for nurses to have medication prescribing authority although it is a contested issue. The UK is one of these countries, giving authority to nurses with additional qualifications since 1992 and incrementally widened the scope of nurse prescribing, most recently in 2006. The policy intention for primary care was to improve efficiency in service delivery through flexibility between medical and nursing roles. The extent to which this has occurred is uncertain. This study investigated nurses prescribing activities, over time, in English primary ca

Exploring the interconnections of loneliness, anxiety, and depression among nursing students: a network analysis approach.

OBJECTIVE: Nursing students experience higher rates of anxiety and depression than students in other disciplines due to the demanding academic requirements and clinical training challenges. Loneliness and symptoms of anxiety and depression occur simultaneously; however, the specific interrelationships between these states remain inadequately investigated. This study aimed to utilize network analysis to examine the item-level reciprocal action between loneliness, anxiety, and depression among nursing students. METHODS: A total of 888 nursing students were assessed using the short-form UCLA Lon

Alcohol and other drug problems in Australia: the urgent need for nurse education.

The economic, social and health costs associated with alcohol and other drug use, including medicines, impact on the Australian community profoundly. Many Australians use alcohol and other drugs (AODs) on a regular basis and a significant number experience problems at some time. There are about 25,000 drug-related deaths annually, the majority of which are related to alcohol and tobacco use. Many young people die or are injured as a direct result of alcohol intoxication, accidental overdose and related problems, and significant numbers of elderly people are hospitalised, permanently incapacita

Breaking the cycle: how Spain's dependency care system creates occupational inequalities in geriatric nursing assistants and the need for reform.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of Spain's Dependency Law aimed to enhance care for those with dependency needs. However, its focus on privatized service provision has raised concerns about potential inequalities in working conditions for geriatric nursing assistants working in long-term care, particularly regarding resources, workload, and labour protections between public and private ownership. This study aims to explore the employment conditions, working conditions and health status of geriatric nursing assistants in Spanish nursing homes, specifically examining the potential impact of facil

The failure of exposure treatment in agoraphobia: implications for the practice of nurse therapists and community psychiatric nurses.

There are no systematic studies of the failure of psychiatric nursing interventions and few very such studies in the psychological/psychiatric outcome literature. This study reports a controlled study of exposure treatment with agoraphobic clients who were treated by nurse therapists and psychologists. This includes an analysis of the four categories of treatment failure (i.e. treatment refusers, treatment dropouts, failures and relapsers). The analysis consisted of an examination of the outcome data of clients who met a priori criteria for the categories of failure and an examination of quest

Mpox in the United States: Current implications for public health nursing.

In 2022, mpox, an orthopoxvirus first isolated in 1958 in cynomolgus monkeys, became a global public health threat. While the virus can be communicated through skin-to-skin contact from any infected person to non-infected person, most cases in the United States have been in gay and bisexual men. Consequently, early public health and community-based efforts concentrated on reducing infections in this population. This article explores current mpox case count epidemiologic data and trends. In addition, vaccination indications, contraindications, adverse events, and national administration data ar
