Short Bowel Syndrome in an Infant.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a malabsorptive state that may occur either after surgical bowel resection or as the result of congenital bowel anomalies. SBS can incur significant morbidity and mortality including intestinal failure, cholestasis, sepsis, and death. For patients with SBS, management involves a multidisciplinary approach that begins with neonatology, pediatric surgery, nutritionists, pharmacists, and nurses in the NICU and also includes the transition to an intestinal rehabilitation program. The aim of this review is to provide the neonatologist with an overview of the common cau

A Blueprint for Medium-Fidelity Postpartum Hemorrhage Simulations.

Many pregnancy-related deaths remain preventable, particularly those associated with postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). The use of bundles for care of women during the perinatal period has been shown to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Drills or simulation-based learning are an integral part of a broader implementation of postpartum hemorrhage bundles. In addition, The Joint Commission has cited drills as one of the required performance elements of accreditation. It is therefore incumbent upon perinatal clinical teams to conduct PPH simulations as a readiness tool. This article is intended to

The utilization of clinical decision support tools to identify neonatal hypothermia and its associated risk factors: A prospective observational study.

Hypothermia (axillary temperature less than 36.5°) is a major source of neonatal morbidity and mortality, with a disproportionate burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the importance of thermoregulation on newborn outcomes, the global epidemiologic landscape of neonatal hypothermia is poorly characterized. Clinical decision support (CDS) software provides point-of-care recommendations to guide clinical management and may support data capture in settings with limited informatics infrastructure. Towards this end, we conducted a prospective observational study of the Novi

American Heart Association 2025 Guidelines: Basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, pediatric advanced life support, and neonatal resuscitation.

The American Heart Association (AHA) regularly updates its evidence-based practice recommendations for basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, pediatric life support, and neonatal life support. This article reviews the latest AHA guidelines, which were released in October 2025, highlights important changes, and demonstrates how nurses can incorporate these changes into their practice. Examples of new practice recommendations include back blows and abdominal thrusts in the management of severe foreign body obstruction in the conscious adult, use of the two thumbs encircling ap

[Hereditary epidermolysis bullosa in children].

Hereditary epidermolysis bullosa (HES) is a heterogeneous group of rare genetic disorders characterized by localized or generalized fragility of the skin and/or mucous membranes, varying greatly in severity from one form to another and even within a subgroup. Skin wounds can be a source of pain, pruritus and discomfort from birth. Progression varies from patient to patient and from form to form. Specific care must be provided from the neonatal period onwards, and throughout life, to aid healing and limit complications. Nurses are at the heart of skin care for HES patients, and must be familiar

[Rethinking oxygen therapy for premature infants in terms of oxidative stress].

Oxygen therapy is one of the most common interventions in the care of premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Premature infants are at risk of oxidant injury due to inadequate anti-oxidant defenses. Common complications of premature infants such as retinopathy, chronic lung disease, intraventricular hemorrhaging, and periventricular leukomalacia may also be associated with secondary oxidant injuries. This article explores relationships between oxygen and complications linked to premature delivery. It also outlines correct concepts and practices of oxygen therapy for NICU

The medically complex premature infant in primary care.

The survival rate of the smallest and youngest of premature infants has continued to improve as medical technology has progressed. The current edge of viability is represented by infants born at 23 to 25 weeks' gestation. Neonatal survival of infants at 23 weeks' gestation ranges from 11% to 30%. Survival to hospital discharge for infants ranging from 23 to 26 weeks' gestation is about 70%; 30% to 50% of these infants have moderate to severe disability. Nurse practitioners and physicians will be meeting these young infants in primary care offices after they have been discharged from the neonat

Congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma: A rare neonatal dermatoses responding to acitretin.

Congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma is a rare and severe form of ichthyosis manifesting in the neonatal age group. We report a child with diffuse peeling of skin and erythroderma presenting on the 2nd day of birth. With aseptic nursing care along with emollients and oral acitretin, the child's quality of life improved remarkably, hence highlighting the point of early and judicious use of acitretin in reducing disease morbidity.

Unilateral neonatal testicular torsion.

Testicular torsion in the neonatal period is an unusual finding. Because of the high morbidity associated with this condition, early recognition and appropriate management are imperative. Testicular torsion may be unilateral or bilateral and may occur prenatally or in the early postnatal period. Often, the nurse is the first health care provider to examine a newborn after birth and must be aware of the signs of this condition to minimize the risk of testicular loss.

Syphilis. An old disease, a contemporary perinatal problem.

The incidence of syphilis in the United States has almost doubled in the past 5 years, with some cities posting an increase of more than 500% during this period. As a result, greater numbers of neonates infected with congenital syphilis are treated in nurseries across the country. The incidence, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of syphilis are described, and the nursing implications associated with caring for those at risk of contracting the disease are presented.

National scale of neonatal CPAP to district hospitals in Malawi improves survival for neonates weighing between 1.0 and 1.3 kg.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a national quality improvement programme implementing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) at government hospitals in Malawi improved outcomes for neonates prioritised by an algorithm recommending early CPAP for infants weighing 1.0-1.3 kg (the 50th percentile weight at 30 weeks' gestation). DESIGN: The analysis includes neonates admitted with respiratory illness for 5.5 months before CPAP was introduced (baseline period) and for 15 months immediately after CPAP was implemented (implementation period). A follow-up data analysis was completed for neonates

Emergency Nursing Care of a Pregnant Patient With Acute Abdomen Owing to Acute Pancreatitis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Acute pancreatitis in pregnancy is a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of acute abdomen for both the pregnant patient and the unborn child. Prompt recognition and multidisciplinary coordination in the emergency department are essential. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old gravida 3, para 0 patient at 39 + 1 weeks' gestation presented to the emergency department with severe upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Laboratory testing showed markedly elevated serum amylase and lipase, and ultrasonography identified gallstones consistent with gallstone pancreatitis. INTER

Moral dilemmas in neonatology as experienced by health care practitioners: a qualitative approach.

During the last two decades there has been an enormous development in treatment possibilities in the field of neonatology, particularly for (extremely) premature infants. Although there are cross-cultural differences in treatment strategy, an overview of the literature suggests that every country is confronted with moral dilemmas in this area. These concern decisions to initiate or withhold treatment directly at birth and, later on, decisions to withdraw treatment with the possible consequence that the child will die. Given that the neonate cannot express his or her own will, who will decide?

Automated control of fraction of inspired oxygen: is it time for widespread adoption?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the past two decades, numerous algorithms for automated control of the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) have been developed and incorporated into contemporary neonatal ventilators and high-flow devices in an attempt to optimize supplemental oxygen therapy in preterm infants. This review explores whether current evidence is sufficient to recommend widespread adoption of automated oxygen control in neonatal care. RECENT FINDINGS: To date, 15 studies have compared automated versus manual control of FiO2 in preterm infants on respiratory support. This includes four new r

Lessons from Fukushima: Potassium Iodide After a Nuclear Disaster.

The release of radioactive iodine after a nuclear disaster, such as those that occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan 10 years ago and Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, increases thyroid cancer risk among people who are exposed. Certain populations are especially vulnerable, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and neonates. Potassium iodide (KI) can effectively block radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid gland if taken immediately after a radiation release. This article examines lessons learned from Fukushima to enhance disaste

Perinatal bereavement support service: three-year review.

Perinatal loss and grief have been recognized as a special form of loss in the last ten years. Perinatal death includes miscarriage, therapeutic abortion, stillbirth, and infant death shortly after birth. Acknowledgement of the death and support to mourn their loss by significant others promotes resolution of this bereavement. If perinatal bereavement is not resolved, one-quarter to one-third of mothers may go on to develop a clinical depression. A multidisciplinary Perinatal Support Service is in place at Women's College Hospital to provide grief counselling to the mother and her family who h

Neonatal mortality and its associated factors among neonates admitted at public hospitals, pastoral region, Ethiopia: A health facility based study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality is a public health issue in, Ethiopia. Unfortunately, the issue is noticeably under-reported and underestimated, so the true gravity of the situation cannot be acknowledged in developing regions of the country. Regrettably, there is no single study to show the rates and predictors of neonatal mortality for Afar region. Thus, this study aims to assess neonatal mortality and associated factors in Afar region, Ethiopia. METHODS: A health facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 403 neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) from Jan

REACT: An Interprofessional Education and Safety Program to Recognize and Manage the Compromised Obstetric Patient.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of pregnancies complicated by preexisting medical conditions as well as an increase in maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States. The goal of the REACT quality and safety initiative was to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality by providing an interprofessional education program for recognizing and managing the woman who becomes compromised during pregnancy, childbirth, or the puerperium. REACT is an acronym for Recognize, Educate, Activate, Communicate, and Treat early signs and symptoms of maternal compromise. Early signs
