[Intensive psychiatric treatment system for bulimic patients by group therapy].

Concurrent bulimia nervosa/purging type and anorexia nervosa/binge-purging type including binge eating and purging behaviors are considered chronic types of eating disorders. The bulimic patients in this study had both these disorders. Psychiatric treatment for patients with eating disorders must focus on therapy of these bulimic patients, because bulimic patients are more prevalent in the psychiatric hospital and clinic, and they have more comorbid psychiatric disorders and more other addictive behaviors than other patients with eating disorders. We have devised an intensive psychiatric treat

Malnutrition in stroke patients on the rehabilitation service and at follow-up: prevalence and predictors.

This prospective study presents the prevalence and risk factors of malnutrition in 49 consecutive stroke patients on the rehabilitation (Rehab) service and at 2- to 4-month follow-up. Malnutrition was diagnosed using biochemical and anthropometric data. Stroke patients, on admission to Rehab, have a very high prevalence of malnutrition. Malnutrition, 49% on admission, declined to 34%, 22%, and 19% at 1 month, 2 months, and follow-up, respectively. Dysphagia, 47% on admission, was associated with malnutrition (p = .032) and significantly declined over time. Using logistic regression, predictors

The rise and fall of celiac disease in the United States.

Because celiac disease is greatly under-diagnosed in the United States, a common assumption is that U.S. doctors and researchers always have considered the condition extremely rare. However, the disorder captured widespread medical attention at the beginning of the twentieth century. Luther Emmett Holt, a leading pediatrician, encouraged three other doctors to investigate the condition. Two helped to associate celiac disease with elite medical institutions. The third linked it to the marketing efforts of the United Fruit Company. Interest in celiac declined after 1965, partly as a result of th

Meeting zinc and copper intake requirements in the parenterally fed preterm and full-term infant.

To determine the intravenous zinc and copper intakes required to build up body stores in the preterm infant and achieve positive retention in full-term infants, balance studies were completed in 38 preterm, full-term, and full-term SGA infants who received complete intravenously delivered nutrient formulations excluding zinc and copper. Zinc as ZnSo4 and copper as CuCl2 were then added to individual infants' formulations, with intakes ranging from 91 to 824 micrograms/kg/day (zinc) and 8 to 92 micrograms/kg/day (copper). Samples of infusate as well as urine, stool, and aspirate were collected

2023 aerodigestive Society meeting: A multidisciplinary literature year in review.

The 2023 Aerodigestive Society meeting aimed to emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing aerodigestive disorders that affect the lungs, upper airway, and gastrointestinal tract in children. This approach necessitates the collaboration of multiple specialists and allied healthcare professionals. A collaborative approach to aerodigestive disorders is a young field with many opportunities for investigation of disease understanding and treatment approaches. This narrative review synthesizes key studies presented during the "Year in Review" session at the meeting, repres

Recognition and Management of Feeding Dysfunction in the Pediatric Patient with Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Feeding is a complex skill requiring coordination of multiple body systems. Multiple factors are considered in feeding dysfunction in pediatric patients with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, including overall development, nutritional status, mealtime behaviors, and medical comorbidities. Symptoms of feeding dysfunction vary by age, with maladaptive learned feeding behaviors spanning all age ranges. Knowledge of the normal acquisition of feeding skills is critical to interpret the impact of the disease and plan appropriate intervention. Assessment and treatment from a feeding and swallo

Management of Monogenic and Syndromic Obesity.

Similar to the general population, lifestyle interventions focused on nutrition and physical activity form the foundation for treating obesity caused by rare genetic disorders. Additional therapies, including metreleptin and setmelanotide, that target defects within the leptin signaling pathway can effectively synergize with lifestyle efforts to treat monogenic disorders of leptin, leptin receptor, proopiomelanocortin (POMC), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 1 (PCSK1) and syndromic conditions, such as the ciliopathies Bardet-Biedl and Alström syndromes, whose pathophysiological

The age-related eye disease study (AREDS).

Some of the earliest and best known manifestations of malnutrition involve visual disorders, such as blindness that results from vitamin A deficiency. Interest is now being focused on the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of chronic age-related disorders. The Age-related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) was conducted in order to determine whether high-dose supplementation could influence the natural progres sion of eye disease in older Americans. AREDS found that prospective administration of purified vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper had some benefits for age-rela

The role of climate change in maternal nutrition and fetal development: a narrative review.

Climate change, driven by both natural processes and anthropogenic activities, exerts profound effects on atmospheric and environmental conditions. Maternal nutrition plays a critical role in fetal growth, development, and pregnancy outcomes; thus, disruptions in food systems caused by climate change pose significant risks to maternal and child health, particularly in low-income regions already burdened by malnutrition. Environmental stressors associated with climate change can compromise dietary quality and reduce the availability of essential micronutrients, thereby exacerbating adverse heal

Oral nutritional supplements in clinical nutrition: Insights into healthcare professionals' knowledge and practices.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition remains a widespread clinical challenge with significant consequences on morbidity, mortality, and healthcare utilization. Despite evidence-based guidelines, nutritional interventions are often hindered by knowledge gaps among healthcare professionals (HCPs). This study aimed to evaluate HCPs' knowledge and practices concerning oral nutritional supplements (ONS), based on evidence-based recommendations from the Turkish Clinical Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Society (KEPAN). METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted between November 25 and December 26,

Effects of an individualized nutrition intervention on the respiratory quotient of patients with liver failure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition and energy metabolism disorders are characterized by a low respiratory quotient in patients with liver failure and often lead to poor prognosis. Therefore, early nutrition interventions are crucial for patients with liver failure to ameliorate abnormal metabolic status and malnutrition. This study explored the effect of an individualized nutrition intervention on the respiratory quotient of patients with liver failure. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: An individualized 2-week nutrition intervention was conducted on patients with nutritional risk caused by live

Management of the short bowel syndrome after extensive small bowel resection.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a global malabsorption syndrome that results from extensive intestinal resections. It used to be a typical complication of repetitive bowel resections in patients with Crohn's disease. However, due to improved medical and surgical therapies for these patients it currently occurs more frequently as a consequence of vascular disorders in adults (intestinal infarction) and congenital aberrations in children, respectively. Adequate therapy depends on the degree of (small) bowel losses and on resulting functional disturbances. Moreover, it must be adjusted to the posto

Manipulation of the Growth Hormone-Insulin-Like Growth Factor (GH-IGF) Axis: A Treatment Strategy to Reverse the Effects of Early Life Developmental Programming.

Evidence from human clinical, epidemiological, and experimental animal models has clearly highlighted a link between the early life environment and an increased risk for a range of cardiometabolic disorders in later life. In particular, altered maternal nutrition, including both undernutrition and overnutrition, spanning exposure windows that cover the period from preconception through to early infancy, clearly highlight an increased risk for a range of disorders in offspring in later life. This process, preferentially termed "developmental programming" as part of the developmental origins of

Molecular basis of precision nutrition: Food components, microbiome-derived metabolites, and multi-omics modeling.

Metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and fatty liver disease, reflect multifactorial interactions among diet, host genetics, the environment, and the gut microbiome. However, conventional population-level dietary guidance often fails to capture the marked interindividual variability in metabolic responses to identical foods and nutrients. Precision nutrition has therefore emerged as an integrative paradigm that combines genomics, epigenomics regulation, microRNA-mediated control, and microbiome profiling to refine dietary recommendations, with a growing

Syndromic diarrhea/Tricho-hepato-enteric syndrome.

Syndromic diarrhea/Tricho-hepato-enteric syndrome (SD/THE) is a rare and severe bowel disorder caused by mutation in SKIV2L or in TTC37, 2 genes encoding subunits of the putative human SKI complex. The estimated prevalence is 1/1,000,000 births and the transmission is autosomal recessive. The classical form is characterized by 5 clinical signs: intractable diarrhea of infancy beginning in the first month of life, usually leading to failure to thrive and requiring parenteral nutrition; facial dysmorphism characterised by prominent forehead and cheeks, broad nasal root and hypertelorism; hair ab

What is missing in our understanding of urban slum environments and maternal, infant and young child nutrition from publicly available data in Asia and the Pacific?

Given the recent, rapid urbanisation in Asia and the Pacific region, coupled with increases in the triple burden of malnutrition, we need to better understand maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) for populations living in urban slum environments. This research used existing large-scale datasets to explore MIYCN indicators for those living in urban slum, compared with urban nonslum, areas. Data since 2015 from available Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS; Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan and the Philippines) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS; Bangladesh

Nutritional Status of Pre-school Children and Determinant Factors of Autism: A Case-Control Study.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder triggered by several factors, including those of genetic and environmental nature. ASD can alter communication, behavior, and children's nutritional status, placing them at high risk for nutritional imbalances. Therefore, this study aims to assess preschool autistic children's nutritional status as compared to that of Typically Developing (TD) children of the same age. The study also revealed some of the ASD risk factors among the Jordanian population. It included 52 ASD and 51 TD children (3-6 years), and considered sociodemograp

[Nutritional support as an adjunct to the treatment of upper gastrointestinal cancer patients--esophageal and gastric cancer].

Patients with cancer of the upper gastrointestinal tract such as the esophagus and stomach are malnourished as a result of their cancer-bearing status. In such patients, malnutrition reduces the effects of anti-cancer therapy including surgical treatment. Therefore, we studied the effect of nutritional support in patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer. The incidence of postoperative complications was correlated with the preoperative nutritional status. Thus, improvement of nutritional status by preoperative nutritional support is thought to be important. As metabolic disturbances frequent
