Protected designation of origin in EU olive oils: Rethinking quality differentiation, regulatory frameworks and future challenges.

Olive oil remains an emblematic product of the European agri-food system, increasingly shaped by consumers for authenticity, geographical origin, and sustainability. This has reinforced the relevance of European Union (EU) quality schemes, particularly Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs). However, despite scientific and technological advances in olive oil production, many PDO olive oil specifications have remained largely static, raising concerns about current relevance. This study critically evaluates EU PDO extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) by integrated meta-analysis with bibliometric and…

Nature Meets Science: The Role of Food-Grade Oils and Green Excipients in Pharmaceutical Nanoemulsion Formulation.

Nanoemulsions are pivotal carriers which are increasingly adopted as carriers for poorly soluble active molecules. This review provides a critical overview of 'green' nanoemulsions, which are systems based on renewable, biodegradable, and non-toxic components and/or using sustainable production techniques. We here focus on the role of food-grade oils (including poly-unsaturated fatty acid-rich sources) and green excipients, with special attention on the interfacial properties of biosurfactants such as proteins, polysaccharides, and small-molecule surfactants. This review provides a critical ov…

Effects of essential oils on foulbrood bacteria and honey bee workers (Apis mellifera) under laboratory conditions.

INTRODUCTION: American and European foulbrood diseases (AFB and EFB, respectively) result in considerable economic losses for beekeepers. Currently, no satisfactory methods are available for the treatment of either disease. There has been a recent surge of interest in the use of natural substances, such as essential oils (EOs), as a means of combating infections in apiaries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of a number of EOs against the causative agents of AFB and EFB, namely Paenibacillus larvae and Melissococcus plutonius, respectively, and the…

Stimulus-responsive nano-enabled chitosan-based films and coatings incorporating essential oils for active food packaging.

Stimulus-responsive chitosan-based films and coatings incorporating essential oils (EOs) are emerging as promising active food packaging systems capable of delivering antimicrobial and antioxidant functions on demand. Compared with conventional chitosan or free-EO formulations, these nano-enabled materials offer improved EO stabilization, reduced premature volatilization, and more controlled release behavior in response to environmental triggers such as pH, moisture, temperature, and, in some cases, ionic strength or other spoilage-associated changes. This review examines how nanoencapsulation…
