OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the applicability of a simple mathematical formula for prediction of individual child linear growth. The formula describes a square root dependence of height on age with only two constants, k and C.
METHODS: Retrospective serial height measurements of 137 healthy children (61 female), who attended clinic in the Pediatrics Department at the University of California, San Francisco were used. For each child, two of the initial measurements and their corresponding measurement times were used to determine the values of k and C. By substituting th

Pediculosis is a common infestation in schoolchildren but little is known about the factors influencing its prevalence. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of head lice in schoolchildren in Ghent and to investigate the independent association between individual characteristics of the child, socio-economic status (SES) of the family and head lice. The prevalence of head lice at baseline and 14 days after treatment advice was determined by the wet combing method in a total of 6,169 schoolchildren age 2.5 to 12 years from Ghent (Belgium). Age, sex, educational level and hair cha

BACKGROUND: Findings are presented of the second phase of a European longitudinal study of families created by assisted reproduction. The present investigation reports on data obtained during the child's transition to adolescence.
METHODS: A total of 102 IVF families, 94 donor insemination (DI) families, 102 adoptive families, and 102 families with a naturally conceived child were compared on standardized interview and questionnaire measures of parenting and children's psychological well-being.
RESULTS: The assisted reproduction families were similar to the adoptive and natural conception fa

As a deaf mute, because mute and more often than not deaf, and then deaf and dumb, because deaf and therefore dumb, the deaf child inevitably deprived of spontaneous speech was considered up to the end of the middle ages as having no possibility of language or of thought, left to the sorry fate of being part of a sporadic population expressing themselves by gestures, a language bereft of past and future, understood only by a few members of the family or occasionally deaf neighbours. During the Renaissance, it appeared that with specific education the deaf child could talk, have a language, and

Interventions to improve child health depend, at least implicitly, on changing maternal knowledge and behaviour and a reallocation of maternal time. There have been few studies, however, of the time cost involved in the adoption of new health technologies and even fewer that examine changes in maternal activities in response to child illness. The present study examines maternal daytime activities and investigates changes that occur when children are ill. We examine the impact of acute childhood diarrhoea episodes on the activity patterns of the mother/caretaker in this setting. The results sho

Children with learning disabilities form a large pool of patients seen by neurologists for help in understanding the disability and deciding which forms of remediation are appropriate. Learning disabilities may accompany a large variety of other neurologic disabilities, but the usual child with such a problem is in excellent health. A thorough office evaluation for possible medical problems is always necessary, but most children do not require laboratory testing. All children with learning disabilities, whether or not they have accompanying neurologic problems, should be seen for psychological

This study reports on the reliability and validity for two measures developed for screening of symptoms in child sexual abuse (CSA)-the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children-Screening Form (TSCC-SF) and the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children-Screening Form (TSCYC-SF). The sample of 200 children and caregivers received outpatient treatment. Internal consistencies ranged from an alpha of 0.79-0.85. Concurrent validity was demonstrated by correlations with the TSCC and TSCYC. The TSCC-SF General Trauma (GT) was only correlated Child Behavior Checklist (r = .236 for the Anxious Depressed

The current study examined the influence of the sex of the parent and the sex of the child on perceptions of sexually abusive behaviors. Vignettes illustrating different forms of sexual abuse were rated by 124 participants, with the different parent-child pairs (mother-daughter, mother-son, father-daughter, father-son) substituted into the vignettes being the only difference between groups. Two-way between subjects ANOVAs revealed that sexually abusive behaviors by mothers were perceived as less damaging to child victims (F (1, 120 = 7.56, p < .01) than the same sexually abusive behaviors comm

Encephaloceles, while a common entity affecting 1:4000 live births, typically occur in the occipital region. Encephaloceles involving the frontal region comprise only 15% of all cases. Naso-orbital encephaloceles are rarely seen. Our case profiles a child born at term with an atrial septal defect (ASD), micrognathia, cleft lip, and frontonasal as well as bilateral naso-orbital encephaloceles. At birth the encephaloceles were undetected. During the cleft palate pre-operative preparation, the bilateral naso-orbital encephaloceles were diagnosed as dacrocystoceles for which the child underwent su

A patient with inflammatory bowel disease and sacroiliitis had haplotypes A10,B18 and Aw32,b18 at the major histocompatibility locus. Serum total complement and C2 hemolytic complement activities were undetectable; levels of the remaining C1-C9 components were normal. The parents, both siblings, and a child each had half-normal levels of C2 and either the A10,B18 or the Aw32,b18 hla haplotype. In a second unrelated family, an only child and both parents developed inflammatory bowel disease. The father and child had HLA haplotype A10,B18, but, along with the mother, each had normal serum levels…

BACKGROUND: Child abuse and wife abuse are linked. Studies indicate 30% to 59% of mothers of children reported for child abuse also are battered. In homes where domestic violence occurs, the children are at increased risk of physical abuse or neglect. Children who witness battering of their mothers are at risk for psychosocial sequelae including developmental delays and posttraumatic stress disorder.
OBJECTIVE: To determine pediatric emergency medicine fellows' level of preparedness to respond to battered mothers, and to assess obstacles and attitudinal barriers to their effective response.

BACKGROUND: Medication adherence is defined as the degree to which the medications taken reflect the prescribed intention and is influenced by various factors. Different factors, such as parental trauma or parenting style, may influence their child or children's medical treatment adherence. Authoritative, or "flexible," parenting is known to develop the most nurturing relationship between parent and child or children. The relationship between parental factors, such as parenting style and trauma level, and their influence on child medication adherence is being explored.
OBJECTIVE: This study e

AIM: Understanding how haptic interaction supports interpersonal coordination during locomotion is important to develop assistive technologies when necessary. While significant work has been done on haptic interactions during adult locomotion, little is known about how children interact between each other or with an adult during walking. Here, we studied haptic-guided locomotion in children and adults.
METHODS: We examined 11 pairs (adult-adult, child-child [6-8 years old], and adult-child) walking side by side with hand contact toward targets, with one participant leading and one blindfolded

BACKGROUND: In some areas of the world, breast milk is seen as a potential source of child diarrhoea. While this belief has been explored in African and Southeast Asian countries, it remains vastly understudied in Latin American contexts. We investigate socio-cultural factors contributing to breastfeeding cessation in rural high-altitude populations of the Peruvian Andes. The role of socio- cultural factors in the local explanatory model of child diarrhoea, and whether these perceptions were integrated in the local healthcare system were assessed.
METHODS: Within the framework of a randomised

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a common and preventable cause of premature heart attack but in most nations only a small proportion of FH-positive individuals have been identified. The aim of this study was to estimate the time to close this FH detection gap.
METHODS: We developed a model to estimate the time to identify different proportions of FH in the population for three identification strategies (i) Cascade Testing (FH-mutation testing in relatives of someone with an FH mutation) (ii) Child-parent Screening (testing children for cholesterol and FH mutations

We investigate the impact of a large-scale social protection scheme, the Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) in Ethiopia, on child nutritional outcomes. Children living in households that receive cash transfers should experience improved child nutrition. However, in the case of the PSNP, which for the majority of participants is a public works program, there are several potential threats to finding effects: first, without conditionality on child inputs, increased household income may not be translated into improved child nutrition. Second, the work requirement may impact on parental time, chi

BACKGROUND: In 2006 the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Perinatal Deaths was extended to pilot a collection of child deaths. This helped optimise data collection for local safeguarding children's boards, which, since April 2008, have a statutory responsibility to review all child deaths. Reviewing primary care records may highlight areas in which systems, skills, and care could be improved.
AIM: To review the role and quality of primary care in child deaths.
DESIGN OF STUDY: Confidential enquiry into child deaths.
SETTING: Five regions of the UK: North-East, South-West and West Midla

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of clinician-reported delivery of counseling for avoidance of child environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure and tobacco use at periodic well-child visits and at illness visits for asthma and otitis media (OM).
METHODS: Combined data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and the outpatient portion of the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 1997 to 1999 were analyzed. The frequency of pediatric visits (<or=18 years) that included clinician-reported counseling for tobacco use/exposure prevention was assessed. Diagnosis-specific v

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: On the basis of a retrospective review of medical records, all patients consecutively diagnosed with PBC or HCV infection between 1999 and 2011 and who had a regular follow-up of at least 3 years were included in the study. Clinical characteristics, especially the severity of cirrhosis, were analyzed in PBC patients with HCV infection (PBC-HCV), PBC patients without HCV infection (PBC-only), and patients with only HCV in

This study focused on gender differences in the prediction of adult intimate partner violence (IPV) by subtypes of child abuse and children's exposure to IPV. Latent classes of adult IPV consisted of a no violence (20.3%), a psychological violence only (46.2%), a psychological and sexual violence (9.2%), a multitype violence and intimidation (6.8%), and a psychological and physical violence with low intimidation class (17.5%). Physical-emotional child abuse and domestic violence exposure predicted a higher likelihood of multitype violence for males. Sexual abuse predicted a higher likelihood o
