OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) with optical coherence tomography (OCT) among patients with alcohol and tobacco use disorder.
METHODS: This study included 29 patients and 29 age and gender-matched healthy participants without alcohol dependency. The patients underwent full ophthalmologic examination including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, anterior segment and fundus examinations, and RNFL measurements taken with spectral-domain OCT. The RNFL values of the two groups were compared with each other.

Calcium-channel blockers have long been employed in coronary disease, and recent investigations have indicated their efficacy in improving the visual field in low-tension glaucoma or presumed vasospasm, possibly by enhancing ocular circulation. Reliable measures of optic nerve status are important parameters for epidemiologic and clinical studies of glaucoma. Anterior optic nerve blood flow was measured in 9 patients with unilateral neurogenic optic atrophy. The noninvasive techniques of reflectometry and laser Doppler detected a decrease in capillary blood flow of the affected eyes as compared with the control fellow eyes as compared with the control fellow eyes (p less than 0.002) that averaged about 64% +/- 14%. Experimental chronic glaucoma was produced in primate eyes and quantitative measurements were made of the capillary area in the optic nerve head. The percent of the nerve head occupied by capillaries remained normal despite considerable loss of disc tissue as glaucomatous excavation proceeded. Frequently relapsing acute bilateral uveitis, retinitis and papillitis were observed in a young male smoker. Long-term therapy with azathioprine (150 mg/day), fluocortolone (15 mg every other day) and phenprocumarol proved to be the only means of suppressing the ocular symptoms and achieving a relatively steady condition. Simultaneously relapsing thrombophlebitis of the lower extremities indicated that thrombangiitis obliterans might be the basic disease. The ophthalmic literature on this condition is critically reviewed.

Non-corneal ERGs, recorded from infraorbital skin electrodes to flash stimulation and mid-occipital and parasagittal VERs to both flash stimulation and pattern reversal were performed in 26 patients with optic disc drusen. Peripapillary staphyloma is a rare, nonhereditary, congenital anomaly in which an excavation surrounds the optic disk. We present 2 cases of peripapillary staphylomas resembling cystic cavities, both of which caused severe visual impairment. We propose the term cystic peripapillary staphyloma to describe this anomaly. The first case was associated with microphthalmia; the second, with encephalocele and Chiari malformation, an association that has not been previously described. We propose the term "cystic peripapillary staphyloma" to describe this anomaly.
