Multidrug-resistant organism carriage in children admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit of a Greek tertiary hospital: prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is a global public health threat. Colonization with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) often precedes infection and promotes transmission. However, data in pediatric populations remain limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MDRO carriage among children admitted from the community to a Greek Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and to explore associated risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of children aged 0-16 years admitted to the PICU was conducted from January 1st to June 30th, 2024, excluding those hospitalized > 48 h or

The Role of 3D/4D Transperineal Ultrasound in Risk Stratification for Pelvic Organ Prolapse Recurrence: Native Tissue Versus Mesh Repair.

Background/Objectives: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) management requires precise patient selection for surgical techniques to balance clinical efficacy and safety. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the role of preoperative 3D/4D transperineal ultrasound in the risk stratification of POP recurrence. We analyzed the impact of levator ani muscle (LAM) injuries, specifically avulsion and ballooning, as identified by ultrasound, on both anatomical and subjective success rates, comparing native tissue repair versus mesh-augmented surgery. Methods: A prospective, multicenter observational s

Hierarchical organ aging signatures from routine abdominal CT add incremental disease risk stratification beyond blood biomarkers.

Biological aging is heterogeneous across organ systems, yet whether CT-derived abdominal aging provides prognostic value beyond routine clinical data - and whether organ decomposition adds beyond a unified estimate - remains untested. We developed and evaluated organ-specific and ensemble biological age models from radiomic features across five abdominal organs in 68,682 CT scans from 32,882 subjects, evaluated on alignment with chronological age of healthy subjects (nested cross validation: MAE=3.68 years, R2=0.90). Age-interaction analyses showed attenuation of relative BAG-disease associati

Pelvic Organ Prolapse with an Emphasis on the Central Compartment: From Genetic Risk Factors and Biomarkers to Contemporary Sacropexy and Emerging Robotic Innovations.

Apical pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is characterized by descent of the uterus or post-hysterectomy vaginal vault resulting from failure of level I pelvic support and represents a major contributor to pelvic floor dysfunction and recurrent prolapse surgery. Loss of apical support is frequently associated with anterior and posterior compartment defects, leading to vaginal bulge symptoms, pelvic pressure, urinary and bowel dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, and reduced quality of life. This narrative review summarizes current knowledge on POP, from molecular mechanisms and emerging biomarkers to con

Toxicity of 0.5 - 5 kDa disinfection byproducts: a total organic halogen-based normalization reveals overlooked risks in disinfected waters.

Disinfection of drinking water inevitably generates halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), yet it remains unclear whether observed toxicity differences across molecular weight (MW) fractions reflect concentration load effects or intrinsic toxic potency. Here, we employed systematic MW fractionation (six fractions from < 0.5 to 10 kDa) combined with Chinese hamster ovary cell cytotoxicity testing and total organic halogen (TOX) normalization to decouple these factors. While the < 0.5 kDa fraction dominated overall cytotoxicity due to its high DBP concentration, TOX-normalized analysis reve

Distribution of Causative Organisms in Infective Endocarditis and Their Associated Mortality Risk: A Single-Centre Study From North Wales, United Kingdom.

Background Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening infection of the endocardial surface, most commonly affecting native or prosthetic valves and intracardiac devices. Despite advancements in diagnosis and treatment, IE continues to carry a high mortality risk. Blood cultures remain a cornerstone of diagnosis, typically yielding positive results and enabling identification of the causative organisms. Staphylococcus aureus is now recognised as the most prevalent pathogen, particularly in healthcare-associated and intravenous drug use-related cases, and is associated with worse outcomes

Proteomic organ-specific ageing signatures and 20-year risk of age-related diseases: the Whitehall II observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Biological ageing is known to vary among different organs within an individual, but the extent to which advanced ageing of specific organs increases the risk of age-related diseases in the same and other organs remains poorly understood. METHODS: In this observational cohort study, to assess the biological age of an individual's organs relative to those of same-aged peers, ie, organ age gaps, we collected plasma samples from 6235 middle-aged (age 45-69 years) participants of the Whitehall II prospective cohort study in London, UK, in 1997-99. Age gaps of nine organs were determine

The Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Hepatitis E Virus Infection in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients in a Highly Endemic Area of Italy.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection can become chronic in immunocompromised patients, like solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs). We evaluated HEV prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes among SOTRs in a hyperendemic HEV area. Three hundred SOTRs were enrolled from April to July 2019 and tested for anti-HEV IgM and IgG and HEV RNA. Sixty-three recipients (21%) were positive for any HEV marker. HEV infection was independently associated with older age and pork liver sausage consumption. Three viremic recipients harbored genotype 3e and 3f according to HEV RNA sequencing and phylogenetic analys

Enhancing arsenate metabolism in Microcystis aeruginosa and relieving risks of arsenite and microcystins by nano-Fe2O3 under dissolved organic phosphorus conditions.

Little information is available on how nano-Fe2O3 substituted iron ions as a possible iron source impacting on algal growth and arsenate (As(V)) metabolism under dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) (D-glucose-6-phosphate (GP)) conditions. We investigated the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa and As(V) metabolism together with their metabolites in As(V) aquatic environments with nano-Fe2O3 and GP as the sole iron and P sources, respectively. Results showed that nano-Fe2O3 showed inhibitory effects on M. aeruginosa growth and microcystin (MCs) release under GP conditions in As(V) polluted water. T
