Mandibular second molar eruption difficulties related to the maintenance of arch perimeter in the mixed dentition.

INTRODUCTION: In this prospective longitudinal study, we compared the prevalence of mandibular second molar eruption difficulties in patients treated with appliances to maintain mandibular arch perimeter. Other independent variables (age, molar angulation, space-width ratio, treatment time, and sex) were tested for their value as predictors of eruption difficulty. METHODS: Three hundred one patients and subjects were divided into 4 groups: patients treated with a Schwarz appliance, patients treated with a mandibular lingual holding arch, patients treated with a combination of both appliances,

Assessment of the etiologic factors of gingival recession in a group of patients in northwest iran.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gingival recession (GR), a common problem in periodontium, is associated with various etiologic factors. There is controversy over the role and importance of these factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the etiologic factors of GR in a group of subjects in Northwest Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, patients referring to a university clinic (123 patients with GR and 123 patients without GR) were evaluated. Patients were examined by an experienced periodontist. A checklist assessing the history of systemic disease, smoking, radiotherapy, orth

Moulding of the generate to control open bite during mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

Distraction osteogenesis of the craniofacial skeleton has become a widely accepted, safe, and effective means of craniofacial reconstructive surgery. Despite excellent results in general, there are still some uncertainties related to the procedure, such as development of an anterior open bite (AOB) during mandibular distraction. The aim of this study was to examine whether 'moulding of the generate', i.e. use of intermaxillary elastics during the active distraction phase is possible to close the mandibular plane angle and open bite. Three subjects, 13- and 15-year-old males and a 7-year-old fe

Care of adolescents with cleft lip and palate: the role of the general dental practitioner.

Management of the adolescent with cleft lip and/or palate is ideally undertaken by a cleft palate team which has overseen care since birth, and which provides, in a paediatric hospital setting, the specialist medical, dental and ancillary care services necessary for optimal management. However, in some countries such a team is not available and individual dental practitioners and dental specialists have to undertake the necessary treatment. This is facilitated in Australia by the Federal Government's 'Cleft Lip and Palate Scheme', which subsidizes all medical and dental treatment related to th

Bilateral congenital absence of maxillary lateral incisors: a craniofacial and dental cast analysis.

The dental casts and cephalometric records of forty-three patients exhibiting bilateral congenital absence of maxillary lateral incisors were evaluated to determine the nature and extent of any concurrent craniofacial and dental anomalies. The effects of bilateral orthodontic space closure were evaluated on a subsample of twenty-two cases. The data revealed normal dental arch length, arch width, overjet, and overbite, while significant tooth size discrepancies were found in several anterior and posterior teeth. Craniofacial deviations from normal included smaller maxillary length, smaller mand

Semaphorin 3A protects against alveolar bone loss during orthodontic tooth movement in mice with periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of local semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) administration on alveolar bone loss during OTM in a mouse model of periodontitis. BACKGROUND: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) for patients with periodontal disease is known to increase the risk of exacerbating alveolar bone loss due to inflammation of the periodontal tissue. However, its mechanism of action and prevention remains unclear. METHODS: Mice (male 7-8 weeks old, C57BL/6J, n = 12) were divided into six groups: untreated group (control), without OTM and recovered from induced periodontitis (RP), with OTM

Dental mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes for oral diseases: Classification, functionalization and clinical prospects.

The conventional therapeutic approaches for oral diseases primarily encompass dental restoration, pulp therapy, and maxillofacial surgical interventions. However, these methods are difficult to promote tissue regeneration and immune regulation. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-Exos), mainly derived from tissues such as bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, umbilical cord, placenta, and fat, have been used to study the treatment of oral diseases. Conventional MSCs-Exos have relatively low immunogenicity and ethical issues, but exosomes derived from dental mesenchymal stem cells (DSCs) n

Difference in Bone Density in Young Women With Normal Occlusion and Malocclusion.

Introduction Acquisition of higher peak bone mass in young women may prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. Many factors, including nutritional intake, influence peak bone mass. The masticatory ability associated with nutritional intake may be lower in young women with malocclusion than in those with normal occlusion. We investigated the difference in bone mineral density (BMD) and nutritional intake between younger women with normal occlusion and malocclusion. Methods This study involved 45 women (mean age, 20.8 years) with normal occlusion and 49 women (mean age, 21.3 years) with malocclusion.
