Eagle's syndrome: a review of the literature.

Eagle's syndrome represents symptoms brought on by compression of regional structures by elongation of the styloid process or ossification of the stylohyoid or stylomandibular ligaments. Watt Eagle described it for the first time in 1937, dividing it into two subtypes: the "classic syndrome" and the "stylo-carotid artery syndrome." Many theories have been put forth regarding its pathogenesis. Depending on the underlying pathogenetic mechanism and the anatomical structures compressed or irritated by the styloid process, symptoms vary greatly, ranging from cervicofacial pain to cerebral ischemia

Curiosa paediatrica X: precocious sternebral fusion.

The few reported cases of precocious sternebral fusion occurring in early childhood appear always to have been associated with other congenital physical abnormalities. The instance presented here was clinically without such association and its precocious appearance cannot be attributed to an aberrant embryological polyvalent induction.

VEGF-D-induced intraosseous lymphangiogenesis drives site-specific heterotopic bone resorption.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a debilitating condition that commonly occurs after musculoskeletal injury and is characterized by the formation of bone in soft tissues. Despite advances in understanding its pathogenesis, effective therapies to reverse established heterotopic bone remain lacking. While lymphatic vessels are associated with the destruction of bone in rare diseases such as Gorham-Stout disease, their effect on HO has not been widely explored. Here, we use transgenic mice to determine whether targeted expression of the lymphatic growth factor VEGF-D can promote the therapeutic r

The submuscular sliding plate technique for acetabular posterior wall fractures extending to the acetabular roof.

There is extension of the Kocher-Langenbeck approach using trochanteric osteotomy for posterior wall fracture extending to acetabular roof, but it exposes to complications such as nonunion, breakage, and heterotopic ossification. The current study introduces a submuscular sliding plate technique. We retrospectively analyzed 13 patients treated with this technique. It is based on conventional method for posterior wall fracture. After reduction of roof fragment with direct visualization, a pre-contoured plate was passed through a submuscular tunnel under the gluteus medius and minimus. A small s

Vascular ossification: Pathology, mechanisms, and clinical implications.

In recent years, the mechanisms and clinical significance of vascular calcification have been increasingly investigated. For over a century, however, pathologists have recognized that vascular calcification is a form of heterotopic ossification. In this review, we aim to describe the pathology and molecular processes of vascular ossification, to characterize its clinical significance and treatment options, and to elucidate areas that require further investigation. The molecular mechanisms of vascular ossification involve the activation of regulators including bone morphogenic proteins and chon

Panniculitis Ossificans in Posterior Knee: An Unusual Presentation.

Panniculitis ossificans (PO) is a heterotopic ossification, benign recurring lesion, presenting in a variety of presentations anywhere in the body. The condition can sometimes be mistaken for a malignant bone tumor or long list of other differential diagnoses which have been mentioned in our report and that may lead to unnecessary wrong management. We report a case of a patient with subcutaneous ossification in the posterior aspect of the left knee. PO was confirmed histologically showing subcutaneous fat necrosis associated with osteoid material.

Gunshot Wounds to the Hip: Doomed to Failure?

The purpose is to evaluate hip fractures due to gunshot wounds (GSW) to the hip, which are treated surgically, and the complications. Patients who sustained a low velocity GSW with fracture to the femoral head/neck and intertrochanteric/peritrochantric region at three Level 1 Trauma Centers were eligible. There were 69 patients (63 males-91%), with an average age of 29 (18-60). Nine patients had orthopaedic surgical site infections. There were 6 nonunions, 4 patients with hardware failure, 2 cases of avascular necrosis (AVN), 3 patients with post traumatic arthritis (PTA) and 20 patients with

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva - radiological findings: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva formerly known as Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare hereditary mesodermal disorder. It is characterized by congenital skeletal anomalies and progressive ectopic bone formation in connective tissue, resulting in mature ossification within soft tissues and bridging between osseous structures. It is extremely rare and has an incidence of one in two million people. Usually, it has typical clinical and radiographic features. Here, we present a case of a young patient diagnosed to have an advanced fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. Plain

What Is the Best Surgical Treatment for Ulnar Styloid Impaction Syndrome? - A Systematic Review.

Background: Ulnar styloid triquetrum impaction syndrome (USTI) is a rare cause of ulnar-sided wrist pain resulting from a mechanical conflict between an elongated ulnar styloid and the carpal bones. Despite various surgical options, there is no consensus on the optimal treatment. This study aims to systematically review and synthesise the available literature on the surgical treatment of USTI, focussing on clinical presentation, surgical techniques, outcomes and complications. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Four databases (PubMed, Medline, Emba

The styloid diaphragm: An underrecognized anatomical landmark for transcervical styloidectomy.

The styloid diaphragm (SD) is a band-like anatomical structure located deep to the parotid gland and composed of the styloid process (SP), the styloglossus, stylopharyngeus, and stylohyoid muscles, the stylomandibular and stylohyoid ligaments, and the posterior belly of the digastric muscle. Although the SD may serve as an important anatomical landmark during transcervical styloidectomy, its surgical significance has not been specifically emphasized. We present the surgical anatomy of the SD using schematic illustrations and operative video obtained during transcervical styloidectomy. Through

Eagle syndrome and vascular complications-a systematic review.

Vascular complications occurring in Eagle syndrome are seldom described. The aim of this study was to systematically review the occurrence, characteristics, and management outcomes of vascular complications occurring in Eagle syndrome. A systematic review was conducted with a search in several databases. The research question was "What characterizes Eagle syndrome with vascular complications and how should it be managed?" The initial search yielded 4145 results; 150 of these were included, reporting a total of 231 patients with vascular complications. Arterial impingement (67.5%) was more freq

Stylohyoid Complex (Eagle) Syndrome Starting in a 9-Year-Old Boy.

Background There are only four previous pediatric reports of the glossopharyngeal neuralgic form of the stylohyoid complex syndrome. Stylohyoid complex has merely been described as cases of glossopharyngeal neuralgia in children. Case Report A 12-year-old boy came to our hospital because of recurrent episodes of severe cranial pain (9/10) lasting for 5 to 15 minutes. Pain affected the right tonsillar fossa, ear, and mastoid region. Since the start at the age of 9 years, the frequency of painful episodes has progressively increased: when admitted to our clinics 3 years later, the child was havi

Ossifying renal tumor of infancy (ORTI): a case report and review of the literature.

We present the case of a 6-month-old boy who was referred to us with the chief complaint of intermittent painless gross hematuria. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen showed a partially calcified soft-tissue mass that was located in the lower pole of the right kidney and extended into the collecting system. Consequently, a partial nephrectomy was performed. The resected specimen showed that the tumor was partially calcified and occupied the renal pelvis. The histological findings suggested a diagnosis of ossifying renal tumor of infancy (ORTI), only 16 cases of which have been reporte

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: clinical features and pathogenic mechanisms.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a systemic condition characterized by the ossification and calcification of ligaments and entheses. DISH is observed on all continents and in all races, but most commonly in men over 50 years of age. Although DISH is asymptomatic in most individuals, the condition is often an indicator of underlying metabolic disease, and the presence of spinal or extraspinal ossifications can sometimes lead to symptoms including pain, stiffness, a reduced range of articular motion, and dysphagia, as well as increasing the risk of unstable spinal fractures. New bone formation in axial spondyloarthritis.

New bone formation of the entheses with possible progression to ankylosis is among the hallmarks of axial spondyloarthritis. Radiographic scores are available for evaluating axial new bone formation. The complex systems that underlie new bone formation involve Wnt bone-formation signaling and the natural Wnt inhibitors DKK-1 and sclerostin, as well as growth factors such as the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs); these systems are modulated by proinflammatory cytokines, most notably TNF. Factors that predict progressive new bone formation include the presence of syndesmophytes, various biologi

[Metaplastic ossification in nasal polyp].

Metaplasia is the production by cells of a kind of tissue other than that corresponding to their lineage, ie it represents the conversion of one tissue into another. Bony metaplasia has frequently been described in polyps of the gastrointestinal tract. In nasal polyposis it is an extremely uncommon finding. We describe the case of a 42 year-old female presenting nasal obstruction due to a unilateral nasal tumour. She was operated on by means of endoscopic sinonasal surgery and the definitive diagnosis was nasal polyposis with areas of bony metaplasia.

Ocular ossification. A case report and review of the literature.

The right eye of a 15-year-old boy was removed and found to contain grossly disorganised intraocular tissues, with bone formation. The literature relating to this finding is reviewed. Trauma of an unspecified and undisclosed nature is proposed as the most probable cause. The mechanism by which such trauma might lead to the formation of bone is discussed.
