Continuous Fick cardiac output measurement during exercise by monitoring of mixed venous oxygen saturation and oxygen uptake.

To determine whether continuous Fick cardiac output measurement is applicable to exercise testing, cardiac output data obtained by the continuous Fick method (Qcf) during exercise were compared with data obtained by the thermodilution method (Qth). Seventeen patients with old myocardial infarction underwent a 1-min or 3-min incremental exercise test (protocols 1 and 2, respectively). During exercise, the oxygen consumption (VO2), arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2), and mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) were monitored continuously. Qcf was calculated at 12-s intervals by the Fick equation. T

Effects of hypertonic saline dextran resuscitation on oxygen delivery, oxygen consumption, and lipid peroxidation after burn injury.

We compared the effects of lactated Ringer's (LR) and hypertonic saline dextran (HSD) on postburn cardiovascular function, O2 consumption, lipid peroxidation, and bacterial translocation. Miniature pigs with 40% total body surface area (TBSA), third-degree burns received, 30 minutes postburn, either Parkland resuscitation (LR group, n = 8) or HSD, 10 mL/kg/30 minutes, followed by LR, 4 mL/kg/%burn over the next 23 hours (HSD group, n = 8). The HSD prevented the early decrease in cardiac index (CI); the early increase in the resistance of the systemic, mesenteric, celiac, and renal vascular bed

Measurement of right atrial oxygen saturation by fiberoptic oximetry accurately reflects mixed venous oxygen saturation in swine.

Continuous fiberoptic measurement of mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) via a pulmonary artery catheter is a useful, though invasive, monitoring technique. Continuous right atrial venous oxygen saturation measurement by oximetry offers the potential of a significantly less invasive SvO2 measurement. However, catheter motion, character of the vessel, chamber wall reflection, the filtering technique involved in calculating oxygen saturation, and the streaming of venous blood prior to ventricular mixing may influence the feasibility of continuous right atrial (RA) SvO2 measurement. This study

Role of extracorporeal lung assist in the treatment of acute respiratory failure.

For patients with most severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) conservative treatment with lung protective ventilation is often not sufficient to prevent life-threatening hypoxemia and additional strategies are necessary. Extracorporeal lung assist (ECLA) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) using capillary membrane oxygenators can provide sufficient gas exchange and lung rest. In 2 randomized trials mortality was unchanged for ECMO. Today an technically enhanced ECMO is used for most severe ARDS using clinical algorithm and different case studies demonstrated a survival rat…

Postnatal follow-up of the oxygenation index, arterial to alveolar oxygen tension ratio and alveolar arterial oxygen tension difference values in neonates with the respiratory distress syndrome treated with conventional ventilatory support.

Recent development of sophisticated intensive care technique for use in newborn infants with the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) has resulted in changes in the therapeutic strategies and moved the problem of neonatal survival into the realm of new therapeutic realities. At present, the mechanical ventilation methods form an integral part of the intensive care strategy of infants with RDS. They have come to the forefront of infant care because of their successful use in ventilatory support and children survival where other therapeutic modalities have failed. The present prospective observat

Consistent differences in tissue oxygen levels across 15 insect species reflect a balance between oxygen supply and demand and highlight a hitherto unknown adaptation for extracting sufficient oxygen from water.

Animals, including insects, need oxygen for aerobic respiration and eventually asphyxiate without it. Aerobic respiration, however, produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), which contribute to dysfunction and aging. Animals appear to balance risks of asphyxiation and ROS by regulating internal oxygen relatively low and stable, but sufficient levels. How much do levels vary among species, and how does variation depend on environment and life history? We predicted that lower internal oxygen levels occur in insects with either limited access to environmental oxygen (i.e., insects dependent on aqua

Oxygen-enhanced MRI in patients with uterine cervical carcinoma: feasibility and treatment-associated changes in tumour oxygen-enhanced response.

PURPOSE: Tumour hypoxia causes resistance against radiotherapy and chemotherapy in locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC). Non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarkers have the potential to guide hypoxia-targeted therapy but require technical development and validation. This study evaluated the feasibility and early treatment response monitoring capabilities of oxygen-enhanced MRI (OE-MRI) in healthy female volunteers and patients with LACC. METHODS: Healthy volunteers underwent OE-MRI to demonstrate the feasibility of the technique and to compare the onset, magnitude, and durati

Acid-Resistant High-Entropy Alloy Electrocatalysts: Unlocking Durable Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance.

Increasing global energy demands, fossil fuel depletion and rising carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have made it critical to look for sustainable energy sources. In this regard, proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) and fuel cells (PEMFCs) have gained importance. While PEM systems offer superior operational current density and load flexibility compared to alkaline electrolysis, their performance is limited by slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Achieving high efficiency in acidic environments demands electrocatalysts, capable o

Oxygen diffusion kinetics, buffering capacity and phenotype: A narrative review of oxygen physiology and later phenotype in very preterm infants.

Clinicians often view exposure to supplementary oxygen in preterm infants as a simple reciprocal trade-off between mortality and the risk of vision-threatening retinopathy, but this perspective oversimplifies the underlying physiology. Oxygen moves through a series of spatially distinct compartments without intrinsic regulation, with Fick's law governing the entire process. We suggest that retinopathy of prematurity and cerebral palsy represent opposite ends of a shared continuum of oxygen diffusion injury. Several physiological concepts define this risk matrix. The spatial critical threshold

[Therapeutic switch from liquid oxygen to oxygen concentrators in the Turin City Local Health Authority: results of the COMBO Project.].

In patients with chronic respiratory failure and a stable oxygen requirement ≤4 L/min, switching from liquid oxygen to oxygen concentrators represents a potential strategy to optimize home oxygen therapy, although structured real-world experiences remain limited. This study describes the experience of the COMBO Project implemented by the Turin City Local Health Authority, aimed at the planned implementation of a therapeutic switch from liquid oxygen to oxygen concentrators and the assessment of its organizational and management outcomes. A retrospective descriptive-comparative observational st

Can Oxygen Induced Vasomotion Be Harnessed in Traumatic Brain Injury? A Narrative Review of the Relationship Between Oxygenation and Intracranial Pressure.

The role of cerebral autoregulation in the management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is of increasing interest. Though oxygen is potently vasoactive, its role in autoregulation is under-appreciated despite the importance of brain oxygen monitoring and pervasive availability of supplemental oxygen in clinical environments. This narrative review intends to provide historical scientific context for oxygen-driven cerebral autoregulation-hereby termed oxygenic autoregulation-and its therapeutic potential, particularly during intracranial pressure (ICP) crises. A review of original research from 19

FlexO2: A patient-controlled oxygen flow selector improving autonomy and daily function in long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT).

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory insufficiency associated with severe resting hypoxemia necessitates long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT), yet existing devices often impede daily activities due to cumbersome flow adjustments, increasing reliance on caregivers. FlexO2 is a novel mechanical regulator that enables switching between preset oxygen flow rates for rest and activity. This proof-of-concept study evaluated its impact on patient autonomy, physical activity, and quality of life. METHODS: In a consecutive, non-randomized pre-post intervention proof-of-concept study at Karolinska University Hosp

Prognostic accuracy of oxygen debt for mortality in patients undergoing venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiogenic shock is associated with high mortality. Prognostic scales, such as Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II), and Survival After Venoarterial ECMO (SAVE), have been used to estimate mortality risk or survival probability. However, their performance remains limited in the context of Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VA-ECMO) therapy. This study aimed to validate oxygen debt (DEOx) as a predictor of 28-day mortality in critically ill patients receiving VA-ECMO and to compare its prognostic ac

The application of partial pressure of oxygen adjusted indirect Fick method in vasoreactivity testing by inhaling oxygen in congenital heart disease.

The influence of partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) is often overlooked during vasoreactivity testing by inhaling oxygen in congenital heart diseases (CHD). This study aims to evaluate the influence of pO2 on hemodynamic data. Patients with simple CHDs and suspected pulmonary arterial hypertension undergoing right heart catheterization including vasoreactivity testing by inhaling O2 were consecutively enrolled from June 2023 to March 2025. Patients with an arterial O2 saturation below 98% after inhaling O2 were excluded. Cardiac output was calculated using indirect Fick method, where blood O2 co

Automated Oxygen Delivery in Home Setting for Patients with COPD on Long-Term Oxygen Therapy - A Randomized Crossover Feasibility Trial.

The enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) histone methyltransferase inhibitors tazemetostat and valemetostat recently have received approval for clinical use in follicular lymphoma and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, respectively. In follicular lymphoma, the expression of activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) is responsible for increased mutational signatures and genomic instability. Because EZH2 inhibitors induce epigenetic and transcriptional changes in normal and lymphoma B cells, we studied whether these inhibitors could alter the pattern of AID-mediated chromosomal translocations. Addition of Mask to High-flow Nasal Oxygen: A Strategy to Improve Oxygenation in Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure Secondary to COVID-19.

PURPOSE: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNO) reduces the need for invasive mechanical ventilation in COVID-19 patients with hypoxemic-respiratory failure. During HFNO entrainment of room air dilutes the delivered fractional inspiratory oxygen (FiO2), thereby preventing improvement in oxygenation. The placement of a mask over HFNO to improve oxygenation has provided conflicting results. We aimed to determine and compare the effect of placing various mask types over HFNO on oxygen saturation (SPO2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective physiological study 40 patients with COVID-19-associated h
