BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) that emerged in late 2019, and later become a global pandemic, has unleashed an almost unprecedented global public health and economic crisis.
OBJECTIVE: In this perspective, we examine the effects of COVID-19 and identify a likely 'new normal' in terms of challenges and opportunities within the fields of disability, telework, and rehabilitation.
METHODS: We use a systems thinking lens informed by recent empirical evidence and peer-reviewed qualitative accounts regarding the pandemic to identify emerging challenges, and pinpoint opportunities rela

To provide vaccination against infection due to 2009 pandemic influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (A[H1N1]pdm09) to resource-constrained countrie … y of adverse events were consistent with those recorded after other inactivated influenza vaccines. Pandemic preparedness plans will need to include strategies to ensure more-rapid procedures to identify vaccine supplies and distribute and import vaccines to countries that may bear the brunt of a future pandemic.

Background: Inspired by intense challenges encountered by patients and clinicians, we examined the experiences of living with sarcoidosis in three of the hardest impacted English-speaking cities during the early COVID-19 pandemic: London, New Orleans, and New York. Methods: A multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team including 6 patient leaders conducted qualitative investigations with analyses rooted in grounded theory. Recruitment occurred by self-referral through patient advocacy groups. Results: A total of 28 people living with sarcoidosis participated. The majority of patients had

2018 marks the 100-year anniversary of the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed ~50 million people worldwide. The severity of this pandemic resulted from a complex interplay between viral, host, and societal factors. Here, we review the viral, genetic and immune factors that contributed to the severity of the 1918 pandemic and discuss the implications for modern pandemic preparedness. We address unresolved questions of why the 1918 influenza H1N1 virus was more virulent than other influenza pandemics and why some people survived the 1918 pandemic and others succumbed to the infection. While c…

INTRODUCTION: There are concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated oral care inequities globally. In Sweden, declines in oral care utilization, particularly among certain regions and public clinics, suggest disproportionate impacts across population groups. Yet, the effects of the pandemic on oral care equity in Sweden remain unexplored, highlighting a critical gap in evidence to guide ongoing equity initiatives and strengthen future pandemic preparedness.
OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in unmet oral care needs (UOCNs) inequities among Swedish adults before and during the pandemic, follow…

OBJECTIVE: The pre-analytical phase is the stage at which laboratory errors most frequently occur and is therefore of critical importance for patient safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the marked increase in workload, organizational restructuring, staff and resource redeployment, changes in patient volume and clinical workflows, and disease-related pathophysiological alterations affecting specimen characteristics created unprecedented conditions that could influence laboratory quality indicators. This study aimed to characterize changes in specimen rejection rates across the pre-pandemic, p

Background: The 100 Days Mission has reorganised preparedness around vaccine development speed. Modelling suggests that meeting its target during the COVID-19 pandemic could have averted more than eight million deaths, conditional on equitable distribution. Distribution depends on a national pathway from authorisation through financing, cold chain, targeting, delivery, monitoring and community trust. The Mission measures speed at only one end of this system. Objective: To develop and apply a country-anchored framework for the deployment-readiness layer of preparedness. Methods: We conducted a

BACKGROUND: Continuity of education (CoE) is a growing area of interest in health professions education, both for its impacts on learning (continuity of curriculum and continuity of supervision; CoS) and for its influence on patient care (continuity of patient care; CoPC). The COVID-19 pandemic offered an opportunity to examine discontinuity of education and the potential impacts of interruption to CoE, a knowledge gap in medical education research.
METHODS: We conducted 14 semi-structured qualitative interviews involving participants from a Canadian family medicine programme. We recorded and

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the daily lives of people and communities. The physical and mental health, financial and social effects of the pandemic, and the subsequent cost-of-living crisis has furthered existing inequalities. The pre-pandemic precarity of finances and social capital among the most vulnerable communities, has led to an exacerbation of poorer health and greater anxiety. The aim of this study was to explore how individuals, voluntary organisations and employers experienced the pandemic, and how they adapted to the changing situation and their potentia

BACKGROUNDThe COVID-19 pandemic has challenged efforts to optimise rational antibacterial use due to uncertainties in treatment protocols.AIMWe investigated the impact of COVID-19 on hospital antibacterial consumption in Belgium from 2017 to 2022, relative to the general and hospitalised population.METHODSWe analysed national reimbursement data using defined daily doses (DDD) and three metrics: DDD/1,000 inhabitants/day (DID), DDD/1,000 patient days (PD) and DDD/1,000 admissions. We performed linear regressions to analyse 6-year trends (2017-2022) and estimated predicted consumption from 2020

BACKGROUND: Understanding how hospitals functioned during the 2009 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 pandemic may improve future public health emergency response, but information about its impact on US hospitals remains largely unknown.
RESEARCH DESIGN: We matched hospital and emergency department (ED) discharge data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project with community-level influenza-like illness activity during each hospital's pandemic period in fall 2009 compared with a corresponding calendar baseline period. We compared inpatient mortality

The Regional Disaster Health Response System (RDHRS) first began in 2018 as a demonstration project designed to address persistent healthcare emergency preparedness and response challenges in the United States. Four RDHRS programs currently exist, aligning and improving healthcare disaster response plans and clinical capabilities across 24 of the 50 US states. They connect public and private partners across the healthcare continuum, ensuring healthcare systems are better prepared for the next catastrophic disaster impacting health systems and the communities they serve. To achieve infectivity, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for COVID-19, must first traverse the upper respiratory tract mucosal barrier. Once infection is established, the cascading complexities of the pathophysiology of COVID-19 makes intervention extremely difficult. Thus, enhancing the defensive properties of the mucosal linings of the upper respiratory tract may reduce infection by SARS-CoV-2 and indeed by other viruses such as influenza, which have been responsible for the two major pandemics of the last century. In this review we summaris

Effective surveillance for epidemic-prone viral diseases is essential for emergency preparedness to respond to threats and occurrences of pandemics. While it is difficult and expensive to conduct health facility-based surveillance, there is a growing interest in conducting sewage-based epidemiological studies to monitor the health of the urban population because of the relative ease of sample collection and the availability of advanced molecular techniques for the detection of pathogens in the sewage. Sewage samples offer unique means to study the aggregate health of the population as opposed

Since the first case of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Taiwan was identified in March 2003, viral respiratory infections, in particular the influenza virus, have become a national public health concern. Taiwan would face a serious threat of public health problems if another SARS epidemic overlapped with a flu outbreak. After SARS, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control accelerated and strengthened domestic research on influenza and expanded the exchange of information with international counterparts. The capacity of influenza A to cross species barriers presents a potential threat
