BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on non-COVID-19 deaths in Mexico.
METHODS: This study analyzes monthly administrative data on 15 different causes of death in Mexico from 2017 to 2020. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on non-COVID-19 deaths are conducted using a difference-in-differences methodology and an event study.
RESULTS: The evidence shows mixed results. There is an increase in six causes of death: diabetes (36.8%), hypertension (25.8%), heart attacks (40.9%), bronchitis- asthma (24.2%), anemia (28.6%) and prostate cancer (21.4%). There

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic demonstrated how rapidly vaccines and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) could be deployed when the field is prepared to respond to a novel virus, serving as proof of concept that the prototype pathogen approach is feasible. This success was built upon decades of foundational research, including the characterization of protective antigens and coronavirus immunity leading to the development and validation of a generalizable vaccine approach for multiple coronaviruses. For other virus families of pandemic concern, the field is less prepared. The article

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted daily activity rhythms and life routines with people adjusting to new work schedules, exercise routines, and other everyday life activities. This study examines temporal changes in daily activity rhythms and routines during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing disproportionate changes among working adult subgroups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In June 2021, we conducted a year-long study to collect high-resolution fitness tracker data and questionnaire responses from 128 working adults. Questionnaire data were analyzed to explore changes in

BACKGROUND: The acute respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread rapidly worldwide yet has not been eliminated. The infection is especially deadly in vulnerable populations. The current studies indicate that pregnant women are at greater risk of getting seriously ill. Even though fetuses protect against disease, the additional finding showed that the COVID-19 pandemic could increase fetal and maternal morbidities. In a situation where COVID-19 and new strains of the virus are still not controlled, scientists predicted that the world might experience another pandemic. C

Patients with respiratory viral infections are more likely to develop co-infections leading to increased fatality. Mucormycosis is an epidemic amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that conveys a 'double threat' to the global health fraternity. Mucormycosis is caused by the Mucorales group of fungi and exhibits acute angioinvasion generally in immunocompromised patients. The most familiar foci of infections are sinuses (39%), lungs (24%), and skin tissues (19%) where the overall dissemination occurs in 23% of cases. The mortality rate in the case of disseminated mucormycosis is found to be 96%. Symptom

The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on endometriosis (EM) is currently unclear. Here, we aimed to describe the potential influence of COVID-19 on the pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, and treatment of EM. The cytokine storm caused by COVID-19 may induce the occurrence and progression of EM, and immunosuppression of COVID-19 may help the ectopic endometrium escape from immune clearance. Consequently, the forced social isolation and the cancelation of non-emergency medical treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic aggravate anxiety and psychological pressure, which can aggravate the sy

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by an infection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is rapidly becoming a worldwide epidemic and poses a significant threat to human life and health. SARS-CoV-2 can cause damage to organs throughout the body through ACE2 receptors. It may have direct and indirect effects on osteoclasts, and osteoblasts and lead to osteoporosis. Vitamin D (VitD) is a key hormone for bone health and has immunomodulatory actions of relevance in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Vitamin D deficiency has a significant positive ass

Currently, the world is facing the emergence of a virus that causes pneumonia in humans, which has a higher probability of causing complications, including respiratory distress syndrome and death. The new coronavirus 2019 (2019-nCoV), which is currently known as SARS-CoV-2, is the cause of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This virus was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China, and appears to have been a zoonotic infection that has now adapted to humans. On March 11, 2020, COVID-19 was announced as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), causing widespread panic worl

The global crisis generated by COVID-19 has heightened awareness of pandemic outbreaks. From a public health preparedness standpoint, it is … lity rates and non-pharmaceutical interventions. I The inclusion of the resilience framework in the pandemics outbreak analysis will enable decision makers to capture the multi dimensional nature of community response.

Objectives: The global response to COVID-19 inherited a long history of preparedness features pertaining to various threats, including bioterrorism, (re)-emerging infectious diseases, and pandemics. We describe the evolution of pandemic preparedness frameworks, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We conducted an integrative literature review of publicly available documents, including grey and scientific literature, on pandemic preparedness frameworks. We relied on social science literature as a main source and used search keywords: pandemic preparedness, H1N1, COVID-19, "whole-of-…

OBJECTIVE: To explore the literature on corona-associated mucormycosis and explain its relevance to dentists and oral surgeons.
METHODS: A literature search was carried out to identify reported cases on corona-associated mucormycosis since the start of COVID-19 pandemic.
RESULTS: A review of literature identified 265 published papers on CAM between March 2020 and September 2021. Careful screening of abstracts and full texts revealed 29 studies reporting case series of CAM and, 27 case reports on CAM.
CONCLUSIONS: A multitude of factors may be responsible for the alarming rise in the inciden

Background In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic-induced social restrictions, including face masks, on patients with hearing problems. Methodology This cross-sectional survey study was conducted in an ENT tertiary care center. After signing the consent form, we invited study subjects with hearing disabilities who were using unilateral or bilateral hearing aids to participate in filling out the study survey. The study questionnaire was completed by 80 subjects. The questionnaire included various questions about the respondent's dem

While the development of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines was rapid, time to development and implementation challenges remain that may impact the response to future pandemics. Trained immunity via bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination (an antigen agnostic strategy) offers a potential intervention against future novel pathogens via an existing, safe, and widely distributed vaccine to protect vulnerable populations and preserve health system capacity while targeted vaccines are developed and implemented.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and associated practice shifts on consultation and referral patterns of an intimate partner violence program at a large, urban children's hospital.
METHODS: Secondary data analyses examined COVID-19-related variations in patterns of consultations and referrals in the 11 months before the COVID-19 pandemic (April 1, 2019-February 29, 2020) and those after its emergence (April 1, 2020-February 28, 2021). χ2 analyses were used to examine differences in categorical outcomes of interest by time and practice set
