The course of primary infection with a hamster-adapted strain of Ancylostoma ceylanicum was studied in inbred DSN and randomly bred WO/GD and WO/CR hamsters. Infective larvae were administered orally and began to develop in the small intestine without embarking on a tissue migration. Only the occasional larva was detected in other organ sites. It was concluded that the developing larvae moulted on days 3-4 and again to the pre-adult stage about 9-11 days post-infection. Worm burdens in infected hamsters were stable for at least 11 weeks after infection. There was no sudden expulsive phase and

An epidemiological survey of human faeces collected from open places in native quarters and from volunteers in modern housing areas was conducted so as to ascertain the intestinal helminth infections in Ibadan a town in South Western Nigeria. Out of four hundred and seventy eight stool samples examined between February 1980 and January 1981 in twenty nine localities grouped into 7 zones, Ascaris (Round worm) Trichuris (Whip worm) and hookworm were most prevalent. Ascaris and hookworms were three times as prevalent in native areas as in modern quarters. Two local dispensary records confirmed ma

Studies on the development and egg production of Capillaria hepatica and on the macroscopically visible alterations of the liver and spleen of the host were carried out in experimentally infected Mastomys natalensis. Following the oral administration of infective eggs the first stage larvae hatched in the caecum of fasting and fed animals after about 8 and 15 hours respectively. The prepatency could be found with 20 days. The dynamics and duration of egg production of the parasite proved to be dependent on the infective dose. After the first week of patency increasing numbers of eggs/liver wer

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of interleukin 12 (IL-12) during Strongyloides venezuelensis infection. IL-12(-/-) and wild-type C57BL/6 mice were subcutaneously infected with 1500 larvae of S. venezuelensis. On days 7, 14, and 21 post-infection, we determined eosinophil and mononuclear cell numbers in the blood and broncoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), Th2 cytokine secretion in the lung parenchyma, and serum antibody levels. The numbers of eggs in the feces and worm parasites in the duodena were also quantified. The eosinophil and mononuclear cell counts and the concentrations

More sensitive methodologies are necessary to improve strongyloidiasis diagnosis. This study compared the sensitivities of the McMaster modified technique and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, both performed in faecal samples. Lewis rats were subcutaneously infected with 4,000, 400 or 40 infective third-stage larvae, considered as high, moderate or low infection, respectively. Seven days later, they were euthanized to count adult nematodes recovered from the small intestine. Stool samples were used to count the number of eggs per gram (EPG) of faeces and to detect parasite DNA by PCR per

Infection with gastrointestinal nematode parasites (GINs) is an important cause of productivity loss on sheep farms in Ontario and worldwide. However, efforts to quantify the effect of GIN infection on growth have demonstrated mixed results. Furthermore, there has been limited investigation of their effect on reproductive performance. This study evaluated the effect of subclinical GIN parasitism on growth and reproductive performance of ewe lambs under Ontario grazing conditions. Rideau cross ewe lambs (n = 140) born in spring 2016 on a farm in central Ontario were followed for two years from

The majority of dairy goat farms in Bavaria operate pasture-based systems. Endoparasites are therefore a common problem affecting health and productivity of these herds. Pooled faecal samples from 37 commercial dairy goat farms in Bavaria were examined by modified McMaster, flotation, sedimentation and Baermann funnel techniques. In addition, a questionnaire was used to gather information on farmers' perceptions and parasite management efforts. The average trichostrongyle faecal egg count across the 37 farms was 620 epg, with a median of 450 epg (1st quartile: 135 epg; 3rd quartile: 930 epg; r

Three groups of five baboons were vaccinated in Kenya using three doses of 10,000 viable cryopreserved schistosomula attenuated with either 10, 20 or 60 krad 60Co-irradiation prepared in England. Animals were vaccinated at four-week intervals, challenged after a further six weeks with 2,000 cercariae and perfused at 10 weeks after challenge. High antibody titres to schistosomula mediating in vitro cytoadherence with P 388D1 macrophage-like cells were demonstrated in all vaccinated animals but not in controls. Significant titres to soluble egg antigen (SEA) were also demonstrated by ELISA in th

Twelve horses were divided into three groups and given various doses of a mixed species strongyle inoculum, representing light, moderate, and heavy infections. Three weeks after the larval inoculations, three animals from each group were given larvicidal doses of thiabendazole (TBZ) (440 mg kg-1 on two consecutive days); one animal from each group served as a non-medicated control. Treatment was repeated three weeks later. One treated animal from each group was designated for long-term study; others were necropsied to study adult and larval parasite loads. Six of the twelve animals with strong

Schistosomiasis is a neglected chronic parasitic disease with a significant lasting morbidity. Currently, praziquantel (PZQ) is the most efficient drug for schistosomiasis worldwide. However, the possibility of the occurrence of resistance to PZQ is increasing. Therefore, there is a vital need to find new antischistosomal drugs or to increase the efficacy of the existing ones. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor which is reported to have antiparasitic properties. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the potential therapeutic effects of omeprazole in experimental Schistosoma mansoni infe

Identifying factors that drive among-individual variation in mixed parasitic infections is fundamental to understanding the ecology and evolution of host–parasite interactions. However, a lack of non-invasive diagnostic tools to quantify mixed infections has restricted their investigation for host populations in the wild. This study applied DNA metabarcoding on parasite larvae cultured from faecal samples to characterize mixed strongyle infections of 320 feral horses on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2014 to test for the influence of host (age, sex and reproductive/social status) and en

Parasites are increasingly recognized for their profound influences on individual, population and ecosystem health. We provide the first report of gastrointestinal parasites in gray wolves from the central and north coasts of British Columbia, Canada. Across 60 000 km(2), wolf feces were collected from 34 packs in 2005-2008. At a smaller spatial scale (3300 km(2)), 8 packs were sampled in spring and autumn. Parasite eggs, larvae, and cysts were identified using standard flotation techniques and morphology. A subset of samples was analysed by PCR and sequencing to identify tapeworm eggs (n=9) a

The prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes was studied in 143 (80 male and 63 female) domestic pigeons. Faecal samples were collected to determine the gastrointestinal nematodes of domestic pigeons through qualitative and quantitative faecal examinations. A total of 48 (male 33 and 25 female) naturally infected domestic pigeons were divided into G1 (albendzdole) and G2 (fenbendazole) treatment-groups along with one control group (C). The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes was 40.5% (58/143) in domestic pigeons. Likewise, the prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes in males and

Six Schistosoma mansoni isolates obtained from the same endemic area were compared experimentally; three were from patients with the hepatosplenic form and three from patients with the intestinal form of schistosomiasis. The following features were analyzed in mice: body weight, liver and spleen weights, mortality, infectivity, number of S. mansoni eggs/female worm, egg distribution in the viscera, and hemogram. Three groups of mice, used as controls, were infected with the LE strain of S. mansoni which is routinely maintained in the laboratory. The group of isolates from patients with the hep

Gastrointestinal parasite infections are among the major limitations to production in sheep in many parts of the world. It is important to continually assess their levels of infection in order to institute control measures and reduce the impact. This study determined the factors associated with the strongylida egg counts in sheep on selected farms in peri-urban Nairobi, Kenya. This was a cross-sectional study in which farm and animal-level data, including faecal samples, were collected from 1640 sheep from 30 purposively selected farms in Ruai, and Kamulu wards in Kasarani sub-county and Utawa

Taenia solium is a zoonotic parasite causing significant health and economic burdens, with complex transmission dynamics that demand improved control strategies. This study examines how infection and reinfection affect cyst development in pigs and how acquired immunity constrains parasite burden. A total of 116 pigs were purchased from commercial farms in northern Peru and housed under controlled conditions. Of these, 110 pigs were allocated to 18 experimental groups to evaluate the impact of single and repeated infections with varying doses of T. solium eggs and to model the number of live cy
