Heteropagus, or "parasitic," twins are asymmetric conjoined twins in which the tissues of a severely defective twin (parasite) are dependent on the cardiovascular system of the other, largely intact twin (autosite) for survival. The estimated incidence of heteropagus twins is approximately 1 per 1 million live births. Isolated case reports comprise most of published work on this rare congenital anomaly. In the past, review articles have focused narrowly on one particular anatomical subtype of parasitic twin and/or on the anatomicopathology observed. Here, we present the epidemiology, proposed

No visitor arriving at a UK air or seaport is left in any doubt about the British Government's wish to keep these islands free of rabies. But far less publicity is given to warnings about the threat posed to human health by another disease which may be carried by companion animals. John Bonner reports on the campaign to stop the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis from reaching these shores.

We report an interesting case of parasitic fibroid which developed from a morcellation remnant following laparoscopic myomectomy. The patient presented with incidental finding of pelvic mass in 2005. She underwent laparoscopic myomectomy for a myoma extending from the Pouch of Douglas to both sides of broad ligament. She subsequently presented with abdominal pain 3 years later in 2008. She underwent total laparoscopic hysterectomy with removal of broad ligament fibroids. During her hysterectomy, a right lumbar mass attached to the omentum was detected, which was excised laparoscopically. Histo

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a parasitic disease caused by intrahepatic growth of the larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis. The main definitive host in Europe is the fox. The adult worms live in the fox intestine and their oncospheres are disseminated by faeces. Wolves, dogs and cats may also serve as definitive hosts. Small rodents--especially voles in Europe and small lagomorphs in Asia--are the natural intermediate hosts. The tumour-like larva is composed of multiple vesicles which produce protoscoleces, the fertile stage of the E. multilocularis metacestode. Carnivore

BACKGROUND: Among the many different intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs), eyelashes represent an uncommon finding almost invariably associated with a history of penetrating trauma. The authors describe a woman who had no signs and denied any history of trauma with an odd-looking, whitish, worm-like IOFB eventually identified by pathologic analysis as a cilium.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old lady complaining of floaters with mild loss of vision and redness presented to our institution. Slit-lamp examination revealed trace cells, while the fundus showed 1+ vitreous cells and the presence of a 3- to

This article highlights the difficulties posed by initial radiological investigations that misleadingly interpreted a linear opacity in the ascending colon of a 2-year-old to be a complicating calcified Ascaris. Final surgical management revealed an unusual cause for the tram tracking effect so pathognomonic of Ascaris infestation. Of interest are the images of the abdominal x-ray, ultrasound scan, and barium study.

Mimicry is the close resemblance of one living organism (the mimic) to another (the model), leading to misidentification by a third organism (the operator). Similar to other organism groups, certain species of plant-parasitic fungi are known to engage in mimetic relationships, thereby increasing their fitness. In some cases, fungal infection can lead to the formation of flower mimics (pseudo flowers) that attract insect pollinators via visual and/or olfactory cues; these insects then either transmit fungal gametes to accomplish outcrossing (e.g. in some heterothallic rust fungi belonging to th

Blood hypereosinophilia is a common finding in medical practice requiring further investigations. Parasitic diseases are a major cause of eosinophilia and eosinophilia is mainly due to helminths. The investigation of eosinophilia is a long and complicated process. The etiologic diagnosis of eosinophilia requires a review of the patient's history which may reveal travel out of country, symptoms and rate and evolution of eosinophilia. For subjects originating from a country as Tunisia, suspected parasitosis -if eosinophilia is massif- are toxocariasis, distomiasis and scabies. Anguilluliasis and

Diagnosis of major hypereosinophilia (>1500 x 10(9)/L) is complex because the possible causes cover the entire range of medical specialties. History and clinical condition will usually suggest parasitic or allergic diseases or drug reactions. When workups for them are negative, rarer causes must be suspected: specific organ diseases (chronic eosinophilic pneumonia, bullous pemphigoid, etc.), solid tumor, clonal blood disorders, or vasculitis. When the condition is prolonged and unexplained, hypereosinophilic syndrome is diagnosed. A rare disorder, its prognosis depends on largely on its cardia

Complete or near-complete mitochondrial genomes are now available for 11 species or strains of parasitic flatworms belonging to the Trematoda and the Cestoda. The organization of these genomes is not strikingly different from those of other eumetazoans, although one gene (atp8) commonly found in other phyla is absent from flatworms. The gene order in most flatworms has similarities to those seen in higher protostomes such as annelids. However, the gene order has been drastically altered in Schistosoma mansoni, which obscures this possible relationship. Among the sequenced taxa, base compositio

Parasitic diseases which during their course in the host switch the immune system from a T helper 1 to a T helper 2 response may be detrimental to the host, contributing to granuloma formation, eosinophilia, hyper-IgE, and increased susceptibility to bacterial and fungal infections. Patients and animals with acute schistosomiasis and hyper-IgE in their serum develop pyogenic liver abscess in the presence of bacteremia caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The Salmonella-S. mansoni association has also been well documented. The association of tropical pyomyositis (pyogenic muscle abscess) and pyogen

BACKGROUND: A variant of conjoined twins is one in which one twin is incomplete.
CASE: A female infant was born vaginally at 40 weeks' gestation to a healthy primipara. No important abnormalities were noted during prenatal examinations. The infant was fully developed in all external aspects except for a parasitic body conjoined with her sacrococcygeal region. Separated by operation 2 weeks after birth, the parasite contained lower limbs, adipose tissue, muscles, and a bowel sac. Over 4 years of observation, no abnormalities have been found since the operation.
CONCLUSION: Obstetricians shoul

This article updates recent advances in the body of knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of intestinal parasites. The articles focus on the manifestations of disease in the immunocompetent adult host from developed countries. Specific pathogens discussed are Giardia lamblia and Dientamoeba fragilis, Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dipar, Blastocystis hominis, Cyclospora cayetanensis, and Cryptosporidium parvum.

Between February 18, 1995, and July 1, 1996, 38 cysts derived from New Zealand cattle were subjected to a diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) designed to identify genomic Taenia saginata DNA. No Tsaginata DNA was identified but an amplification product of 1078 bp was obtained consistently from several of the cysts. In Switzerland, suspect Tsaginata cysts are commonly positive for Tsaginata by PCR, but recently three cysts have also given a PCR fragment of 1078 bp, originating from a putatively unknown Taenia species.
