Salivary duct carcinoma with rhabdoid features (SDC-RF) is a rare form of salivary gland neoplasm that was recently described. We report a case of SDC-RF of the parotid gland with loss of E-cadherin and decreased β-catenin expression in a 73-year-old male who presented with right facial/neck swelling and intermittent pain. Morphologically, the tumor presented with a discohesive infiltrate of isolated and cords of pleomorphic round cells containing moderate amount of eosinophilic to fine-vacuolated cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei infiltrating through fibroadipose tissue and salivary parench

We have studied malign tumours of major and minor salivary glands, analyzing the possible etiologic factors in relation to their glandular histological structure (specially in parotid). Classifications have been reviewed, personal in 1971, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in 1974 and the current one proposed by International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2004. Finally, we analyzed new typified tumours also the tumours with variable biological and clinical behaviour.

In Japan, the incidence of double cancers is increasing due to the rise in cancer prevalence in the super-aging society, and the frequency is particularly high among patients with head and neck cancer. To the best of our knowledge, there has been only 1 reported case of metachronous double cancer with parotid gland cancer and tongue squamous cell carcinoma, and herein we report the outline of this case. The patient was a 70-year-old male with a smoking history. In 2017, a total parotidectomy and neck dissection for adenocarcinoma of the right parotid gland were performed at the otolaryngology

Ectopic thymic carcinoma (ETC) of the parotid gland is a rare entity. This report describes the case of a 52-year-old man with a painless mass in the right parotid gland. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a biphasic mass consisting of a central segment and a peripheral segment. The patient underwent a superficial parotidectomy, and point-to-point correspondence sampling for analysis based on MRI findings was performed. The pathological finding was ETC, and there was an excellent association between MRI characteristics and histopathological findings. Subsequently, the patient underwent po

We report a case of a 59-year-old man who presented with a preauricular facial lump that was suspected to be a parotid malignancy based on fine needle aspiration. A chest radiograph and a computed tomogram showed a mass in the lungs and several metastases, and caused a diagnostic dilemma as to the origin of the parotid mass, which was later confirmed to be metastatic disease that had arisen from a carcinoma of unknown origin. Infraclavicular metastasis to the parotid is rare but should not be overlooked particularly in patients who present with coexisting conditions, or when cytological findin

INTRODUCTION: First bite syndrome (FBS) is a rare but potentially debilitating complication observed after surgery involving the upper cervical region. Patients classically complain of severe facial pain in the ipsilateral parotid region with the first few bites of a meal.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to shed light on the incidence and potential risk factors of FBS, including a series of cases depicting FBS observed after parotidectomy.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 419 patients who underwent parotidectomy at a single tertiary care facility between December 2016 and June 2020.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (FNM) in preventing immediate and permanent postoperative facial nerve weakness in patients undergoing primary parotidectomy.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed-NCBI database from 1970 to 2014.
REVIEW METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature was conducted. Acceptable studies included controlled series that evaluated facial nerve function following primary parotidectomy with or without FNM (intraoperative nerve monitor vs control). Primary and secondary end points were defined as immediate postopera

We report two unusual cases of non-syndromic hypoplasia of the parotid gland. The hypoplastic parotid gland mimicked a preauricular parotid tumor in one case and presented as an incidental image finding in the other case. Absence of the deep lobe and isthmus of the parotid parenchyma could be determined on axial computed tomography (CT) by revealing fat tissue composition of the parotid space. The underdeveloped superficial lobe of the gland was observed on three-dimensional CT sialography.

Unilateral parotid enlargements in children are very rare compared with their incidence in adulthood. Besides epidemic parotitis, juvenile hemangioma, a highly differentiated type of capillary hemangioma, is the most common reason for parotid enlargement in childhood. Parotid enlargement or changes in the adjacent tissue structures may also represent symptoms of systemic diseases. A very rare manifestation of a rubeola (measles) infection in its preexanthematic state in the parotid region is demonstrated in the following case presentation. The subsequent discussion will focus on a variety of d

The authors previously have reported a technique for visualizing the parotid gland with high resolution ultrasonography. The fine morphology of the parotid gland as well as normal anatomical landmarks were well visualized with ultrasonography. This study has continued for the past two years, and an additional twenty patients with suspected parotid pathology are presented. Ultrasound was helpful in (1) making a specific diagnosis in sialectasis, (2) determining whether parotid swelling was secondary to enlargement of adjacent tissues or indeed secondary to an intraparotid mass, (3) demonstratin

Surgeons who operate successfully upon patients with non-neoplastic or neoplastic disease of the parotid gland must have special graduate training in this type of surgery. The anatomical nature of the gland, the facial nerve, and surrounding anatomical structures combined with disease all tend to enhance surgical difficulties inherently present. The well trained surgeon is usually successful in avoiding many surgical difficulties. Wound exposure and identification of the facial nerve are discussed at length. Patients undergoing multiple operations fall into a special category since the surgeon

AIMS: Most salivary gland neoplasms are distinguished by specific recurrent gene fusions. Recently, a subset of pleomorphic adenomas (PAs) originated from the parotid gland harboring the HMGA2:WIF1 fusion was described with a canalicular adenoma-like morphology and a greater propensity for recurrence and carcinomatous transformation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This study delineates the clinicopathological attributes of 54 cases of PAs exhibiting HMGA2 alterations, predominantly characterized by the HMGA2:WIF1 fusion, alongside a comparative analysis of their morphological and immunohistochemical pr

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms both benign and malignant are the most common indications for parotidectomy. About 70%-80% of all salivary gland tumours are located in the parotid gland with up to 80% being benign. Parotidectomy is a common surgical procedure performed by the otorhinolaryngologist and oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
AIMS: This study aimed to document our experience on parotid gland surgeries, and occurrence of facial nerve palsy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of all patients that had parotidectomy between January 2014 and December 2018 were evaluated. Demographic, clinical and o

Metastatic tumors involving salivary glands arising from the non-head and neck area are very rare. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is known for its high propensity for metastasis to unusual localizations. RCC metastasis to the maxillofacial area is an uncommon event (16%), but metastasis to salivary glands is extremely rare. We report a series of 9 such cases retrieved from two institutions. The group included 6 females and 3 males. The age at diagnosis ranged from 60 to 97 years (mean 72.6 years). The tumors involved the parotid gland in 7 cases, and the submandibular and small salivary gland of t

Metastatic involvement of the oral and maxillofacial region is an uncommon clinical event. These secondary lesions may develop in several anatomical locations, most frequently within the parotid glands or orbital structures. While many primary tumors that spread to these regions arise from neighboring sites such as the scalp, face, oral cavity, or pharynx, distant subclavicular malignancies can also give rise to metastases in these areas. Among such tumors, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the third most frequent source of metastasis to the oral and maxillofacial region. Nevertheless, reports of

The aim of this study was to display the cancer-specific and overall survival of patients with primary and metastatic malignancies of the parotid gland. In this retrospective study all patients with primary parotid malignancy and metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) of the parotid gland treated surgically with curative intent at a tertiary care institution were included. Patients were followed with regards to their oncologic outcome for a minimum of two years. Management approaches, overall, and cancer-specific survival were compared between patients with primary and secondary p
