Etiological and Pathological Investigation of Bacterial Pneumonia in Forest Musk Deer (Moschus berezovskii) Using a Novel Multiplex PCR Assay.

Pneumonia is a major cause of mortality in forest musk deer (M. berezovskii) breeding, leading to significant economic losses. Conventional pathogen detection methods, such as bacterial isolation and culture, are time-consuming and costly. This study aimed to develop a rapid, specific, and sensitive multiplex PCR assay for the simultaneous detection of four common bacterial pathogens. Specific primers were designed to target genes: gyrB for Escherichia coli, PhoE for Klebsiella pneumoniae, LasI for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Kmt1 for Pasteurella multocida. The multiplex PCR system was optimiz…

The standardization and efficacy of fermented Crescentia cujete (L.) in combination with enrofloxacin against artificially induced pneumonic pasteurellosis in rat models.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is an opportunistic bacterium that causes pneumonic pasteurellosis (PP). The common treatment against PP is using antibiotics in conjunction with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This combination presents various complications, i.e., immune-depression. Hence, the alternative therapy to replace the effects of NSAIDs needs to be clarified. One of them is using fermented calabash [Crescentia cujete (L.)] (FCC). AIM: This study aimed to elucidate the efficacy of FCC in combination with enrofloxacin against artificially induced PP in rat models. MET…

An outbreak of fowl cholera in ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus).

A total of 120 ring-necked pheasants from a 3000-bird flock in Zeeland, MI, died over a 3-day period. Clinical signs included sudden death, diarrhea, and limping. At necropsy, hepatomegaly with multifocal cream-colored foci randomly distributed throughout the parenchyma was observed in diseased birds. Additionally, the spleen was enlarged up to three times its normal size and had a marbled appearance. Microscopically, there was multifocal splenic and hepatic necrosis with intralesional rod-shaped bacteria. Pasteurlla multocida serotype 3/4 was isolated from liver and spleen. In this paper, we

Arthroscopic treatment of septic arthritis in a patient with posterior stabilized total knee arthroplasty.

We report on a case of arthroscopic treatment of septic arthritis of the knee in a 73-year-old woman with a posterior stabilized knee endoprosthesis. Six months after arthroplasty of the right knee joint because of osteoarthritis, the patient experienced an erysipelas of the right lower leg after a cat bite. Although given intravenous antibiotic therapy, the patient developed septic arthritis of the right knee. Pasteurella multocida could be identified as the causative organism. The joint infection was classified as stage I according to Gächter. Via arthroscopic joint debridement, partial syno…

The evolution of vaccines for bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis.

Since the early 1900s bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis has been recognised as a major economic problem to European and North American cattle industries. Initial attempts to prevent the disease were complicated by incomplete knowledge of the causative organisms. Despite some early reports of vaccine-induced protection against disease, initial vaccines were of questionable protective value. From the late 1950s to the 1970s Pasteurella haemolytica and P multocida bacterins were the primary type of vaccine used commercially and experimentally. When viruses, most notably bovine herpesvirus 1 (infect

Management of cat and dog bites.

An estimated 1 to 2 million Americans are bitten by cats and dogs each year. Most victims are children who are bitten by dogs. Dog and cat bite wounds may appear trivial, but if they are not managed appropriately, they can become infected and may result in functional impairment. Cat bite wounds on the hand have the greatest risk of infection. Pasteurella multocida, isolated in over half of all cat bite wounds and in 20 to 30 percent of dog bite wounds, can cause serious infection with severe complications. Amoxicillin-clavulanate is recommended for the outpatient treatment of dog and cat bite …

Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Antimicrobial Resistance Profile of Respiratory Pathogens Isolated From Suckling Beef Calves to Reprocessing at the Feedlot: A Longitudinal Study.

Here, we investigated the prevalence and risk factors for the presence of Histophilus somni, Mannheimia haemolytica, Mycoplasma bovis, and Pasteurella multocida in the respiratory tract of calves from the spring processing to the reprocessing at feedlots. Additionally, we characterized, phenotypically and genotypically, the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profile of the four species. Calves from 22 cow-calf operations were enrolled in the study (n = 30 calves per operation) and sampled by deep nasopharyngeal swabs at three time points: spring processing, weaning, or induction into feedlots, and…

Multipathogenic necrotising supraglottitis in an immunocompetent patient.

Supraglottitis is a potentially life-threatening condition. It is now uncommon due to the Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccination and is more recently caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, H. influenzae non-type B, H. parainfluenzae, Staphylococcus aureus and Pasteurella multocida Very rarely, it can cause necrotising supraglottitis/epiglottitis, and this has been reported in immunocompromised individuals. We present a unique case of multipathogenic supraglottitis causing laryngeal fibrinoid necrosis in an immunocompetent patient. During his admission, the patient was critically u…

A review of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, shipping fever pneumonia and viral-bacterial synergism in respiratory disease of cattle.

Unanswered questions on the etiology and prevention of shipping fever pneumonia have allowed this disease to remain one of the most costly to the North American cattle industry. Research in this area has indirected that while Pasteurella haemolytica and, to a lesser extent, P. multocida are involved in most cases, they seem to require additional factors to help initiate the disease process. Bovine herpes virus 1 has been shown experimentally to be one such factor. This review examines in some detail the topics of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, shipping fever, and viral-bacterial interactio

Facial bite wounds: management update.

Bite wounds are frequently located on the face; injuries inflicted by dogs are most common, especially in children. Bacteriology of infected dog and cat bite wounds includes Pasteurella multocida, Staphylococcus aureus, viridans streptococci, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, and oral anaerobes. Infected human bites yield a similar spectrum of bacteria except for Pasteurellae and C. canimorsus; instead human bites are frequently complicated by Eikenella corrodens. Antibiotic therapy against these bacteria is indicated both for infected bite wounds and fresh wounds considered at risk for infection. Am…

PASTEURELLA SEPTICA INFECTIONS IN HUMANS.

Five instances of infection by Pasteurella septica, an organism which closely resembles H. influenzae on methods of presumptive bacteriology, are reported from an acute treatment general hospital practice over a period of three months. This infection decidedly outnumbers those caused by other Pasteurella species in North America. The organism is apt to be identified as H. influenzae, Friedlander's bacillus or Mima polymorpha. Unlike these, it shows extreme sensitivity to penicillin, sometimes combined with resistance to antibiotics that inhibit or kill these other organisms. While in the past P
